View Full Version : Mounting GSXR1000k4 shock in 1100 Katana

hi there

im just wondering if anyone has done this kind of thing?
im already thinking that i will need to move my battery, or get a gel one i can lay on its side

but other than thst i need to know how the gsxr1000 shock mounts into the chassis on the original bike
does anyone know how long the shock is, without any weight on it?

if i know that i could make up a mock-shock to get me buy til a cheap one turns up somewhere :D

but if u happen to have a late model gsxr1000 pics would be greatly appreciated :)

one of the cool things about this is that im planning to have the same size wheels as the tiller i can have a pair of racey rubber and a set of commuter rubber and simply mix and match ;)

I have a couple of shocks here, Gsxr 750 96-99 350mm, Busa 330mm.
The busa also has the offset of the res on the other side.
For each you will need the right pivot.

i'll be making the upper pivot booster

will the busa shock mount up to the lower gsxr linkages?

Fimp, have you had a look at a GSX1100EF (ie 1135, 84' on)

Their frame is based on the Kat frame, except that it's a monoshock. You might even want to look at the EF swinger and linkages.

I have the manual, so can post pics out of it if you want.

Fimp the busa guys commomly put a gsxr 600 arm on to be able to lower for drags without the box hitting the battery.Just have to use the correct pivot for the arm or the shock doesn't line up thru the hole.
i'll try and get some pics tonite.

so from the looks of it a busa hock hould do the job?
basically looking for the shortest hock that'll do the job

would a busa have a stiffer spring than the gsxr1000? im thinking i will probably need a custom spring
either way cos kats a bit of a porker :D

Booster prolly answered this but here's the top of the K4 shock Length at rest (without me) is 13" or 33.5cm

Shock mount in the Kat The shock length at rest is 12" (31cm) so your crossbar positioning will depend on your shock length/linkage setup. I saw some mad Dutchy had done some wierd angles on his mount and it didn't work at all, so some planning will be needed:)

I'm not sure how the stock battery is mounted, but I think mine's been lifter up and back a bit to clear the shock.

our frames are suprisingly pretty different looking
im pretty sure my battery has also been moved (for the bracing)

looks like a piece of cake, with all the scrap steel plate we have laying around i should be able to rig something up thats pretty suitable
so is your damper-res facing forwards?

whats all the extra stuff under the seat there large?
bits for the bandit motor? doesnt look familiar at all

spring would definitely be too soft i imagine, but like i said
i would get a new one to suit

If you mean the K4 damper reseviour, that pic's from the rear. If you mean the Kat, it's behind the batt

The extra stuff is the remote reseviour for the GSXR K/L model shock and prolly some of the wiring shit

The rearsets were required due to [8D]ness and yes, I think the swinger would have hit.

i think that would save me a bit of trouble
but then again i seem to have a fair bit more room back there so i might be able to get away with a regular one

This is a good shot of the gsxr height adjuster.Always handy if you can fit it in, the busa mounts like the other pics Large posted of the custom mounts.

Spring rates will vary depending on pivots and arm length.busa is ~12kg/mm, srad gsxr 750 is ~7 and the 600 is ~8 from memory.
Racetech site can give you spring rates from different years but probably easiest to use the shock and spring that suits that arm or similar and see how it looks ,

yeah, the hieght adjutment look similar to the tillers setup

just looking at my chassis, and i am thinking that if im doing a monoshock setup
than the "X" bracing above my battery ATM would end up being redundant anyways
all it seems to do is transfer the existing shock mount loads to the forward part of the chassis

if i ditched those i could run an R1 battery horizontally and free up all the room where the chock is now :D

also, i might be able to get away with the standard pegs
but its pretty close, i would have to wait and see

the actual pivot of the shock looks like it will need to be trimmed down about 13mm or so each side to fit into the chassis to
be easiest to do at work, then i could do the new bearing surfaces on the mill and get em spot on ;)


i have designed up rearsets for the tiller, so if i have to go that route i could just make the mounts the same and make 2 sets

this is fun, aint it
hacking up perfectly good motorcycles :D

thats with a new spring to suit, of course
but could i hurt the damping, blow seals etc?

i figure that this way i will still have ride-hieght adjustment
i need to check to see if i would need to put extra bracing on the angle to stop it folding up

also i checked out the swingarm last night, i think i can swap the standard gsxr bearing bush thingies (little shafts the roller bearings run on) with something to suit the katana's swing-arm pivot

need to pull things apart on the weekend and take some measurements :D
