Deus Ex Machina SR542 40K.. Thoughts??

I'm just wondering were the 40k worth of kit is in this thing.. I'm assuming its Oz dollars obviously because its an Oz shop.. but I just can't see 40k, I'd gladly drop the Bandit into Extreme Creations and hand Ben 40k and say go nuts, and I do actually like this SR542 thing, cant imagine it wouldn't be all balls, but it def looks different but i can see maybe 10-15k max..

I mean to maybe build one yourself..
brand new SR400 off them - $9000
pro taper bars - $100-$200
ohlins front forks - not sure... but could use gixer or other forks for less than 1k
braking 320mm rotor - $200
braking 4 piston caliper -$500
various other stuff - say $2000

I know theres lots of labour involved because they have to build you one, but i'm just thinking personally that price seems extravagantly large.. any one else have a thought on this.. maybe someone on here knows the whole build process or someone who works there and why they cost so much..

Seriously though, you're paying for the brand, like anything that's "fashionable", the cost to make it is irrelevant, it's worth whatever people will pay.. and in Deus' case, people will pay LOTS.

Beautiful bikes, I love them, but there's no way i'd ever pay that much for one..

There is probably $4k in the wheels alone if they are using decent hubs, but I agree, there are a lot more things I would rather spend 40k on.

Deus are creating their own market niche by overpricing their product. Which means only a few people will buy / afford them. That makes them elite.

Being deeply involved in the chop and brit bike scene I can tell you there stuff isnt that heavely engineered its nearly all bolt on and sorced from Japan.
They have just used boutique advertising and appeal to the cashed up set to make there way.

They actually make more from there apparal then from the bikes as most of them are priced out of the reach of the sane.
And besides
After paying 20K for a TW200 id be pissed if i got beat off the lights by the local postie.

Also most people who ride Deus bikes are seen as somewhat as a standing joke by the larger riding community.
And I can tell you I get more people talking to me about my fighter then the wank who turned up on the SR with the momo lid and the chinos.

Its just a shop for moths... Bright lights and shiney things

Pretty much anyone could replicate the bikes, as Weasel said they use mostly bolt-on parts. What people can't replicate, is their marketing and brand. The owner of Mambo helped build up Deus.. he knows how to market to yuppies etc. The yuppies don't care what the bike is.. hell, half of them don't even KNOW what parts are on their Deus bike (we go there for coffee sometimes, the questions you hear the potential-buyers asking the salesmen are hilarious and embarrassing at the same time!).. they just know it's a "Deus", and that's all they care about.

Creating a product is easy. Creating a BRAND is what will make you a killing these days. Look at BAPE, Ed Hardy, Gucci, or if you wanna talk vehicles, look at Tempe Tyres, Queen St, etc.. all those brands take some random cheap shit usually made in china, with nothing special about it, brand it, and sell it for a fucktonne.

Sen said it pretty well. I like the shop and a few of their bikes, but I won't ever pay full price for one of them.

An old biker spotted a Deus t-shirt I was wearing out in Broken Hill a few years ago and asked me if I worked there or owned a Deus... I said I could barely afford the t-shirt. He replied "Yeah... Deus ex Machina, from the Latin for "God, what an exxy machine!" :D

The latest AMCN mentiones that Billy Joel just bought a bike from Deus after seeing one parked in Sydney and visiting the store. They now have an outlet in Los Angeles as well, so full marks to them for their marketing. The other guy behind it is Rod Hunwick, the guy behind Action Suzuki and the Hunwick Hallam/Harrop bikes of a few years back.

Why would you bother, it's just an sr400? There are heaps of bikes on here bigger better and cheaper than that thing.

well there's the SR400 cafe racer that Harley from RB Racing built for his father. It's not as flashy as the Deus but is very cool and and it cost him less than 5 grand including the bike

I can see $20000 AUS in this machine. $10000 in parts $10000 in nut and bolt time, charged at about $70-$100 per hour ( every piece, nut and bolt has been, modified (if required) striped, blasted, coated, checked assembled, etc. It does not matter what you may think about the looks or performance of the machine, this is what it costs a company to do a built like this.... ( remember this is not constructed at night in a shed during spare time)

Then add a business model with a profit margin requirement, to enable the company to grow...... add 100%, hence the $40000. This is quite standard until demand increases................ >>>>>>>>>>>>> Then the price goes UP then settles back down to what the economy allows.

If the brand is wanted and percieved as needed, name your price..........


Gucci sunglasses cost $10 at the gook factory, $75 to sun glass hut , $200-$400 to you!!!!!

Remember Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha etc produce their 1000cc bikes for about $2500. Our dealers pay about $10000............ $18000 run out sale. They are still making good coin...

Small production runs equal higher costs...... eg, Ducati half the bikes, same performance( maybe), twice the price.........

Not quite true. There is a lot of bespoke fabrication from a shed in Sydney. All the shitty little bits that you need for the shiney bits to work is made on a piece by piece basis here.
