Hey I've just lobbed off my subframe and was wondering what the best method is to cut of the lugs that remain on the frame. Should I grind them down gradually? Im just wondering how you do it without actually slicing into your frame at all.

Use a file mate, do it by hand and you cant accidently take too much off. It may take a while but slow and steady is much better/safer.

Too much heat will possibly weaken the frame too... File it.

ok well im about 2cms from the frame on the top two lugs and 1.5 cm on the botom 2. Shall i cut it off to maybe 5mm from there. Just filing 2cms of metal sounds like a big effort.

5mm should be ok.

Are we talking about anything really structural? Heating the steel up is an annealing process which basically softens the steel. If nothing is hanging off it or its not a major mounting point I'd said yeah go for it - you just dont want the subframe cracking when you go over a pot hole - or land it from getting airborne - happened to a mate on a quad bike - but then that was rust and getting it airborne over two motocross jumps so a bit different here... :)

How about hack saw it first then file it?

I'm cutting the subframe off completely to install a new one. Ive already cut most of it off leaving a few lugs left. Its an 88 gsxr 750 slingy. Structuraly i dont think im getting myself into too much trouble.

Dont be a wimp ... use an OXY ... nah just kidding .. file it down thats the best way .. use the grinder toget it down close first .. get your self some 1mm cutting disc they dont make fuck all heat when cutting ..

I ground mine down holding it very steady and then filed and sanded the last part smooth. Piece of piss. It polished up as good as the rest of the frame.
