Never had any luck stripping powder coat off anything with stripper, some wheels are painted so stripper will work, but blasting is the best method to remove powdercoat.

What about that oven cleaner stuff mentioned in the "how to polish" section on home page? if that stuff removed anondising etc, wouldnt it be good enough to remove powdercoating?

I had a major fire on a bike back in the uk (total burnout [V])...pinhole under the fuel tank......whoosh.....even that didn't remove the powder coating on the frame...just turned it black.

Paint stripper will get it off easily.
I did the same with my Bandit wheels and the paint practically fell off.

You can remove powdercoat with paint stripper but it will take approx. the rest of your life to do it, powdercoat doesn't just bubble up & fall off like paint does, it comes off a couple of microns at a time & if the surface was porous before coating, you'll never get the colour residue off anyway.
PLEASE take my advice, blasting or chemical dipping is the only way to go. It costs about $100 for a steel tube style frame or $20 for a rear wheel for either method here in Melbourne.

I agree. I tried to remove some powder coat and all stripper did was slightly soften the surface. Blast it !!

Yea, your standard GSXR wheels should strip straight off with paint stripper. I had the same white wheels you do on my bike and did it.

most powdercoating plants(big ones) have stripping tanks, beats the hell out of blasting

tanks ...guys ill have a go its just the only guy willing to blast me wheels is a bit of an animal [he blasts concreting gear and his equip looks a bit ropey anyway]
im just gonna piant them black and polish the outer rims maybe do a bit of engraving on em [dont worry not the swirly type of stuff summat subtle you have to get down on yer knees to see]

we do alot of powdercoating at work and have used a few powder strippers with good results. I dont know if you guys can get stuff from eastwood but they have some stuff that works good. www.eastwood.com we are using the eco friendly stuff but both work well. We also have some new stuff we are going to try out thats only $17usd a gallon and you mix 50/50 with water.

oh yeah the powder comes off very quickly.

I use Methelene Chloride to strip powdercoat & paint. It's nasty stuff but it works,it is the main ingredient in paint stripper.

Contact a major chemical company,I'm sure Tweedy has an account with one of them for solvents or cleaners or degreasers and they should know or let you know who to speak to. We used to get it from Tac Chemicals but i'm sure they changed names.

Hi,
the difference between powdercoating that strips easy and full bastard is how well it was applied in the 1st place. Some coaters just blast and coat there aluminium.I only use coaters that have acid tanks. After blasting(unless mill finish) the alloy is dipped in hydrochloric acid which fully cleans the metal.then its dipped in chromate which forms a primed surface(yellow lookin).then its ready for coating. My powdercoater produces quality work with attention to detail and gives a 15 year gaurantee. It won't come off without blasting.

theres some trik shit being produced by coaters these days, including coloured anodised finishes and hybrid clear coats. I'll wack up some samples soon.

cheers

Would you have to change Pete Wood to be in porn?

I thought his name would be perfect as it was.
