Far out, I want one, that printer is freakin amazing. Now sure the scanner is cheap but what does a printer like that cost? Does it do metal aswell or just plastic?

I can't see the video but by the gist of the comments I guess you guys are talking rapid prototypes.

Theres a few different types but the two most common are FDM and SLS
FDM Fused Deposit Modelling - comes out brittle and crappy but cheap. You can get one for about 20k
SLS, selective laser sintering is much better tho about 40k last time i checked. A laser heats individual components and binds them together. You can get carbon fused parts that have the same strengh as injected nylon. Even better are ceramic versions... There is a mod in sydney doing turbo protyping work that can print out a model and run it on an engine for testing.
I'd hate to think how much that bastard would cost.

We use a fair bit of it here at my work but I can't convince them to buy our own machine. Tight arses. I'd use it to make my own custom headlight masks and other such groovey shit.

Fuck i hope I haven't completely missed the point of this thread.

    Dam thats sweet as!!!!,

I seen a very home make one some time ago, takes a bit to set up and is not as fast as that shop one. All you need is a good line level laser and a web camear with a good computer. But after a bit of time you could send it off to a CNC shop for the work.

So if your a bit of a techy nerd have a look at the link.

Just saw the vid and Jay Leno has a massive head. Yupp that stuff is cool.

I'm using metal injection molding at work - that shit is amazing. Its like plastic injection molding but the plastic contains metal particles. You design the mold to produce the part about 1/3 to 1/2 bigger. After you've molded the part most of the plastic is dissolved out and they then chuck it in an oven at 1100 deg for 3 days. The part acts like a shrinky dink and solidifies at the correct size. Fucking awesome stuff.
