Hey Trav, I reckon it was the oil that has saved it. The banjos were loose so it had a good coat of oil everywhere. It's a twat to get off but better than seized and rusted bolt heads.

and better than a whole heap of corrosion on your cases.
Old 2 strokes never rot, they just need a good wash....mine has been pushed aside that many times its not funny. Good luck.

Tidy little thing that Aido. Nice job.
9 years in the making......been put back in moth balls again for the past 12 months whilst house moved and new shed getting built.
Perhaps a little inspiration for you.
2 Strokes are awesome because they are self preserving.
So your going down the VJMC route of nut and bolt? Why not go a little modern with maybe an RGV front end, a set of micron or similar expansion pipes a flat track seat etc etc. Doing them all original is harder than modifying.
Keeping her as original as I can. Just gonna ditch the points for a more reliable unit. For all intents and purposes, it's a stock bike.
what e said ^
good stuff mate looks like i MAY be working on a GT750 engine when it ARRIVES FROM THE STATES SO ILL BE FOLLOWING THIS THREAD FOR SURE
Just the engine Jock. Would look really good in a later fame and running gear and a set of expansion chambers.

wel if the lumps salvagable i was gonna try to wedge it in dannys old 250 gixer roller lol
yeah what do you reckon the chances of getting it regoed are ol
just find a like minded club , and club rego it ! No engineers ticket needed , and $88 bucks a year for 90 days riding .
theres a thought
just a note on club rego, in QLD it needs to be 30 years old to qualify......... i am having trouble with the Bimota at the moment.
25 in Vic ;)
If you put something like a GT750- 2 smoke twiple into a bike that
originaly had a larger engine, would it make rego/inspection/safety certs
much easier as its a down grade ? or is the fact its so different still an issue
Mmmmm...... thinking again......

Sorry for the off topic post.
well the engine will be 30yrs old lo
apparently the guy that put an h2 into a gixer 400 tried the 750 chassis first but the frame downtubes fouled the exhaust ithink dunno bout the GT lump tho ive had alook at the barrels and theres a gap between no1 and no 2 cylinders kinda looks odd oops sory for hijacking the thread ..

A bit more time in the shed. Finally got to a point where the block is clean and safe to start cracking it open.
Got the points cover off and removed said points. Won't be needing them, going a bit more modern and reliable.

After that I whipped off the cover to discover a stuffed nylon gear. NOT what I wanted to find but such is life.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1f59ef05.jpg
Then removed the clutch cover and clutch aasy. Looks pretty good.

You see the smallest gear here?
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...ps196fed9a.jpg
Well there's a tiny pin that acts the same as a woodruff key. Dropped mine and took ages to find.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4206aa89.jpg
Spun the block and set to work on the alt.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...psa8662c03.jpg
After taking the top off I noticed some uneven wear. Is this normal or is there a balance or bearing issue on the crank shaft?
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7adbc993.jpg
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...psd05f3724.jpg
Gonna order all new bearings and seals for a full bottom end rebuild. With a bit of luck gears and selectors will be fine. Any tips from 2smoke officianados while at this stage greatly appreciated.
Check the wear on the inside of the Alt housing , if the wear mark is only in one spot its more likely the housing was out of alignment. If its all around the housing its a bearing. Good news is your slip rings are in good shape measure the size of your brushes and I'll see if I have replacement newbies here , if so I'll post em to you .
Cheers Adam. I'll check tomorrow. The brushes looked pretty good. I'll take pictures.
I'm now a big fan of soda blasting. A mate popped around over the weekend, saw the state of the barrels and offered to blast them for me. Judge for yourselves.

I've lined up the frame, wheels and other bits for the same treatment.
Fuck thats a very nice result from the soda blasting. Project is looking good mate.
Is this bike finished yet?
Been a while between posts on this project but I'm happy to say there's been a breakthrough. Got myself a genuine bargain this week. Picked up a complete GT380 in kit form for a paltry $600 ! Everything is there including the original tool roll. Last registered 1983 with 18,000 on the clock. Proper chuffed with this.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...psf298e39d.jpg
thats rad
Enough bits and pieces arrived this week to allow me to put one engine back together ;). Waiting on big end bearing, ignition timing gear and seals for the other. Better get a frame cleaned, new bearings in and painted so I have a safe place to keep the newly assembled motor.
Pictures to follow.
Pah. There's always a safe place to keep the engine ;)

More progress albeit slow. Stripped down GT #2 as I will be using this frame & engine for the resto. Cleaned the frame and removed 30+ years of gunk! I'll take it for soda blasting & painting later this week.

Pile of bits to be cleaned or replaced.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...ps269b1342.jpg
Engine needs a clean. (The other, already clean one is for the trip fighter. Want matching numbers on the resto).
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...psa101ec9e.jpg
The frame is painted and ready for reassembly of sorts. The shocks were too far gone and TBH I couldn't be fucked trying to restore them so I picked up some of Chinas finest from Fleabay for just over $100 delivered. TUV approved to boot.

My fixing guy in England came through with the goods this morning. Every nut, bolt, washer and split pin in polished SS neatly bagged and labelled. Gotta say, I'm well impressed with the service and the price. $157 delivered !!
