ok, think i have this subframe licked now

all i gotta do is take it to work tomorrow and drill some holes in it
add a few nutserts, machine up the spacers for the bitubo and its remote res

then paint the sub and tail in a tasteful shade of satin black tomorrow night and all shall be peachy :)

fimpBIKES
26-03-2007, 12:33 AM
oh and about it being loud chop
i was gonna book in to an exhaust place for wednesday morning to get mid-pipes done so i can run the supertrapps

but i have some little slip-in baffles bought for the katana can to quiten it down for rego
i have a feeling that if i just pop em into the end of the yoshi headers on the tiller...... :D

Fimp. Did you ever go ahead with that Angry Guy front guard?

fimpBIKES
29-03-2007, 05:57 AM
ok then,
less than 24hours to go now

here is the rear end, all the indicators, taillight, numberplate, rectifier, battery and ECU are locked in at this point
if i want to get to any of them (except the rec) its going to require pulling it all apart

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/282862694117556.jpg

so i am about to wire up the taillight and indicators
hit a snag last night when i realised i was going to have to extend the rectifier wires
took my time and made sure i soldered em all up nice and tidy, added 200mm in the end

let me tell you this
that subframe is SOLID!!!! i was worried that the rod-ends might let it flex a bit side-2-side
but that thing is planted! :D

also there is ZERO room around the top of the battery
and i realised that there was a possibility there of the +ve bit contacting the subframe rail
so i superglued some silicon (blue stuff in pic) so hopefully that will make things dandy

um yeah, so should get my bodywork this morning
and depending on how tricky its going to be to mount i might throw the bellypan on
probably not swapping the fender until i get back, i am happy that the carbon one on there now cannot touch the rad

so yeah, there ya go
8 hours from now it will be getting the exhaust done so i have until then to get it running peachy and paint the tail in undercoat

or maybe i will just leave it white til i get back, see how much time i have spare i guess

fimpBIKES
29-03-2007, 06:00 AM

Yikes, that subframe is tight! I can't believe you got a TL battery in there.. so my question, what kinda battery did you put in there?

Can't wait to see those supertrapps on there again! (and I'm curious how much power they will absorp..)

fimpBIKES
29-03-2007, 12:54 PM
its an R1 battery, bit smaller than the tiller one!

um, don think i will be making it down to the exhaust place in an hours time
so i think i will just get him to do me some 45degree bends up to slip over the yoshi headers and hope it all falls into place later on....

reason i am soooo behind where i had planned to be today has mainly been due to the fuel pump gasket
must have put it on and off about 4 times, finally used a goo that seems to be keeping the fuel in
nightmarish stuff cos i know a new gasket would be a week away if i ordered one

oh and the subframe is having some troubles too, cant bolt the rear of the tank on at the moment
need to put new bolt holes in it, hopefully we can weld it without taking all that wiring out!!

so yeah, im thinking its gonna be a late one :D

fimpBIKES

You could see yourself in Fimp's back tyre. He's off his head.

ok, so i ran into a few teething problems on the AFR

the main ones being
1) it has a leak from the front rocker cover gasket
2) has trouble going in a straight line, this problem seems to get worse the slower u get
3) lost power to the gauges (all at once, so probably a fuse... but why?)
4) indicators not working
5) tail-light not working
6) nasty, nasty ossilations when slowing quickly from high speed

minor ones that i would like to sort out are....
a) the shitty paint
b) nasty birds nest of wiring behind the headlight
c) the seat, that foam may as well not be there after an hour in the saddle :(
d) carbon fender has to go, too damn big
e) want to tidy up coolant header tank
f) the veypor needs to move forward so i can see it at tuck
g) prototype rearsets work, but... not enough braking force, rear brake lever isnt touching the correct part of my foot and needs to be longer, shifter sometimes gets jammed and cannot shift up without first jiggling it
h) exhaust isnt symmetrical

so thats about it for now

anyone else that has seen it in the flesh notice any other things that they thought could use improvement

You have changed a lot on your TL. Stock they are out of balance weight wise (front-rear) with your new setup that's the whole way round! Besides that you mounted a fork from a gix which is probably a little of springwise. If you are sure the hardware is working properly (discs straight, bearings ok, headstock ok) then I'd suggest you have a look at the suspension and so on :)

I wouldn't be suprised if the gix springs are too soft. If you brake hard you could be on the end of the fork travel. Combine that with the shorter (?) forks and you have a very steep forkangle!

fimpBIKES
03-04-2007, 10:06 AM
yeah, i am pretty sure that the bent front wheel is to blame
but u may be right
there was already sooo much wieght forwards (i had a good 10kg worth of tools in the ol' tankbag too)

so the transfer under heavy braking is a problem

hmmm, might go see what the weight bias is ;)

chopiesel
03-04-2007, 10:14 AM
i think the fork springs is the reason most guys guy busa forks not gixxer.

Excellent idea! Rumours go that several TLR racers (Yoshi for instance) used a swinger with 1 or 2 inch extra length. That way bias would be shifted forward a lot, which ought to work on a stockish TLR because for instance the cans are heavy and pretty far back. Now that probably isn't gonna work on our TLR fighters but it's food for thought.

glad i didnt try to push the gasket back in (me and a few others were talking in the carpark at dubbo about loosing off the bolts and trying that)

been busy
put the rocker cover back on, torqued the bolts to 14Nm (loving my new torque wrench :D)
have the new wheels and front rotors on
fresh fuel pump gasket in, and torque them up with my torque wrench to 4Nm and put studlock on em

if it leaks this time im gonna go mental!!!

figured out why my indicators, gauges and tail light died on AFR
i had the gauges on the same power as the indicator circuit and i think i overloaded it
so i have just unplugged the gauges for now

i have that little points ATM that if i get done at any speed im fucked so....

then overnight i
charge the battery up

and she came to life tonight, put it all back together (need to pull the subframe apart with the current setup to get to the battery terminals)

burnt off down the street to dinner
its pissed down while i was eating

went out there at the end of it all and she fired up
considering all the wiring behind the headlight is exposed im pretty pleased that it all held up in the water!

riding home i couldnt keep it in a straight bloody line :D
i dont know if its cos of all the oil soaked into the rear tyre, but its squirmish in the wet!

the new wheels and rotors completely change the way it handles
i think of moving the bars now and it tips over so im pretty stoked at that [:x]

anyways, its gonna stay like this for a few weeks while i rack some k's up and make sure the electrics are solid without the gauges in there

ok ok ok

i have been tinkering a bit lately
had to take the rear end apart
so i make the wiring slot in the front of the "lunch box" a bit taller

what that means is that now the rear pivot for the tank can now be dropped down to where it was meant to be
i had to pack it up on 15mm spacers for the fools run so that the pivot wasnt pressing on the wiring going to all the gear in the rear end (ECU, battery etc)

that also had the tail-piece floating higher at then it was meant to, leaving more of the lunchbox exposed than i planned

so its all dropped where it should be now, tank is at the right level on the little rubber stops on the chassis rails too. so i dont expect to have that fuel pump gasket giving me trouble anymore

fimpBIKES
17-07-2007, 08:01 PM
also, motomaster have started making rear flame-rotors for late model suzuki's
that match the fronts i have

i looked at buying it from the US, but it actually turned out cheaper (at RRP too!!)
to buy through the aussie importer [:o]

so it should turn up any day now, AUD$220

i'm yet to get access to the lathe at work to turn down my bit of ally bar for the pod-filter adaptors
have a few people telling me its not a fantastic idea due to a lack of available pre-filtered air for the throttle bodies

i have enough aluminium to look at making the stack about 100mm high and then put the pod on top
need to do some measuring and see if i could make them that high
but do you think that might make it easier?

either way i am going to redo the fueling to suit, but Mr Exben seemed to think that even with dyno tuning it would be jerky

opinions?

fimpBIKES
17-07-2007, 08:11 PM
while i was at it i also have taken off the veypor (not using it just until i get this other stuff all fully sorted)
when it goes back on it will be tucked up in the little screen area behind the headlight as opposed to sticking up like a sticking uppy thing!

also dropped the headlight a good 40mm, the furthest i can go without having to remake mounts to clamp on the fatter section of the fork legs

but im still not happy, due to the contruction of the headlight unit i cant tuck it up more than it is
so i think it has to go

its a pity cos it make the bike look nice and "stock" from a head-on direction
im pretty sure it has seen me sneak past the oncoming 4 or 5 patrol cars i have encountered in the past few weeks (including 2 on the heavily patrolled "old road")

but i guess this leaves me open for headlight suggestions, anyone think of anything with nice clean lines that'd suit my bike??

i cant believe this...

i found out why the fuse kept popping on tuesnight
took the headlight off and rooted around in there

after a bit i realised something was missing!
the aftermarket triples i have used 2 aluminium cylinders approx 20mm dia, 30mm high
bolted on the top surface of the lower triple clamp as the steering stops

THEY ARE GONE!!! [:O]

so i have been running around with the steering to the right being stopped by the Rad
and the steering on the left being stopped by all the wiring getting smooshed [xx(]

would have happened in the last week i would say, so i guess i caught it early enough

so the electrical problem was cos one of the connections getting crushed was not quite all the way done up
created a "hot joint" so POP goes mr fuse

im heading into work on saturday morning, have to turn up some new stops
not too tricky
but im wishing i new the exact size of the old ones cos now i have to measure it all up to make sure i dont have this happen again (im struggling for every availabel degree of steering angle i can get with that radiator where it is, u-turns arent my friend as witness at the top of mount panarama by everyone!)

while im there im going to do some other odds and ends
machine up the surfaces on the subframe tie-rods to look pretty etc

so yeah, i never undid those steering stops but i guess they were loose when i got the triples (2nd hand)
just a reminder to all to double check stuff and use loctite, now im off to check my brake caliper bolts :D

Was it a two stroke? Cause then you'd be using more oil too [:p]
sorry couldn't help myself

what sort of place you work at fimp - i'm just starting my thesis through my work and they got all the good machines/toys I want to play with - just have to convince them I'm not going to kill myself or blow something up. Not like the guy a few months ago who put a nine ton press through a $3500 die because he didn't check the end stop... woops

just been playing about with my fender and bellypan

currently have a xstatic and a destroyer fender in stock
and the destroyer is DEFINITELY the way to go from the looks of it

i know, i know
its taken me MONTHS to get to a point where i took of my fender
but fuckit, i have been busy riding :D

but yeah, the destroyer fender looks like it'll be a doddle to mount up
need some rubber sorta washers though

also gots me that new-fangled carcass bellypan off stu
and it is looking like it might be a bit trickier

i can see why stu says its for i4's on his website
its kinda wide so i may need to take a strip out of the middle of it
but the biggest trouble is gonna be finding mounting points for it

there doesnt seem to be a whole heap of mounting points down around there...

Hey fimp I went with the ZORN and I have just used sump bolts to hold the home made brackets and drilled and bolt the pan to them

might have to do something that that too,
i guess i was hoping since the TLR had full fairings that there would be something i could use

Generally full fairings dont bolt to anything under there they just bolt to each other and the rest is bolted further up on the sides and the top.
