had a few "hiccups" in the last week or so
the foam that i had bought, didnt dissolve with the acetone when we tried a sample bit
so i have had to remodel the tail to suit the new stuff we can get which is 13mm blue foam
(shall be picking some up this arvo)
other than that i got Anne on the tools last night and we did good!
got all this done
- installed battery box (need a lid though...)
- installed headlight and gauge bracket (Anne cut her first bolts down to size, did a great job of it too!!)
- installed headlight and gauges (standard units for now...)
- Hooked up Tacho cable both end, tried to do speedo but i couldnt find where the drive comes from??!?!
- Replaced the zip ties holding the mufflers on with actual rubber, sleeves and bolts
- Found a right side footpeg in the box of random bits and bolted it on
- Powered it up and IT DIDNT BURN DOWN MY HOUSE (its in the living room btw)
i think where Mr Dex went wrong with the wiring is in the bit where he removed the key barrel, what he did put a red to a black making a short circuit. and i dont think there was a fuse in his harness (some seem to have em and some dont out of the 3 that i now have laying around)
so that = melty melty
all seems to be sorted now, need to get a few things now though. mainly a
- Key barrel
- Airbox
- Battery box lid
- Tail-light (getting one off exBen, nice little LED thing i designed the rear of the tail to suit)
- Handlebars (tossing up whether a set of clips would suit it...)
- New little rubber thingies to seal the mufflers to the headers, old ones are perished
that'll get it up and running respectively (with a cushion taped on as a seat it'll give anne something to practise on too!)
oh, and did i mention she is quite excited about her fancy strawberry scented 2-stroke oil
does anyone know about the speedo dives on these things? i took the cover off the left side of the engine and couldnt see anything to put it into, didnt seem to be anything down near the front wheel either...

Hey fimp - I've lined up a mate (of a mate) to cut out my templates with a cnc router. Woot. Guess I had better get modeling.
You should try burning synthetic oil sometime - my mates KTM blew a cylinder gasket and was dropping oil onto the headers - I thought I was following a chocolate bar the whole way home.

ok then
with Annies P's test coming up early next year i have (kinda) pulled the pin
ive reached the limit of what i was will to spend (time and money-wise) trying to get it going
still isnt running (probably needs a carb rebuild)
so its going to evolve into something different
we have one a GSX250 to take up learner and provisional license duties (will be able to sell it on and not loose money later on anyways so...)
and this RG is looking to get a heart transplant to become a decently powerful small bike for anne to ride and me to occasional take to the track
so im open to opinions as long as the donor is one of the following
- 4 stroke
- single or double cylinder (prefer single cos there is bugger all room)
- lo-tech, so know EFI if i can help it
- 50-60bhp would be nice, looking to get similar power/wieght ratio to my old SV650
and it needs to be SMALL to fit in there
anyone know of anything that'll do the job?

I was just getting into this thread and now your up for bigger and badder things .... What about a WR450 but i dont think the power is up there.... you should go to a bike shop with a measuring stick and have a look see

KTM300s make awesome dirt bikes but nasty motards - reckon that would follow through with a road/track bike.
Be careful and check the service intervals of some of the hypo 500cc dirt bikes unless you want to service it every week (KTM450 has 12 hour service interval and engine rebuild every 90 hours) tho they do make it easy/cheap to service.
I reckon a breathed on drz400, great bottom end torque, 6000km service interval, 55 hp water cooled and apparently it does 160 with more in it with tall-ish dirt gearing (tho like my signature says I can neither confirm nor deny this ) - tho you'll definately need a cush drive system as the gearboxes are a bit fragile (or aren't I get conflicting reports) - the DRZ400SM comes with cush drives and HALF the power of stock drz to make the box last. Mind you there is a turbo drz getting around... Theres a thought
