Lucas and I swapped rides. He's got the XT600'tard now and I have the TRX.

It is getting new pipes(pictured), cbr600rr arse end (thanks Sharky), an '08 or close R1 complete front end and a colour change to either a dark metalic blue or dark metalic green.

It goes for a roadyworthy next week or later this week. So far the Red Rooster bottle is gone, the clutch has been adjusted up properly, wiring behind the lights tidied, oberon mirrors off while it gets roadworthy then they'll be back on. The Acewell is set up now and a few other bits and pieces done.

I've taken it for a few short laps of the block and it is great fun.

Kris.

Thanks fellas. I've never had a twin before and so far I'm loving it. After owning my TTR600 years ago I swore I'd never own another Yamahahahaha again....out of the last 3 bikes I've had 2 have been yamahas. It isn't the most powerful bike around, but the exhaust note is great.

Up here in sunny QLD they won't pass unfortunately, had a mate that is a bike mechanic go over it and make sure everything was in order before I take it to the shop. As soon as it is rego'd they'll be be straight back on. I have some old DT mirrors on there now- it looks fucking disgusting/hidious/shit and crap all at once with them on.

He is a bike whore. I turned up at his place on the 20/12 and he asked if I knew what was going on with the XT....There sure is some swapping going.

Stu, it'll end up looking very similar to yours, just a different colour.
Yeah Miniman1, I managed to get it off him. I really need to sell the capri so I have a decent work area(and cash to get the parts I want), as I don't think Mrs Elapid is going to be impressed having it pulled apart in the office. US Ebay has some very nice front ends on there for good money at the moment.

QLD Transport Inspection Guidelines Feb 2004

REAR VISION MIRRORS
Reasons for rejection:
• Rear vision mirrors are not fitted in accordance with prescribed standards. (See Note 2)
• Rear vision mirror(s) fitted to any motorcycle, including motor tricycle(s), do not provide a clear
view of the road to the rear of the motorcycle, including motor tricycle(s), when the rider is in a
natural riding position, and are not of the same curvature.
• Mirror(s) are not securely mounted and free from damage, blemishes or tarnishing which
would reduce the view to the rear of the vehicle.
• If convex mirrors are fitted, the mirrors do not have a radius of curvature of not less than 1.2

NOTES:
(1) If the frame or body of the motorcycle, including motor tricycle(s), provides adequate

mudguard protection.
(2) At least 1 rear vision mirror must be fitted to a motorcycle or motortrike with 1 front
wheel built before July 1975.
At least 1 rear vision mirror must be fitted to each side of a motorcycle or motortrike
with 1 front wheel built after June 1975

Thanks Russ. I found that lastnight. I'll be keeping a printout of the QLD Transport Standards with everything that is changed on the bike incase Officer Plod wants to try and be smart(had to with my 351 Cleveland XF ute years ago). What the bike shop bloke mentioned was the size being too small, but nowhere in the legislation could I find anything about a minimun size. In every other way the mirrors would pass except he said they are too small. We'll see what happens Monday. It should pass.

It's bullshit that a neutral light can fail a roadworthy, anyway I'll figure something out. I'm starting to really dislike acewells, the tacho reads 2200 at idle instead of what it is really, not sure how accurate the speedo is yet either.

What you need now is a USD front end with R1 blue spots ;)

Elapid
08-03-2010, 06:29 PM
Haha, not likely Russ. You can keep the blue spots.

Gix11
08-03-2010, 06:34 PM
Looks like a bit more trimming (the bottom back bar) then fill the gap with a cover where the hollow tube frame will reveal a hole, then two new tabs to accept the new subframe. Repaint the frame: job done.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1268083842.jpg

Fit the plastics up before you do any welding or any more cutting mate, it may influence where the subframe needs to sit.

I didn't get much done today. Where the top mount for the new sub frame is going is made of very light material, the next size up from tin foil I think. So it has just been time consuming fiddly stuff. The top rails that were cut have a notch taken out where the new subs top tap will be attached to Once that is all done I'll find out where the botton mount will be located, but looking at it I think I know and the sub is going to be pretty high at the back- looks fucking great. The seat will be 1/2 an inch higher than stock, so that will give me some much needed leg room too.

It sux using primitive tools, hack-saw, pliers , BFG , and a small file is what I've used so far. Once things are tacked up with the arc I'll get a mate to mig it all up properly. One day I'll have a decent little work shop.

Cheers,

Kris.

Mate i'm thinking if you work off the verticle bar in this pic, now clean all the material behind it and then fabricate a flat plate out of say 3-5mm plate and weld it inside to keep the look of the trellis frame for your subbie to bolt to that should be job done in my books.
And gusset the lower v for strength, and remove all unwanted pipe work.
You should be able to get it pretty much flush or cose to it.

Elapid
10-03-2010, 08:04 PM
Thanks Damo, I have some brackets getting made tomorrow, then I should have the sub frame mounted up before the weekend.

The tail is steep enough to look really good(I think) yet still comfortable. I can't wait to get it back on the road. I'm already mising riding and it has only been 3 days.

Not sure about the bars yet. The ones on there are making my left hand ache- not sure what the go is there, so I'll play with some different ones soon.

In the top pic you can see a gap between the seat and the tank, the brackets I am getting made will close that gap up a bit and still keep the seat off the tank so the paint doesn't get worn off.

Colour wise it will end up Polonesian Green. That is the colour of my old 1994 Ford LTD and the colour I painted my Capri years ago. It is a dark metallic green.

My mate fell short in the getting the mounting plates made, so I ended up getting a length or 100mm x 6mm flat bar and decided to have a go myself. They turned out pretty good....considering I cut them out free-hand with a 4'' grinder, not with a fancy water jet! I just need to get another mate around here with his mig and get him working. Tomorrow I'll get them fully finished(take a scallop out of the trailing edge) and ready to tack in place so I can trial fit the arse end.

Looking good big fella. Try adjusting the bars you have already got on there, just swivel them in the risers, don't put so much weight on your hand hold onto the tank with your thighs more. I used to put too much weight on my hands and after a 1200k trip I couldn't feel one of my thumbs for a fortnight.

The plates are welded in crooked, the mounting top holes are out of alignment and I can't cut them out without further fucking the frame. Once I find a new frame it will be all back to standard except for the front end swap.....providing I don't fuck that up too. Today has just been one of those days. When I noticed the sub frame was crooked I tried to grind a bit out of the cbr sub to get it back in alignment and because the only luck I have seems to be bad luck lately I did more damage I managed to do. I told me that Si. Because of where I cut the frame I don't even think I can re -attatch the old subframe. The easiest option is to get a new frame for it.
