Been looking for something to motard for a while now since I am back up north, just prefer to have something that I chuck a set of drit tyres on and do some off road as well. Been looking for a while and I managed to pick this up for a decent price. 2003 WR450F with a Safari long range tank and Renthals. The plastics a mint and there is not even any wear marks on the frame. New some new tyres but other than that should be good to go. If anyone has some hook ups for reasonable (sub $1000) motard conversions for these then let me know. Other than that I will chuck on a pipe and get it re jetted to suit and have some fun.

The only issue is now that I will probably have to sell the daytona because 4 cars and 3 bikes is excessive with a baby on the way so promise not to laugh too much when I put the thing on ebay.

No such thing as a cheap motard conversion, I'm sorry everyone wishes but it just don't happen unless you're very very lucky. Mind tho I love my 'tard and every dollar spent was well worth it. With the Aussie Dollar up around the 90 cent mark sometimes it's cheaper to source them from the states.

http://www.procycle.us/main/supermoto.htm
Postage should be around $150 import duties can throw another $150 on top, but it's damn cheaper than local.

Otherwise......
Best bet is to check http://www.supermotoaus.com/index.php every so often, occasionally one of the boys has bits to sell.

What are you guys with tard conversions doing about cush drives? Do the Talon etc. hubs accept them or are you just running without them? Any dramas?

crush drives are not really that neccisary. unless you are doing a tonne of road kms.

checkout ghienhart wheelsets.

Thanks for all the info guys, gave it a bit of a birthday over the weekend. Did the grey wire mod, opened up the airbox and gutted a standard pipe. I cleaned out the carb and lift the slide a notch as well as I have heard that these are lean from the get go. Fitted some bark busters and she is good to go. Lofts the front wheel pretty easy, just having trouble coming to terms with the lack of braking (compared to the daytona). I was bidding on a slipper clutch on fleabay but got sniped at the last minute. Will have to sell the Daytona to fund further progress but it is fun to be on a big dirt bike again. Can't wait for the motard rims and tyres to go on. Will definitely be going for the 320mm brake upgrade as well.

Ooooh slipper clutch.. come on mate if your aiming for a slipper, you can afford a quality set of rims.. ;) Talon do have a cush drive setup, for sure.. theres a set of 17 inch Talon/Bulldog/SMpro combo hangin on wall at KTM Newcastle i think there a bit dearer though, not sure of advantages/disadvantages of having one though?? Mates 09 SMC690 standard slipper clutch and cush drive but well hey thats 16k of Austrian goodness.. I dont think you'll need a cush setup but some of the guys on here or Oz supermoto would know way more than moi. keeps us updated either way..

Can you do the reverse? Could I put wire wheels on my VTR1000? Or would that require crazy custom shit?

I seriously cant see why not mate, i have seen it before, wire wheels on big roadies it does look good in my book, The talon hubs are hollow so you choose bearings and spacers to suit your model or they do it for you (people you buy off). also they make 3.5inch front and they takes a 120 easy as far as I know, and they also make a 5inch rear so theres your 180 tyre, I know this is a SV650 but you get the general idea..

I gotta talk to Ben soon about doing a few things, this might be added into the mix.. that SV looks porn with those wheels.

Pappas, been there and done the mods :o) just have to jet the carby and advance the exhaust cam and we should be good. Scotty mac, how much are you chasing for the bits? drop me an email if you don't want to do it here. Looks like this could be some fun....

pappas
11-03-2010, 03:59 PM
By advance the exhaust cam you mean change it with a YZ cam don't you? You can't advance the WR450's exhaust cam as it fucks up the auto decompression.

nelpd96
11-03-2010, 05:51 PM
I was going to have a look but from what I have read not all cams were effected but you are right they were saying that the auto decomp dicks around with things. Just need to get it in for a RWC next week so I can start playing. The shed turns up tomorrow hopefully so that will slow things down a little but once it is up at least I will have somewhere decent to work on stuff.

Yeah cheers I got it will give you a buzz tomorrow. Mind you just had the realisation that if I swap the swing arm then I am not going to be able to put the knobbies back on when I want to do enduro stuff so may not be feasible.

Just a bit of an update, managed to pick up a std tank and shrouds as well as a set of rims and tyres from a 2008 Kwaka 250R which should look ok. Just about to send the forks and rear shock off to get revalved and resprung to suit my fat arse and change of riding style. Will post some more updates when I get the chance.

Cheers

Haven't been on here much as I have had plenty else happening and since I sold the Daytona I feel like a bit of a traitor. But among my eleventy billion projects at the moment I have been stuffing around with motard rims for the WR. I picked up a set of rims complete from a 2009 Ninja 250 for $350 delivered from there a big bit of 4340 a lathe and more stuffing around than was probably worth it and we have gotten to this stage. A couple little things to finish off but should be riding by the weekend.

Cheers
Paul

The Mighty boy is getting the running gear from the swift that is sitting next to it put in there. I have already upgraded the front suspension and the engine is sitting in there just need to finish of the engine mounts. Once complete the car will get a respray. The end state is to have the GA10 fitted with EFI and a turbo. Should make it good for around 100hp at the wheels.
