    Police commence Operation Springbreak

Police in the South Eastern Region will be increasing their patrols as part of the state-wide traffic enforcement operation codenamed Springbreak.

Regional Traffic Coordinator Inspector Ron Barry said that Operation Springbreak begins at 12.01am, Wednesday September 19 and will run to 12.01am Monday October 8, 2007.

“Traditionally roads in the South Eastern Region during the spring school holiday period are busy with local, state and interstate traffic. High volumes of traffic move on the motorway from the border to Brisbane, the Gold Coast Highway and major connecting arterial roads in country areas, such as Canungra, Beaudesert and Jimbooma.

“In the past, the busiest period on roads in the South Eastern Police Region is the commencement of the school holidays with the September school holidays beginning this Friday September 21, 2007.

“Police will be targeting motorists committing life endangering traffic offences, and particular attention will be paid to the fatal four; fatigue, speed, seatbelts and drink driving,” Inspector Barry said.

Police are urging motorists to obey the road rules and arrive at their destination without any incident.

“With the large number of visitors to the South Eastern Police Region, particularly the Gold Coast, police are asking local drivers to be patient and courteous to those visitors, who may appear lost or unsure of their destination.

“Police also urge visitors who are unsure of their whereabouts to pull off the road in a safe spot and check their directions, instead of driving unnecessarily slow in traffic or making abrupt turns whilst searching for their destination.

“Interstate drivers are reminded that road rules differ between states and a driving activity in their home state may well be a traffic offence in Queensland. Road rules are published on the Queensland Transport website or available from Queensland Transport offices.

“All available operational police will be tasked to specific traffic operations during Operation Springbreak and motorists who disobey the law will be caught,” Inspector Barry said.
