I can't remember the last protest I went to without my trusty carton of orange juice...

I have never been stupid enough to attend a demonstration that is known well beforehand to be potentially violent.

An innocent newspaper seller got killed at the same event after a beating by the pigs. The 2nd independant autopsy paid for by his family then showed the real cause of death as the beating.

Back in the uk in a mini riot at the local mall a 4' high, 40kg soaking wet, young girl was knocked to the ground and held down by 2 policemen 'cos they felt 'threatened' by her.
She must have had a weapon either in her mini skirt or the skin tight t-shirt she was wearing...

As far as I know, in our society we still have the right to protest and demonstrate peacefully.
But both the police and protesters are going to have members amongst them who just want to have a blue.
Clubbing a woman across her legs twice with a baton even if she is threatening you with orange juice or in your face is heavy handed and using excess force.
I do not know if this following quote is relevant to this thread but it definitely came to mind.

I'm still oldschool enough to believe that you don't hit ladies, ever, and that still stands today. Whether or not this woman qualifies is up to you.
The question I'd like to ask is this: How many screaming, volatile girls does it take to incite violence in a mob that may or may not already be primed for action?
She may not have posed an immediate physical threat to the bloke, but I do think her actions needed to be curtailed one way or another before a whole bunch of people got hurt.
I've never been in that situation, so it's not fai for me to criticise any of the participants, but I think there's alot more involved here than most commentators are aware of.

Yes the cops can be heavy handed(i've copped a beating) but you dont beat them by protesting.

For example...imagine if EVERYBODY boycotted BP garages for a week in protest at the fuel prices....country wide..they would have to take notice...but it will never happen...far easier to complain endlessly to each other about rising prices.
I salute those that choose to protest in the streets against injustice....Not the rioters who are there for fun (like the idiots trashing a Bob James tyre shop cos the racing was cancelled) but the genuine people who are prepared to stand up for what they believe in.
