Hi all - first post. My name's Chris.
I just bought a '92 Gsxr 750, you can see it here:
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/547/gsxr0031er.jpg
I was going to respray and re-sticker it, but i'm leaning towards 'streetfighter-ing' it.
Can you suggest what i'd need, and how much it'd cost, for a basic handlebars conversion?
Can i just buy these for $130?
http://www.austreetfighter.com.au/scart/html/81.html
Or do i really need these for $420 ?

So, if i can use the cheaper ones for $120, why would anybody spend $420 ?
Well, if you've used both then i guess thats proof.
Any recommendations on places to buy this stuff from?

The top Yoke looks and is of TOP quality mate, The risers are a much cheaper alternative BUT can look good too if done properly. Stu from AUstreetfighter is the best man to hook ya up mate!

Keep the clip-ons!
you will need to drill your top yolk for standard MX risers, but you dont need to with a billet top yolk conversion.i didnt look at the links but i presume this is what your asking. There is more to buildin a fighter than just Mx bars but like willow said ya can keep the clipons and still build 1.Welcome aboard mate, your colour scheme looks kinda gay so strip it and build a fighter.you can always return it to standard if ya dont go too far but just wait till ya get the bug.
cheers

i would get the cheap ones, then just get them welded to your top triple clamp
either that or use some big bloody washers to spread the load on the bottom triple clamp
nice clean lookin gixxer though

what bohem said they both work just as well but the triple clamp set looks much nicer i used the triple clamp on a street fighter and just the risers on a stunt bike and had no trubles with either

Hey Chubs, I fitted the top triple clamp setup from Stu at Austreetfighters to my 92 1100, it fit like a dream and looks the shit.
If you go the cheap way and drill the top clamp to fit the risers,I reckon you'd need to weld up the underside of the top clamp to get some meat under there for them to hang on to.
I got the fat bars that Boh mentioned and they are pretty sweet but you will need to go with bar end mirrors as the normal diameter mirror clamps don't fit on the fat bar. Unless you come up with something cleverer than I can, which aint hard.
Standard diameter bars would have given more options tho.
You also need longer brake and clutch lines with MX bars. Stu will sell you 6" over lines. Check 'em on the website.
I agree Willow, clip ons on a streetfighter are still cool.
Cheap too because you already have them, but my wrists are too old and overworked for em (especially the right one).
Depending on your funds, losing the fairing, fitting some headlights and replacing the Blue Oyster Bar paint on the tank with straight black would be a fine start for not too much money.
Probly paint the wheels too.

just use standard risers and drill the top yoke. I have had this arrangment for the last 2 years on my 7/11w and never had a problem.
really your risers arn't under huge stress - wouldn't weld to the top triple as it looks shit house.
you will have to lengthen the clutch cable by about 75mm and also your throttle cables by about 50mm.
i used an R6 (i think) front brake line as the original is to short when using mx bars. I have used fat bars and got all the mirror mounts and stuff to fit no problems.

deano - your bike looks tops!

So - if you use the fat bars, does the throttle, light switches, and all those fiddly little bits still fit on?

They taper at the ends after the final bends mate. The switch gear area is the same diametre as normal.

All fits mate. with room to spare.
How'd you go with the Fat Bars you were after Gix?
And what is the brake lever/reservoir unit you're using Deano? Standard or aftermarket?

Thanks for all the info, especially deano. So, the shopping list is:
Universal risers
MX fat bars
mirrors + mirror to bar mounts
longer clutch / throttle cables
longer brake line
headlight setup - what do i need???
But all the electrical wiring will reach in your experience?
I just want to price it all up and buy it all in one big hit, and get it all installed in one weekend rather than have the bike half finished in my garage for weeks. Especially since i ride to work.

chalky- ZX7R master mate inc res.
chubs - use your existing throttle cables and clutch cables and legthen them. that way you get all the proper bends and fittings but abit longer. I will post ou a photo of what i did.
yes the electrical will reach.
go for pro taper fat bars mate and don't pay more than $150 (if you do they are ripping you off)
you will need to buy risers with a flat bottom. most of the mx gear you buy to suit fat bars will have the adapter bit underneath so they can be adapted to 7/8 risers. I brought the latter style and got the adapter machined off and then got some spacers made so the bars cleared the top of the forks
if i was doing it again i would just buy a set of risers in the height to suit from quickdraw as the ones that he sells have flat bottoms
when you order risers be carefull to get some that will allow the bottom of the bars to clear the top of the forks.
go to a bike wrecker and ask to have a look through their brake lines to score something longer or even better, instead of fucking around with a rubber brake line for $50 buy a set of HEL braided brake lines from quickdraw (equal length not over the guard) shouldn't cost any more than $150 and will improve your brakes heaps.

Chalky - Nah mate. Funds have dried up for the last two weeks so I don't want to piss myself of by finding some. I think it might be a case of checking some German sites again! Those fat bars on the fat arse Blade that was posted last week might be on the right track?

the underneath of the top clamp. note that the holes for the risers are quite close to the sides of the clamp. I actually had to grind a bit on the side away to fit the nut on the bolt

chubs. when you ditch the fairings you will loose your steering dampener mount. I made up this bracket so i could use the original dampener

G'day chubs, mate I did the same as Deano- drilled top triple, with no re enforcement and had no issues. Thats on a 92 blade, but from the pics, looks pretty similar.
It can take some fucking around, but you'll get there!
Good luck, have fun mate!

Here are the photos. As you can also see, currently i've got a tank bag that i've managed to neatly secure underneath the rear seat - its really convenient. But a rear seat cowl would be really nice too! Tell me if the seat looks like it'll fit.
Also i've got a photo of how the handlebar weight turned out after hitting it with the wire brush.
