Put the top bar of the subframe back on. Would have left it before but I kind of wanted to check my welds from using a 110 flux instead of a 220 with gas MIG welder. Welds were good. Penetration all the way around, But since I had it apart once again I sleeved it. Was in too much of a hurry the first time. Then took the flapper wheel and cleaned up some of the other welds that I didn't bother to smooth out the first time around either. After that I gave it a 1/16 slice up by the front cross bar and angled the tail up. 1/16 pie cut at the front amounts for quite a bit of lift at the back. Didn't measure it but I can tell a difference. Now to stop off at the metal store and get a pice of rectangle tubing to match the lower bar and get that welded up again.

Got some tubing tonight on the way home from work. got them cut and half way welded in when I ran out of wire. Knew I was getting low, So its my fault. Anyway I got the bottom bars in there and got to sit on it. Love it.

That's a great post mate. Nice work on the RF, looks much better.
-
Thanks
Set the engine back in to find the space available for relocating the thermostat housing inside the frame.
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...025_204727.jpg
And a pic of the stance with the engine in just for kicks.
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...025_205530.jpg
Also while the engine is in again, I will need to find a place the battery will fit and a couple other brackets.

Gagging for a set of same era GSXR USD forks mate. Bolt straight in as well I'd reckon.
....or did you mention already that you had some replacements and I missed it?
-
thats looking good mate well done and yeah as Gix said some USD's would go well with your build for both looks and handling
-
nice work ,i like the enthusiastic approach ,
-
I do have some usd forks waiting. 636 forks though not gixxer. Don't bolt right in but im determine to get them to work. Matching wheel to the rear.
-
Cool. Just forks or complete front end (triple clamps etc)?
-
complete front, but will have to do a bit of modifying for the rf stem to fit in the lower triple. I pressed it out the other night. Plan is to cut the 636 stem into a bushing and turn the inside down to accept the rf stem. Press the 636 bottom part of stem back in. then press in the rf stem. Then figure out what to do with the top triple. Id like to find a z1000 top triple to run dirty bars. or another option is to get a guy at the shop to make a whole new top triple solid and drill holes for risers.
-
Why not drill the 636 top clamp if it fits? A lot of guys here have drilled the original cast top clamps and ridden for years without any issues. As long as you get some good solid drill points you should be fine.
-
Its because they got fancy with the top clamp and did some cut outs on it. So not really any place to drill. :( otherwise I would
-
Found a place to put the battery. Just need to weld in some mounting brackets.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...F/100_8327.jpg
Also welded on the mounts for the passenger pegs.
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...F/100_8325.jpg
Was going to just do some more welding of mounting tabs for the battery tray tonight but since It was snowing I didn't feel like getting the welder out. So just made some templates for cutting out metal when I can. A template for the undertail with the bends I'll need to make on a brake. And also a template for the side just under the tank and front of the seat. Needed something to cover that area.

And a GIMP idea of what the color it may be like. A darkish red with satin finish clear.

Cool. Coming along nicely. What is snow?
-
-
Snow don't know what it is but it looks cold and wet yuck
stay away from that
-
bike is looking great! way better than the standard look!
just my 2c tho.....
why not redo the subframe to take out some of the bulk (in the yellow circle)
you could do one big subframe from further up and do a canterlever brace (like the bit in red)
as i said just my 2c and some food for thought....
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...Untitled-1.png
-
i like the brace where it is kind of suits the build and is a lot more pactical in a out door workshop
-
he did it like that so he could still use pillion pegs kiwi
-
All good points. I originally wanted to do something more hidden as mentioned, but Wasn't sure about strength purposes for a 2 up application with the top bar extending that far over the end of the lower triangulated bar. So I just went back to the stockish style which goes most the way back to the tip of the tail. Its kind of growing on me and the bar is the same angle as the tail plastic. also wasn't sure how i would clean up the corner of the main frame by the pegs. probably would have just rounded it out i guess. Maybe next time. :) Thanks for the suggestions.
-
Once it's painted black as well you won't even notice it. I think it works well. If you followed the red lines you'd have a strange looking 'Y' shaped frame to contend with instead .
-
Ah that's a fair point, I always seem to think of street fighters as a solo rider setup, I forget people still like to ride 2 up
-
Yes, I agree. I love the look of the single seat with nice fiberglass kicked up tail. But the last time I had a single seat bike my wife said, "where am I going to sit?" So I figure that will have to wait until I have a second bike for just me or I can convince her to ride her own bike.
Went to the shop today and played. Made the rear wheel spacers and started the press fit bushing for the stem swap on the 636 triple. Finish could have been better but they will work fine I think.

good stuff mate keep up the good work
-
-
Good on you mate. I am keen to see how this bike turns out when your done. Also very pleased to see others pull down perfectly un-crashed stock bikes. Cracks me up when people suggest my streetfighter was a crashed machine before I started. Love the expression on there face's when I tell them it was a complete running bike when I started.
Keep up the good work mate!
-
Yeah. I cant leave anything stock. And I got the same thing asking if I did that because I wrecked all the plastic. I said, No, its all still at home in a pile under the deck. But I might start cutting it up and see if I can do a bit of a belly pan.
-
Finished up my bushing for the stem swap. Just need to get to the press to put it all back together. Its in the other bay at the shop and was all locked up today.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...117_104558.jpg
THEN, I wasn't patient enough to wait until next week to press my stem in. I went and got out my cheap pipe bender and found a way to use it to press the stem back in. Worked great.
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...117_154253.jpg
On the piece I made I moved the lip in deeper to allow the stem to press farther in. That way it would put the place for the lower bearing right at the top of the triple since this triple is a lot thicker than the original.

I think the old Bates headlight thing is so old now that it may be cool again?
