A bloke at work got his ute painted a few weeks ago, and the spray painter told him to leave it in his shed, and to not touch it for a fortnight to give the paint the a real decent amount of time to harden. Apparently it takes at least a week for all the thinners to come out of the paint. But no one is that patient to wait a fortnight, before re-assembly, haha.

Well, I would have loved to have left it, but I'm in Italy right now for work. I'll put the engine in the frame as soon as I get back to Melbourne :)

Well, after 2 weeks of work in Italy, flew out on Thursday and landed in Melbourne today (Sat) at 3am. Was home by 4am and got to bed by 5am. Sold the R1 and then fitted the engine to the Gixxer. Not a bad day considering I just got back :D

Bikes coming together nicely....

Does the new owner of the R1 come here?

wackyrider
12-02-2013, 05:18 PM
The guy contacted me through bikesales, never been on here as far as I know. But he likes the bike as is and is not gonna change anything. He promised to take care of her for me, and he's better as it's gonna be tough to see her go after about 3.5yrs

Well, decided to have a look at the forks while they were out to make sure they were all good. Better safe than sorry I say

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/IMG-20130215-00763_zps3a72f791.jpg

Then headed back home to get some more work done. This is where I currently am

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/Melbourne-20130215-00764_zps2db19802.jpg

However in the meanwhile I have not been able to start the bike as I am getting an error on the speedo. I have started another thread regarding the error message here=> http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/showthread.php?26034-GSXR-K4-problem-CHEC-on-display&p=385250#post385250

no idea on the error. but just checking you got the ''breakoutbox with the dash"?

Quick run over a wiring diagram got me this. pretty sure i have most of the breakoutbox done too (still pay to test with a multimeter as we go along as I'm bloody tired)

No, the dial indicator wasn't reset actually. I had a reading of 10 thou runout which I assumed would be normal since it's not a spinning object.

Yeah I got the breakout box as well as a multimeter. It's doing neat wiring which is an issue. i also want to try to get a plug which is like the stock so I can wire that up rather than butcher the loom

Ok, looking for ideas on how to mount my headlight unit. I'd like to keep the forks as clean as can be as well as hide any wiring there may be. On the R1 I had used the bottom mount and used some 3mm Aluminium plate for the bottom and sides, then bolted a tab to the top mount to stop vibration.

On the Gixxer there is the damper at the bottom and the headlight is quite a different shape so not sure if I can use the same method. I'd appreciate any ideas as well as pics of what you have done to mount any small h/lights or masks.

Here's a pic of the bike

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/602483_401022226622237_84086255_n.jpg

Bob
21-02-2013, 10:22 AM
Zip ties!! Lol

Redmohawk
21-02-2013, 11:43 AM
Got any mounting lugs Facing forward off the headstem/frame ? A bracket off that to the centre rear of light , maybe with a pivot. Then a pushrod off one of the triples to allow the light to swing with the forks. Giving you the closeness of light to forks without the clearance issues of just mounting light hard off frame.

Advantage would be you could mess with the leverage and get the light to swing more or less than the steering input keeping the light better on the road on tighter bends. And I've not seen it done on a fighter yet.

Sounds like more effect than it would be worth

21-02-2013, 12:39 PM
I love this forum, we went from zip ties to a super fly pivoting system to help you see around corners better in one post.
Awesome.

Gix11
21-02-2013, 01:37 PM
Rad idea though. I would always be a bit sceptical though. If the "Super fly pivoting system" decided to fail and lock up, you've suddenly got no steering, and that would suck, large time.

wackyrider
21-02-2013, 03:14 PM
Zip ties... maybe not

Revolutionaly cantilever system... possibly not

So what else? lol

Redmohawk
21-02-2013, 04:10 PM
Large black Rubber bands ala Honda xr , wrap around fork tube and fix to the rear of headlight unit. Simple easy to remove look "smart" if you use the right ones.

wackyrider
21-02-2013, 04:25 PM
Most of the fork mounts are ugly as feck, hence why I don't like them. Might end up buying 4 billet fork mounts and making a bracket off them. Then I might mount the speedo off the headlight itself

wackyrider
22-02-2013, 11:25 PM
Well, the bike was all together (so to speak) albeit not finished but I was dieing to see how she felt. Took her for a spin in the driveway, then a mate want to try her out as well

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/Melbourne-20130220-00777_zps233944f9.jpg

Since then I've started stripping her down again. The original measurements for the adjustable subframe were guesstimates since I couldn't measure exactly. I'm pretty happy with the seat height as is, but I decided that I'd remove 3.5mm so that I can lower it slightly if needed. Still have adjustment to raise it if I want.

So chucked in the mill at work

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/Melbourne-20130222-00779_zps986ead10.jpg

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/Melbourne-20130222-00781_zps1e429665.jpg

After that I deburred the edges and gave her a blast ready for Powder coat

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/Melbourne-20130222-00782_zpsc243b69d.jpg

I've also removed the wheels as I decided not to leave them black after all. Here I am half way there

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/Melbourne-20130222-00783_zpsc36b5296.jpg

Are you using clip ons or bar and risers?
If you are using risers there is the possibility of mounting the headlight bracket from the underside of the top clamp.

Big thanks to Tim today for coming over and tackling the wiring loom for me. We're not done, but done a fair bit to it. Spliced the detachable loom open and extended some parts as well as re-routed most of it to be hidden. then started trying to figure out what most of the wires are for and wire them into the breakout box for the Motogadget dash. I'll let the pics do the talking

Loving the work mate. Looking grouse. I have a K2 1000 that will be converted from plastic fantastic to something more to my liking. I'm buying up parts for that i will be starting soon. So far I have braided lines, a K6 rear that will need a custom subframe made up and a fatbar conversion kit from the uk to go on along with a pair of Leo Vince GP pipes to go on as well.

Keep up the good work.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/IMG-20130313-00032_zpsf9b74d4c.jpg

Righto, I didn't like how you fit on the tank, so off you go

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/IMG-20130313-00033_zps61eb207b.jpg

Time to start looking at mounting this headlight. Been thinking of a few ideas as i don't like the idea of using fork mounts. I like a clean look on the bike. Someone suggested to use the riser bolts so that's just what I did. Got some steel flatbar and started marking out and bending

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/IMG-20130314-00046_zps631d19b3.jpg

bolts weren't tightened up in this photo, parts are a mirror image of eachother

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Gixxer/IMG-20130314-00047_zps141b5a68.jpg

After a few more bends and time this is what I came up with. Going to tack the beds to restore some strength in them as the 90 deg bends are a bit harsh

I am not a fan of the colour scheme Jules. Have you tried switching the colours so it is white on red?

Not being a nay sayer just offering another opinion.

But then I may be biased as I am sick of my colour scheme. Actually hate it. I am going back to black eventually.

Need to get the spacers machined up for the front discs so that I can mount them. I have also installed the braided lines which look awesome (Cheers Mono) as well as new brakes and got my M-lock from Motogadget. Big thanks to Tim for all his patience. Bike can now start keyless. Fuck yeah!!!. I'll upload a video some time this week

2007 Xmas party at Bikecraft. i still remember it well bud. Got to meet a few of the boys right off the bat. I still miss that van, lived in it for a year and loved it. But yeah, things have definitly changed and for the better when it comes to bikes. Remember my first bike here, that old GPZ 600. We should actually try to get back into doing the calendars again as they were great.

MMMM nice taller option in the carbon wrapped bars

I went with the flatter drag style (Actually sno mobile bars) FLY carbon wrapped bars>
http://www.flyracing.com/product/snow/hard-parts/handlebars/aero-tapered-carbon-fiber-handlebars/730/sno-x-mountain-bend

The driven bars would be a nice option though if I dont like the fly bars
