quote:how do you go with rego and all that shit
As I already own an XJR that has been rego'd for the last few years I am technically just doing a frame swap....The frame has to pass an engineers report to prove it is a safe replacement but that is it...roadworthy and go.
Different story if I didn't already own the bike though...then it would be a whole new can of worms...

One of pair of fat drag bars by local engineering shop.
Once they are powder coated they will be exactly right for the new fat risers and 22mm at the ends for stock levers etc.

More playing around...
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1263771757.jpg

I wanted to get the seat much lower...so now I have 2 choices.
Replace/shorten the shocks to 300mm (currently 335) or move the mounts on the arm.
I've measured the geometry & wheelbase and it is very close to GSX1100/GSX1400 so it won't handle like an R1, but then it won't be a hippo either.
XJR1300 25' Rake 1500mm Wheelbase
GSX1400 26' Rake 1480mm Wheelbase
GSX1100 28' Rake 1549mm Wheelbase

XJR PROJECT 27' Rake 1540mm Wheelbase

Tony Nitrous
17-01-2010, 04:55 PM
Really depends on how your going to use it / ride it.

B-King is 60" 1525mm wheelbase and about 25-degree's but you wouldn't know it,
to me it feels more nimble and sporty than the 3 you've listed.
The BK should FEEL longer than a 14, but ride them back to back and its the opposite.
If I ever had a JMC arm or similar i'd go -1 to +4 as i'd like to try shorter.

Its good to know the numbers but in my mind the riders position makes just as
much input. Sitting low and back or sitting high and forward makes a HUGE difference.

sharky
17-01-2010, 04:59 PM
I'm tempted to redo the mounts on the s/arm and have them 2 position (like the Honda X4 a while back).

Tony Nitrous
17-01-2010, 05:15 PM
Im sure I dont need to tell you, but.....;)

Adjusting the angle of the shock's is going to change the ratio
its under, laying it down more will make it softer.
..and how are you off for ground clearance ?

sharky
18-01-2010, 03:44 PM
Sorted
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1263874884.jpg

Having worked out a simple solution (and checked it was viable with PommyChopper) I can now keep my new shocks.:D

crazymofo
18-01-2010, 05:57 PM
just a question, is the swingarm pivot point as far forward as it could be? it looks a little low and far back, and the swingarm angle seems far from ideal,

just would have thought the current position would promote wheel standing and vauge front end feeling under power.

its not a flame, im sure pommy chopper knows what he's doing, im just enquiring.

cheers.joe.

sharky
18-01-2010, 08:43 PM
Just been down to check...The s/arm pivot needs to come up by 25mm....easy job...that should give the arm a bit of downwards angle as per stock.

Weaselman
19-01-2010, 07:22 AM
Was about to ask. Would it hit the rear fender under compression unless you wound the preload way up?

sharky
19-01-2010, 10:06 AM
Bearing in mind the stock shot is on the side stand..
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1263881221.jpg

Swingarm pivot now in line with centre of drive sprocket.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1263879798.jpg

I have a piece of ali that is drilled at full shock length and min length -10mm to set up the rear fender.

Azrael
19-01-2010, 12:16 PM
Thats lookin mint mate, hows the ground clearance? looks a bit lower than norm or is it just the headers hanging down unsupported?

sharky
19-01-2010, 12:39 PM
Clearance is at the legal min 100mm. I can extend the shocks by 10mm too if needs be.
The headers are bolted up but the 4-2 I have for it is neater fit than the stock pipes on it at the moment.

Azrael
19-01-2010, 03:23 PM
Cool, its gonna look awesome!

sharky
19-01-2010, 03:24 PM
At the moment its the bars and the arse end that are giving me a headache.....

crazymofo
19-01-2010, 04:15 PM
FWIW what seems to be the go these days is the swingarm pivot as close to the sprocket as posible, slightly above the sprocket center line to reduce squat but pull the rear tyre into the ground under power and around a 14-16* swingarm angle.

cheers.joe.

That's strange Des....they were all on your facebook page ?

I hear what you're saying Jo...but realistically this beasty ain't ever gonna corner like an R1. I'm trying to keep the geometry as near to a stock XJR where possible.
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1263889659.jpg

Got the bars sussed..1" Hiddly diddly bars...going to sleeve them down for standard levers.

Kinda like where I had the battery for Mongrel. I attached the battery tray between the mainframe where the airbox once was... Mind you, the heat coming through there from the engine wasnt really a good thing... maybe if I had insulated it better lol..

sharky
21-02-2010, 05:48 AM
You got it Tony...the lower option...
Its a super tuff Odessey battery...and thus its a bit heavier....
I was going with the 'mass centralisation' concept... [^]
It should get good airflow where it is.

sharky
21-02-2010, 09:52 AM
Yeah I know what ya saying Dylan but I wanted to keep the under seat clear if poss. I reckon time its flat black it will dissapear down behind the motor. It is extreme temperature tolerant from -40°C
(-40°F) to 80°C (176ºF) so it should be ok where its going.
I'm beginning to like the green option....

Yeah...the orange is a bit KTM, the red might be prone to sun fade.

Tony Nitrous
21-02-2010, 10:04 AM
What's the rest going to be ?

Matt ? Gloss ? Satin ?

sharky
21-02-2010, 10:09 AM
Not sure...might mix satin and gloss black on the tank...I have a pair of cf mufflers so I am thinkin cf front 'guard and cf covered fibreglass tail unit.
Maybe a bit of the green somewhere too to break up the black...

coming along very nicely.
stand idea is tops

sharky
19-03-2010, 07:18 PM
Cheers mate...It was my idea with input from PommyChopper.
The main weight should be taken by the 8mm plate to the engine mount. The bolt to the engine is just to stop it moving. I wanted to keep it as unobtrusive as poss.

sharky
30-06-2010, 06:04 PM
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1277977398.jpg

Due to 'circumstances' not much has happened for a while...
Also I have submitted the application form for the approval so until that is back I don't want to do too much in case I have to make changes..
It has to be built 100% legal for inspection hence the number plate mount from an R1 ($0.99 of ebay)...but it doesn't look too bad so it may well stay..
The stock pillion mounts came back in the post (they had gone missing) so after trying several tubing ideas I settled on using them...I can then dump them if I want to make it solo...
The tank has been moved forwards too...closing the gap at the front.
There weren't too many options for the mufflers...any higher and the back end is waay too wide..and they need to follow the frame line.

i think you need taller rear shocks, just looks down in the bum//like if you hit a bump the rear wheel will burn the middle outa your seat, yeah by measuring the shock travel to you under tray, your gunna have smoke,

sharky
05-07-2010, 10:36 PM
'fraid ya wrong pete.
I made up steel bars that were 12mm shorter than the minimum length of the shocks when fully compressed and set it up from there.

sharky
28-07-2010, 07:21 PM
Finally been granted the initial approval for the build...so now its all systems go....
A bit of mdf engineering....the stock cover looked crap...not finished yet.....
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1280398078.jpg

Got a result at the Story Bridge show...The 2007 Moto Guzzi Belagio has 1 1/4" bars with 22mm ends..and its ADR approved...so a set of HD bars, sleeved, welded and powdercoated and bingo 'guzzi bars'..mr inspector bloke ;)
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1280361041.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1280367766.jpg

Also, as I am using the stock airbox I got playful with carbon fibre...2nd attempt it worked..It's wrapped right around so even if it does start to break away from the plastic it can't go anywhere...

Also fitted up the headlight..going to make a close fitting bracket that goes around the back of the unit and mounts to 2 p-clamps off the forks.
This way most of the mount will be hidden.

Gotta say for my 2c your rear guard doesn't really match the rest of the bike tho. I'd be tempted to ditch the indicator pod and stick with something as minimal as possible, otherwise looks sweet.

sharky
07-09-2010, 12:35 PM

That centre frame rail, back wheel and tail unit looking great together mate. What kind of seat is going to keep it working good?

sharky
07-09-2010, 03:11 PM
The idea is the pillion part looks like a continuation of the tail unit and drops down for the rider seat so it almost looks solo.
It will be single seat complianced for dirt cheap rego.
The rules say 500mm max length for single comp so it will be about 480mm which leaves room for tent etc...
