Most bikes will take a 200 tyre pretty easily or a 240 will go on with more work or if you are prepared for a slightly offset wheel.

cheers ben , im thinking 200 as the limit maybe even 190 as i still want it to handle but it has to look the goods too so i need to find a happy medium

How much difference does the offset make to handling Ben?

A 200 tyre needs the rim to be a max of 6.5" wide to work properly but preferably 6" wide. 99% of the car wheels that fit are 7" wide so that kind of stretches the 200 a fair bit distorting it's shape. A 210 tyre is the best option on a 7" rim and even that it better suited to a 6.5".

It's all a bit of a compromise and it will affect handling having a big back tyre on but the look is well worth it imo. If you find a decent looking 6.5" wide car rim let us know, I've searched and can't find a thing. Just bought a new car wheel from the US (only because it was never imported over here) so I might have a freshly powdercoated wheel up for sale shortly if ur interested (17x7, 4x100, ET40):)

When you start talking 240 & over a little offset makes bugger all difference to the way the bike handles. Remenber these arent going to be used as track bikes so for the street it's fine. Personally I don't like going more than 5-6 mm but some people go much more. From a looks point of view, with a 5mm offset your hard pressed to see the offset unless looking square on at the back of the bike & actually looking for it.

well it seems imposible to find a 17x6 or even 6.5 , am going to ring a rim modifing joint tomo that specialise in widening and speedway gear about chopping a 7 to a 6" rim but i think being a alloy it will be a no go , a 7" with a 210 isnt going to fit unless i have some offset but i would prefer to keep it tracking straight , a car rim specialist tried to steer me away from doing it as the bike tyre compared to a car tyre bead is different and he said it wont seat properly , i can see where he is comming from as it is different but it is still 17" i cant see it being a problem

maybe other options is a 17x5.5 unsure of offset and pcd but im guessing it would be similar to a vfr 800

Hyno, if your after a smaller rim width, try modular wheels, that is to say 3 piece rims, or even 2. Center hub & spokes with an outter hoop. These generaly can be changed and made to suit. For a single wheel, wouldnt have a clue on costs though. That is if your looking at buying brand new wheel, second hand would be alot harder to find.
Wheels like billet ones can be made to spec with PCD's and hoop widths and even offsets.
Shoot these guys a email and ask, couldnt hurt http://www.showwheels.com.au/home.php
Just a thought mate.

Sorry for the Highjack, but anyone put a car wheel on a ducati swingarm and if so did u need to modify the hub at all

JackTar

I believe it takes a fair bit more work mate as the Ducati is a single nut as opposed to the four (or is it five) that the VFRs use.

Whilst we are digging up threads what size car rim would you need for a 240? Anyone?

This is from Avon Motorcycle Tyre Chart Jacktar, so at a guess I'd say
either. Ouch $471 a tyre..

18 x 8.0 inch
18 x 8.5 inch
18 x 9.0 inch

hi guys, just on the 240 size, has anyone done a 240 tyre on a 17 or 18 inch rim fitted to a vfr750 swinger? Looking fr the right rim width for a 240 wide tyre[8D]

hyofighter

some info that may help some , after looking into this with no real sucess for the vfr i can getaway with a 190 on a 6"-6.5" rim on the vfr and still keep the bike tracking straight , a 7" rim would be ideal but it throws the centre line of bike to contact patch out and the wheel will be offset not by much but i dont want that , for other guys out there that put the vfr SSSA into other frames they may be able to offset the the swinger more to the left side and be able to get a wider rim and still have the bike track straight , i did the ring around and no one makes a 6" wide honda 17" car rim , you can get a 2 piece rim made but $$$$ a speedway mob said that they would cut down a alloy rim to make it 6"-6.5" but would not garentee it would hold together at warp speed , so the viffer is retaining the standard rim just copping a 180 tyre and im on the hunt for another standard rim if anyone has one as a skid rim

Gday Hyo

was on another forum and a question asked indicated that both ducati and Triumph hubs will fit into the honda SSSA - Triumph and VFR hubs are interchangeable that way - Triumph T955i hub slides straight in to the VFR swinger, you can even use the VFR cush drive, caliper but you would need to use the Triumph Disc/wheel

Ducati work also, but you need everything. The bearing carrier is the same size as the Honda and Triumph

They indicate the offset difference betweeen the honda and trumpy is about 13mm

The trumpy comes with a 6" rim as standard and 190/50 although can squeeze a 200 onto it but some people reckon it affects the handling a little

Cheers Watto

I went from a 200/50 to a 190/55 on the B-King.
Felt and turned in much nicer.

know what you are saying Tony - a lot of the trumpy fellas downsize to a 180 on a 6'inch rim for the same reason as the early trumpys were a bit renknown for running wide unless you fitted a shorter draglink/went to a smaller tyre although lots of tyre shops say that the 180 is designed more for a 5.5'rim - I don't the politics off it all tho

My '08 Speed 3 is a 5.5" and 180/55 standard. It's not unusual for people to fit a 190 but, as you say, will make the bike slower to turn in, change direction etc...

Tony Nitrous

Look at the profile as well as the size.
To me a 190/55 feels different (better)
on a long lazy bike than a 190/50.

Might not be ideal for something shorter / more sporty to start with ?

The 200 or 190, 50 or 55 certainly has an effect,
more so on some bikes than others.

Joe Crazymofo would be the guy to ask.
