View Full Version : VFighteR's build update....

So, heres the latest on my VFR build..
Ive gone out and secured a complete ass end from a VTR1000 Firestorm (mind you, before I saw VTRFighter's post) and have been plotting and planning the installation for this weekend. I wanted something (as mentioned in an earlier post) to keep the pillion seat and to install without much modification, so sticking to the same brand in this instance has paid off.
The Subframe is such a close fit to the mounting points it aint funny - I would even say within 10mm, so fitting shouldn't be a problem. Need to fabricate a mounting plate for the existing Stayintune (for the time being), but that will be turfed (by turfed i mean sold lol) as soon as I can get a price on a hidden exhaust system
The angle of the VTR subframe seems to be quite high when mounting to the VFR (by eye of course) but that will seen when I actually mount it. If the angles still a little low, as VTRFighter did, some grinding and welding will be in order - I'll post some progress pix next week in any case.
My Yammi FZ16 Headlight unit should be in my hot little hands by the end of next week hopefully and will make a dramatic change to the twins I have on there at the moment. Along with the new ass end, the ol viffer will have a much more aggressive look about it and not that ol lamo image they portray.
New braided brake & clutch lines fitted and can stop on a 2 cent piece now - great for endo's lol
Have also re geared and gone a tooth down on the front (oem 16) and two up on the back (oem43), great wheelies and fast take offs, but a little buzzy on the freeway as I found out on the weekend.
Still tossing up on paint, thinking now a matt metallic dark orange with matt black engine and frame or stick to the original plan of Gloss Black for the tuppawware, silver frame and gold other bitz choices choices choices...
No major dramas thus far during this build, I think its cos I tend to procrastinate and think for too long before I actually do the work
Stay tuned for pix next week
=)
Sounds good.. *waits for pics* ;)

So - I've successfully mounted the VTR1000 subbie and managed to get everything to fit except the for the seat which needs a little mods b4 it sits properly. Im happy with the angle that I chose as the subframe was extened 60mm to bring it up to fit the viffer mounting points - also strengthened the upper subframe with steel rods in the inner tubing...
Had to also widen the top by 40mm to suit the upper mounting points, but nothing that a car jack couldnt fix lol (the things you do when necessary)
Once I have all that sorted, off to powdercoating and refit.
Thanks 80'sFreak for the seat cowl - Hope to get that soon, then source out some rear sets and a shorty muffler to replace the stayintune as it now sticks out like dogs balls.
A coat of paint (which looks the same but aint, so much for supplying the color codes!!) was put on as a temp measure, but will be doing the whole lot in a couple of weeks - Have decided on Gloss black.
More pix to come

Seat has been modified with extra plastic to extend and hide upper sub frame and re covered in grip vinyl
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1268709983.jpg
New Billet fuel cap
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1268703218.jpg

my next step is the exhaust system, so tossing up an underseat unit or underbelly unit as I have room for both. Any ideas?

tru - the reason i did it that way is because the overhang the bar my about 20mm due to the master cylinders, so with the alloy bit on the other end, it sorta firms it up if yo know what i mean.. I had to also extend the bar ends rubber and bolt on the inside
Chasing new bars, so when I get em, will swap the grips around - I dont think it looks to bad in any case

Yeah, I have been told that a CBR 626/929 (I think it was Hyofighter told me) are a direct bolt on, but again, just thinking about it. Im not that much of a hard rider, so the current set up at the mome is ok without spending the rest of my bank balance - mite put a heavier oil and see how that works - get them polished and see what happens...Whats the set up on yours?

VFighteR, mine are a bit of a mix - 2004 R1 fork lowers, wheel, brakes, guard, fitted into 2005 ZX-10R uppers (the R1 uppers were bent). These in turn go into a CBR929 lower triple and an SP1 top triple. I also have a CBR929 'gullwing' top triple, so I can raise the triples on the forks if need be to get the geometry I want.
You need to use spacers on axle and brakes to fit R1 or ZX-10R forks as the Honda fork centre-to-centre measurement is 214mm, vs the 210mm of the others. Easy to make or have made.
Just a few days ago a complete 2006 R1 front end was on ebay, $900 buy it now - it didn't sell.

now that I know how to remove the anodising of alloy parts, will hop to it this weekend (yay Mr Muscle).
Gonna stick with the original forks for the time being until I can get more moolah together. Gonna have a go at changing the fork oil first, see how that goes, then perhaps replace the springs...will do some research over the next week or so.
What I do want to do is re-jet the carbies - anyone know who can do this for me? Bikecraft maybe?? I dont think I have the confidence to go it alone....

Rod...The grips I originally ordered were actually too long! The fella sent me a new set and I used a spacer with the end bars. There is still around 7mm overhang, but the spacers did the trick and the rubber on the new grips is thicker, so its firmer where the grip ends - Used half a bar of soap to get them on! They'll have to be cut off!! lol
NoZ...They're actually Rizoma copies, still good quality though ( I wanted the rizzy ones too, but cost too much)

Well its been a while since I've really done anything to my viffer, but I got stuck into the headlight the other day and this was the result.
Initially, when I installed it, It looked quote odd from the twins that I had on and it took a little getting used to. Although, there was something NQR with it and I couldn't put my finger on it. Deciding to change the headlight was my only other option until....
I was going to remove the entire lug mounts form the frame, but was a little reluctant as remembering that Jules's mounts were hollow behind and I didnt want to risk fucking up the frame, so I drilled one small hole as a test, that was ok, so I then marked where I was going to drill out the rest of the lugs and took out a piece 40x25mm, leaving enough room in between to fit the rear of the headlight bulb on the frame where the original fairing mounts were, thus, pushing back and lowering the unit about 100mm and set back another 50mm. This made a shit load of difference with the aesthetics of the front end. Also made some brace straps tho hold the unit to the forks which have worked out well and saved me $50 for a set!
Here are the before and after shots...

I'd like to add some sort of fly screen to it so it will cover the Acewell unit, so maybe some tinted perspex and design it myself, although, I'd take some ideas from you guys and gals =]

Yeah I hate putting new grips on. Next time instead of using soap, try hairspray, works a treat.
Have you bought that car wheel from Rob yet?
next time use an air nozzle and just hold it between the grip and the bars they go straight on every time

I've got a lead on an '84 (I think) Katana 1100. Marone(spell check) and silver. 2 owners. about 40,000k's. Was a few months ago but I think he wanted around $4000. Got a dent in the tank where it fell over in the shed and 4into1 exhaust. Will get details soon if ya keen Anton...

Looking good mate. This will be fun. Got your sms the other day. Still away. In Jordan at the moment. I'll be back next Monday, so let me know if u need a hand with the bike. Who u using for powdercoating? I used Coburg powdercoating and they were good. And a decent price.
