DUNLOP Sportmax SportSmart
Imagine you've been given the chance to design your own sports tyre. What features would it have? Race-quality grip? Wet-roads predictability? Touring Mileage? How about all three features in one tyre?
That's exactly what Dunlop achieved in its dynamic new SportSmart
- NTEC Race Tyre Technology for faster track day laps
- Multi-tread technology front & rear maximises pure grip between 35 and 55 degrees lean angle
- New advanced silica and resin for greater confidence in the wet
- Best in class mileage as proved by independent tests by DECRA
Ultimate in Motorcycle Tyre Performance, Confidence and Endurance
Race-quality grip in the dry, total confidence in the wet, and wear rates that don't compromise sporting satisfaction. Put it all together and you've got an ultimate hypersports tyre. But for street and occasional track day riders, this ultimate combination of performance and longevity has never quite managed to make the jump from concept to reality, until now.
Enter the new, award winning Dunlop Sportmax SportSmart with race-bred NTEC technology.
By focusing all its road and motorsports experience into the SportSmart project, Dunlop has created a new benchmark of handling and confidence, irrespective of riding conditions – dry racetrack or wet roads.
The SportSmart delivers the highest levels of performance while also capable of putting in the hard touring kilometres. Riders can expect noticeably more mileage from SportSmart than they would achieve with other hypersports tyres.
"We believe that if riders had the technology, experience and resources to design and build their own ideal sports tyre, the Dunlop Sportmax SportSmart is the tyre they would end up creating," said Ken Wieden, Dunlop Motorcycle & Motorsport Manager.
"It's an excellent combination of all the attributes an enthusiast would want in a tyre – strong grip in all conditions, very predictable handling characteristics and sensible wear rates.
"One of the key features that really set the SportSmart apart from the competition though is the introduction of Dunlop's race-bred NTEC pressure-adjust system – available for the first time ever in a street tyre. For street riding the rear tyre operates best with conventional street pressures, however for track day use the rider simply reduces the rear tyre pressure to between 21 – 24 PSI (Race Track) to gain massive grip level improvements.
"We're very proud of our engineers' achievement with SportSmart. Dunlop invented the pneumatic tyre in 1888. In the SportSmart, I think our team might well have reinvented the sports motorcycle tyre."
Adding weight to the tyre's credentials, the SportSmart took out first place overall in the MOTORRAD (Germany) Motorcycle Tyre Test 2010, as well as named the Motorcycle News (UK) 2010 'Product of the Year – Tyre'.
In concluding the SportSmart as the overall winner, MOTORRAD said; "what a balancing act between wet and dry grip, SportSmart masters it best and is thus a deserving winner."
Similarly, when announcing this year's Motorcycle News top honour, editor Marc Potter said; "the Dunlop SportSmart is the clear Product of the Year – Tyre victor in 2010."
During Independent testing performed by DEKRA in January 2010 on a SUZUKI GSX-R 1000 (2009) on 120/70ZR17 and 190/50ZR17, the Dunlop SportSmart also achieved approximately: 20% better mileage than Michelin Power Pure 30% better mileage than Pirelli Diablo Rosso 40% better mileage than Bridgestone Battlax BT-016 Dunlop has achieved the ideal rider's package of strong dry performance, reassuring wet grip and endurance in the SportSmart through the intelligent application of three ground-breaking Dunlop technologies: the race-bred NTEC pressure-adjust system, MultiTread compound design, and the Jointless Belt (JLB) construction.

Road-Going 2011 KTM Superbike
Running Dunlop SportSmart As Original Equipment
Innovative design by Dunlop engineers has revolutionised the hypersports tyre market, and the tyre responsible for the revolution is the SportSmart. So impressive is the new tyre that was launched in Australia in January this year, Superbike manufacturer KTM have specified the SportSmart as original equipment for the road-going version of their 2011 model RC8R.
The RC8R runs a revised twin-cylinder engine, delivering the impressive 175 bhp and 127 Nm of torque. The finely honed injection system helps the 185 kg bike to control the enormous power. Other improvements to the bike include lower fuel consumption and emissions, improved gear shift linkage, new LED daytime running lights, a high gloss paint job and finally, the latest in hypersports tyre technology, the Dunlop SportSmart tyres.
SportSmart's pioneering Multi-Tread (MT) technology, developed through years of racing success at the highest levels, provides a tough central traction compound for straight-line stability, traction, braking and longer tread life, while its unique NTEC pressure-adjust system allows track day enthusiasts to optimise the tyre's performance by adjusting inflation pressure on circuit.
The result is a tyre that combines race-quality grip, wet-roads predictability and great touring mileage. In 2010, the globally-respected independent testing agency DEKRA put leading hypersports tyres through a gruelling test. DEKRA's results showed that a Suzuki GSX-R1000 rider would need just 3.64 Dunlop SportSmart tyres to cover 10,000 kilometres, the lowest figure of the tyres tested which included the Michelin Pure Power, Pirelli Diablo Rosso and the Bridgestone Battlax BT016 – and less than half the number of the Bridgestone tyres (7.88) needed for the same 10,000km test.
The SportSmart has also won an array of awards, accolades and praise from the industry specialists around the world including the UK's Motorcycle News and Germany's Motorrad magazine both made SportSmart their 2010 Tyre of the Year, as well as KTM selecting it as the original equipment tyre for its race-winning 1195cc RC8R streetbike. "There's no other tyre on the market that can offer such diverse performance," said Fast Bikes. "It could become the only tyre you'll ever need."
