View Full Version : Iceman's new project - Katana

Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted one of these. Saw this one cheap on the bay of E and thanks to my parents was able to buy it. I know some of you will say it's not a real Kat, but to me these have always been my 'dream bike'. I'm hoping to pick it up on the weekend and as soon as it's rego'd in my name I will start adding my own personal touches to it. A color change will be one of the first things on my list.

That colour is fucking sickning but with a 180 rear and some new forks and shocks and a bit of paint she'll be a stunner

I used to have one of those. Got it with 7000km on it for $4200. Traded it in and got $4200 after stacking it on the Great Ocean Rd, T-bonied a car, got side swiped and knocked over in a pub car park and clocked it up to 47000kms. Never missed a beat. A mate bought it from the shop for $4200 and clocked it up to 87000km then sold it for $4750. I still like them. Put fat wheels, upside downies and a GSXR1100 donk in it[:p]

Used to have a GSX750ES, first big legal bike.
Mate had a pop-up Kat.

The two seemed to share a lot of parts under the different plastics's.

Never did like the 16" front wheels on either,
or the Kats funny flat clocks.

Some had indicators built into the tail piece.
Pretty sure they weren't legal in the UK as many were sold
with them blacked out and wider indicators fitted.

Interesting project.
Not my dream bike, but I'd have one at the right price.

Look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Good to see sumfin diffrent going on now.My life long mate J,LO has two of these in variuos stages. His plan is to slip an EF that has been warmed up into one with wire wheels. One thing though Clint ;) if you have trouble starting it, they have a tilt sensor & to reset it look under the rear cowl. Now get to work :D

Thanks for the tip Mundy. I gotta get the little GS outa the way before any major work starts on this one. It'll be small subtle mods to start and a full rebuild a bit later

Tony, I got in contact with that guy last week. He might hook me up with some plastics, as my front fairing is all bog and glue at the moment.

Unfortunately not. $1k bill to repair the ute's gearbox after AFR has prevented me from tweaking any of my bikes. Looks like the RF might have to hit the Bay of E so I can have some play money.

What tail are you putting on it?
And are you putting more bracing on that top shock mount?
Just looks quite long and thin is all?

Iceman
19-02-2011, 07:26 AM
I'm leaving the standard body work on it. I might give it a fenderectomy and cut the flap off the back.

Still try'n get my head around the shock mounts at the moment. I've made them like little pieces of I-beam with small triangles coming off the sides. They are all 6mm thick mild steel, but I do agree they do need a bit more bracing. I was thinking of trying to utilise the stock mounting and make a piece that comes around the frame brace and connects to the new top mount. It's a bit had to explain, but it makes sense in my head.

I'll have a few hours spare this weekend so I'm hoping to get some shed time. I'll post up some more pics too.

21-02-2011, 07:40 PM
If you paint it silver with red tank stickers it will make it look a bit more like a REAL Katana ;)
You know you want to. [^]
All bullshit aside though, check out Ebay item No. 290533627870 in completed listings, it's the best looking tail mod I've seen on a <s>pretend</s> Popup.

Iceman
21-02-2011, 08:01 PM
I agree, that is a good looking tail, but I've got a set of rear indicators coming for the stock rear light so I'm gunna keep it stock......ish.

TurboKat
21-02-2011, 08:06 PM
At least cut the little downy bit off then.
Hang on... I just noticed another Popup in the background !
Are you trying to corner the market or somethn?
I think KevKatana should build a Katana too... Kev?... Kev?

Iceman
21-02-2011, 08:32 PM
Oh yeah, i had enough spares to throw another one together. No motor though :(.

I think Mr Blanks needs a motor for his black Kat, you don't have a spare one he could borrow for the weekend do ya?

TK asked for an update on this. Well it looks about the same as it did a year ago, but has more dust on it!

I need to figure out what offset I need for the front sprocket so I can have one made. I also need to make a link pipe for the exhaust. I have spoken to Kev@VCM about a seat that'll turn a few heads. A few other bits and pieces needed such as brake lines, dash, leds for the front.

The biggest problems are, I have no time and even less money to spend on my bikes!
