Hey there, I'm in Qld and own a '96 Bandit. Have joined up to see if I can learn a thing or two off you wise folk. I have shagged my gearbox. It has been suggested that it could have been caused by wheel stands? I have never done a wheel stand, Officer, that clip on You Tube is not me...

Child support for little baby gitzy-gears must be expensive. That'll teach you to keep it in your pants.

Yeah, Bandits and gearboxes... I was riding mine and second locked up at about 20kmh. Don't know if second gear and mono's are related... me thinks yes. Are you shit at doing em like me? The damage is done when you put it down bad. Cracking your nuts on the tank is shit too.

Yeah, thanks for the welcome messages. A mate put me onto this web site just today. Seems like there are pleanty of other nutters who are into this streetfighter stuff too!
And a big welcome to PM80 with the stuffed bandit. A new gearbox and she'll be ready to crack your nuts on the tank once again...[B)]

Hey J_nake, you seem more interested in your nuts than my gearbox...
You are right but, I did do a lot of shit landings at the end of very short wheelies when I was learning.
I only got the bandit because everyone could pop a mono except me. A mate of mine told me to buy a bandit and if I couldn't ride it on one wheel I was a tool.
A bit more power, a big sprocket and the misses on the back and I was away! Until now, that is...

I haven't done to much to it. I will get some photos up. I ditched the fairing for a single light, big sprocket, ohlins front and rear. The guy before me had the engine rebuilt, he told me GSXR spec and different jets in the carbs. dunno whats in there but it goes well.
Was $2200 the only option?! I'm doing some searching on here at the moment looking for some advice.
Cheers.

I am most definately more interested in my nuts than your gearbox... So is my missus!
Bandits are a great bike for riding on one wheel. Shame the boys in blue dont take much of a liking to it. I have heard that riding on your front wheel is much easier on your gearbox.

Nah i dont think $2200 was the only option Pete, I was young and dumb 5 years ago and just said no worries mister and handed over the cash.. It took 9 weeks and most of the money was labour by memory, i have the receipts here somewhere think i got kinda screwed.. If I had my time over again now and after i've learnt a whole shite load more mechanically wise, i'd try and do it myself.. but overall, box felt brand new and i was happy with it..
bikes only done 38000kms and has only done about 2000 since box was done.. still starts every weekend and smooth as silk.

Funny you say that, mines done 45000Km. Doesn't seem like much to stuff a gbox.

Yeah thats what i thought, buuuut.. it was the bike I did learn to do wheelstands on and I was pretty harsh on 2nd, so prob only to be expected .. :D

Hey Hary,
I found your Bandit project on here, it is looking wild! I thought it must have been yours.
I have done a lot of hunting around on the forum and I think I might have a go at rebuilding the box myself. I cant make it worse I dont think??

Thanks Harry,
I have paid $400 to get it split and the problem identified. It needs 2 or 3 new gears, dogs, a shaft and a selector fork, I'm told. I guess you wouldn't put it back together without new bearings as well.
Now the big question... do I hock it and buy another bike for $3 or $4K that is probably just as good or better?
