Mate, those engines are good for 300,000+. It's a GSX not (R)
Roller bearing bottom-end does wonders for longevity.
Thats why I put the (R) in brackets... Just lumping all GSX motors in the one bundle for the sake of the argument.
I guess having seen friends buy Kats new in the 80's... then seeing how they rode em... I find it hard to believe there is such a thing as a Kat with 120K's on the clock that hasnt been flogged at one point or another...
I thrashed unholy jesus out of a number of those motors, and they just kept coming back for more. The engines are the 350-chev of motorcycles.
Best to check the particular bike, but very good chance that it is still a good engine at those K's, assuming it's correct.
If I had the cash at the moment I'd definitely go for it.

Yeah dont get me wrong... its the one bike I have always wanted to own and never got round to. If I had $3500 spare id snap it up too.
The seller calims it's an '81 with no engine work.
No wire wheels for a start and black engine cases so it might be an 81 frame but the rest isn't.
Black frame as well.
The barrels and head look very much like EFE stuff, the silver fins and the very square end caps on cam ends are a give away.
Only thing he hasnt done is repaint it ?

Milage is a little high but at least it seems honest,
would have been easy to have bullshitted it back 50,000k's.

If I was looking for a standard Kat it would HAVE to be
an '83 SD, with half-alloy pegs, the GSXR style wheels and
the best of the "pre" EF/EFE Black motors. Well, that the
last of the UK Kats, was it the same out here ?

I thnk so Tony. The engine number he quotes is pre-EFE, so most likely the last of the Kat motors, but the efe head and barrels fit the Kat bottom end. The frame number is correct for 81-83
Not all Kats had Wire wheels, in fact most didn't.

Like I said, not sure about OZ Kat spec's, but in
the UK you would never get an 83SD with those older
foot pegs and wheels, would have though genuine 81
as claimed (not sure about barrels / head)

The bike for sale is one of 2 Busa's in OZ running "Ghetto" Turbo kits from "Mr MOTORHEAD" in the USA. Both are Streetbikes. The other one is owned by a local guy I know in Brissy, Shane.
His looks better with its clothes on,
and runs a Genuine 8.886 @ 157.84 at the strip.
Not for sale, but VERY nice.
