Just curious.. me and a mate wanna ride around oz next year.. and there's no f'ing way I could do it on the VTR [xx(]

What would you use? Preferably under $10k..

Just looking for ideas on models etc now, not gunna buy it til end of this year.

Something comfortable, but still with balls, and something that's reliable.

If I was sticking to the blacktop, Busa, or maybe a Goldwing. If I was taking the "scenic route" Gs1200 adventure. Not sure about under $10K though. I'd probably get a loan for however much I needed then sell the bike when I got back for $1-2K less than I paid for it. Still a cheap round Aus holiday.

There's a bucketful of GSX14's under 10K at the moment.....

Dex: Yeah, was thinking of the loan thing, but I wanna do a few trips, so hoping to get something I can keep aside for that sort've stuff (geared up with racks and shit). Also, there's a good chance the bike wouldn't come back in the same condition it left in ;)

DiscoDan: Never heard of them, looks like an OK option.

Hillsy: DEFINITELY something I could work with.. didn't realise they were that cheap now..

Suzuki V-Strom 650.

Cheap as - new they're not much more than $10K. Easy to cart heaps of gear.
Huge fuel range. Comfy. Easily handle the dirt roads without boring you senseless on the long long bitumen sections.

After being rentrenched last year, I rode 22,000km+ round Oz in 7 weeks on my Triumph Scrambler.

Unless you're going adventuring all of the riding is very easy - any bike will easily do it.

DR-650 simple and go forever and there's about 3.5 million pages of info on ADV rider

Thanks for all the suggestions guys..

Loving the idea of the busa, bandit, or GSX14 since they're all on my "own these one day" list..

God, what advice ya got? I've never ridden further than sydney to mac pass haha..

Our plan was to do it pretty basic.. just a bunch of cash for fuel/food/etc, couple sets of clothes and some basic tools/puncturekits/etc, and see what happens. No planned route etc.

Yeh mate, I rekon early model busa would be unreal 4 it! That was an idea i was toying with for a wicked road trip like around Oz one day...

blackbirds are cheap these days. surely theyd be comfy and reliable!!

Hillsy

A bloke I work with bought a DR650 brand new for $7990 on the road [:0] 12 months rego, 2 year warranty. Hard to beat that for value for money ;)

Also the V-Strom 650's are selling for around $10.5 K on the road - which makes the odd off-road encounter less daunting....

You're probably more confused now than ever :D

Haha Hillsy yeah, so many options. I just don't know enough about all the diff models.

I'm definitely leaning towards a 'busa.. i've always wanted one, and i'm a bigger bloke, so a 600 etc i'd probably get bored with ;) A blackbird, bandit, or GSX14 would also be top of the list when shopping-time comes.

And yeah Fightfan, i've been dreaming of doing it since before I even rode bikes. One of the main things that got me into bikes is the idea of doing epic trips like that around oz, asia, europe, etc. Oz will get me started though ;)

Hey Sen,

Best advice is do your own thing, keep planning to a minimum - as you say make it up as you go along and not to rush.

If you are not on a bike you feel comfortable riding on dirt roads then you really are limiting what you'll see/do.

I own a V-strom DL650, 2007 model and have put 50,000+ kms on it, including an Ironbutt run (1600Km in less than 24hrs). It's never missed a beat, it's never felt lacking in power and it averages (with stock gearing) around 350-400Km per tank (before reserve) I've added 2 extra teeth on the front sprocket and get 500+ Km out of a tank - even on ride days through the spur.

Have fun deciding, but as others have said: Just about ay bike will do the job as long as it's comfy and reliable. Believe me, after a few days in a row of long kms you're gonna be glad for that extra comfort!

Always have spare water in a container that will take a hit.
Spare fuel can be handy, increase your range.
Dont roll your swag out in a primary school if you dont plan on waking up before 9am
Have I forgotten anything??

Riding at sun up/down through the outback is dangerous
Basic breakdown kit
Have a browse of some 'long distance riders' forums to see what they have to say

I have done a trip from Bris, to melbourne, GOR, adelaide, mid NSW, Sydney and back again on my GSX14. 2up with luggage and it still had heaps of grunt for overtaking, and it handled the weight well too. I would not hessitate to take mine around the country twice right now. We did some 1000+ km days and at the end just wanted to keep going.

Wouldn't be any choice for me. Would HAVE to be a Busa.
GSX14 or Bandit 12 would be OK and you'd get a later model for your money,
but ride either back to back with a Busa and you'll go for the scud missile.

Done several 600k+ run's by lunch time and a couple closer to a 1000k.
The recent 1770 run was a piss easy 621k's and thats without the tupperware.

My Dad does regular trips from Bris to townville straight through on a aircooled B12, 02 and 05 models.

would have to agree, Busa all the way. My GSR gets a bit windblown above 200km/h. and there is lots of places in WA that you could wind it up with no cops around:D
