Clearance is alot better than it was now that I've droped the bottom tripple clamp and shortened the manifold but I think I still might have to put some spacers under the fork springs.

Are you heading down to the gp mate?I'm real happy with the result, considering I did all the welding myself, it came up pretty good.

As for going to the GP, yeah I want to, but am still awaiting approval from the minister of finance and war.

Once again the little GS has emerged from the shed with a few more changes. Time for a couple of quick happy snaps and then it's back inside to get pulled apart again.

Hi

A while back i asked you a few questions about your turbo GS. I have a few more if you don't mind. First of all does it still run well and how many miles have you put on it? The second thing is about switching to fuel injection, how hard is it? I know that it will require a lot of patience but was it a huge pain? Did you have to use the gpz throttle bodies or could you use just about anything? Where did you find the turbo and do think it was a good match for the bike? Last thing is how much did it cost you in parts, i am able to do all the fabbing myself, i might need some help with the programming but i think i know someone who could help. Thank you for your time, i just really want to get some more info before i drop a bunch of money and time!

Thanks,

Luke

Luke, I only rode the bike for a total of about 45 miles, there were many problems I had to address. For starters the location of the turbo was wrong, as it over oiled from being too low and under heavy braking the front tyre rubbed against it. I have now raised it and moved it back as close to the engine as I could. This meant I had to modify the plumbing. I am currently working on an oil return system consisting of a oil resivour under the turbo and electirc scavenger pump and a couple of one way valves.

The injection was abit of a head ache for me, but luckily I have a mate who was willing to help out (Thanks Greg). I used the Gpz throttle bodies because that's what I could get my hands on at the time, but I sure there are many others you could use. I made up most of the hard ware for the injection (brackets, spacers etc) and left the wiring (and there is alot of wiring), programing and tuning to Greg.

Most of the turbo and injection parts I bought off Ebay.

I haven't been keeping and accurate record of the cost, (mainly because if my wife found out, she'd kill me), but I would estimate around $1500 - $2000, which is roughly enough to buy another GS 500.

It has been about 20 months since I first started this project and it still isn't finished, the time and cost involved have been more than expected. If you are really keen on trying this I wish you good luck. It's gunna be alot of fucking around. I definately won't be try'n it again and can only hope once I finally get it sorted that the engine doesn't expire too soon.

Thanks for the answers, what was the max boost? When did the turbo start to spool and how hard did it hit, enough to lift the front wheel?

Thanks again,

Luke

Iceman

Was running around 8 psi. Spooled early and smooth. Really just feels like riding a bigger bike.

Definately be worth it though when she's finished, if I get the R6 tail from evil bay I'm going to see how it will go on my ZX9R I'm hoping the smaller tail will make the Ninja's ass look a little more sexy.

Decided that I'd better get the GS going again and ready for AFR. Seeing it's been in bits since last April and now has new manifold, exhaust, relocated ignition and a whole different oil return setup, I thought I'd have a fair battle on my hands.

Needless to say I was surprised when, apart from a little dodgy plumbing in my fuel system, it started third go and seems to run fine. There's still a fair bit to do before I can take it out on the road, or runway for that matter. But I'm now one step closer to being at AFR.

Depends on who you ask, the misses say's it cost too much, but I have had no professional help therefore haven't had to pay for any parts to be made. What I can't do in the shed at home I can get done at work.

It's been an ongoing project for three years now.

I just stumbled across your GS - friggin awesome, congratulations!!!

I was wondering whether you would like to present it in the Gallery of our GS 500 Wiki (http://www.gs-500.info/index.php?title=GS-Galerie)

GS in the top left hand corner is mine btw.

saw the spread in stretfighters, reconised it instantly, you got a heart like a lion, i would like too turbo my efe or 1127, but really think its more hassle than its worth,,,(famous last words),,you really made a stonking job, and it does help when you can get a minute a work to knock up some bits, i recon 30% of my last build was completed at work, good luck with it, wish i could get too the AFR, but being 10,000 miles away dont make it easy,,

I was modifing my throttle linkages the other day and found that they were fouling on the cable adjuster. This would've been preventing the throttle from opening all the way. So not only will I have a fresh engine this year, but also another 15-20% more throttle. I can't wait to get it all back together and see what it goes like.
