I have the opportunity to purchase this -

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1267787453.jpg

Apparantly it has been registered in Qld at some stage of its life but has spent its past years in bears racing. I want to whack a set of twin headlights and a cafe seat on it and get it registered in NSW

Is this going to be possible? Can you guys in the know give me some clue about whether this can happen and how difficult getting rego will be?

Thanks

It is a Harris Magnum MkII and it has the following.

Motor was rebuilt and has yet to be fired in anger
Mikuni flat slides
Carbon Yoshimura Exhaust
Dyna Ignition and coils
Spare barrels and a 1180 big bore kit

Frame was modified to run 17" wheels. The forks and wheels are off a ZX9 and are fully adjustable.
The rear shock was rebuilt

If it's got a compliance plate life is going to be a lot easier for you. Either way if the price is right it's worth doing, I think you'd be able to register it as a hand-made frame

There's a vin number on the frame but previous sandblasting has made it unreadable.

I can get the whole lot for $6K

I've been thinking long and hard about which way to go with this bike and have decided on 80's endurance racer (think Heron Macintosh)

Like this Bandit.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1271673368.jpg

I am thinking that the frame rails on the harris are similar to the bandit and the bandit tank should be able to be fitted.

Add the seat unit from a 1990 GSXR and you are getting there

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1271765399.jpg

Not sure about where to get the half fairing yet.

You guys know a lot more about these builds than me, do you reckon this is acheivable?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Not 100% sure that is a Magnum 2

Unless the frame has been modified from standard it looks to me like the endurance frame not the Manum 2

Now i can't remember the classification of this frame but there was one here in western australia fettled by the very clever Frank kittler for a guy who used to work on the rigs (read shitloads of money)

The section near the rear shock appears different to what I have seen before.

Maybe you guys from 'ol blighty might have more info but doesn't look like a Mag 2 to me.

The give away is the shot from behind where you can see most of the engine, all Mag 2's you can't see the back of the engine.

These frames were supposed to be the ducks nuts.

You can see the difference with mine heaps different at the rear, although mine is a Magnum not Mag 2 but they were virtually identical except for bodywork.

There should be a frame number on the headstock starting with HP.....
you will be able to track from this, no compliance were ever fitted to a Harris frame as they would have had to provide the Dept of Transport with frames for destruction testing and of course they didn't build enough to be able to do this.

Go the Herron, have a look at the beautiful replica in this thread

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17730&SearchTerms=herron

or something like this

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YbYu0YNDvzc/SWDd4hRQX-I/AAAAAAAAABs/LDjQ6Pt8xkc/s1600-h/Yoshimura_GS_1000_R_Cooley-Crosby_1980_03.jpg

Won't a slingy seat unit be a bit too rounded for the look you're after? I'd think you need either a slabbie or the replica unit from HMR in the above thread.

When I was researching new bodywork for my slabbie I found Homebush Fibreglass has them at a good price, you'll definately want glass rather than plastics so you can cut and shut to make it work on you're frame.

I think the Bandit you've got a picture of is actually a japan only Suzuki GS1200 model that came a few years later, a retro slabbie tribute based on a Bandit that to my mind is just a bit ugly

http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/suzu/suzuki_gs1200%2001.htm

You could use a slabbie fairing to get the look at a pinch but at this rate you may as well buy a slabbie :)

Thanks for reminding me that I've been letting the team down: Get fucked you stupid fuck, give up now, you'll never finish a project coz you're a noddy, my dick's bigger than yours. If you don't like that go have a whinge to Stu.

Hopefully that restores the balance

Going to take this advice and work on getting it on the road first up.

I bought the twin headlights from this bike a while ago

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1272249750.jpg

I am going to use a Veypor dash and am thinking about frame mounting the lights, dash and some sort of flyscreen/small screen (ala Speed trip) as there is a bracket already mounted to the headstock.

Does anyone have any pics or links to bikes that have these big chrome bug eyes and are also using some kind of fly screen?

Need some advice guys.

I had decided to do as many had suggested and put the Harris on the road pretty much as is in this photo. Just add lights and go.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1273260857.jpg

Trouble is, when we set the 675 tail unit up at a height to give me some room to get my feet on the pegs (I am a big unit) and at an angle that looks right, the subframe sticks out like dog's balls. Finding a place for the battery to live is also a problem.

An endurance racer seat unit in which I could house the battery behind the seat would solve the problem. Something like this.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1273227845.jpg

Any suggestions, ideas from the collective wisdom of this place would be most appreciated

Gitzy

Mate I rate that 675 tail very very highly, it moderns up your whole look.. i think maybe if you get it moulded into the tank somehow, I'm not a fan of the endurance racer tail, I mean it looks great on that zook, but I dont think it would suit the Harris.. My 2 Cents.

BANDITROD

use an r1 batt and you can lay it on its side that will make it easier to hide and looking at the pic of your tail it is sticking out there thats for sure if you shorten it so that when side on the tip is not past your wheel it will look shitloads better

This bike must have small battery mounted on its side above the pods. Yes?

Its flat and follows the frame rails Rod

Hagarr

Forget under the Tank!!!

I'm currently fitting a CBR 600 '04 rear to my Harris and would have liked to have more "Kick" in the rear but same as you said, the frame rails show.

Battery will fitunder the rear pillion section on its side.

Hagarr
08-05-2010, 07:21 PM
I originally wanted to use the R6 tail but you just couldn't fit anything under the tail, hence I went for the CBR6 which allows you to fit the battery underneath the pillion section of the tail.

Been away for a while but the build is finally heading in the right direction.

This bike is the bike that I have dreamed of owning since I started riding, its almost finished, I'm not going to paint a thing except the rusty Yoshi pipes (black), and the fork lowers (black)
