11 months ago almost tothe day our son (17) brought his new girlfriend. Shanna, home. Great kid, fitted in with the rest of the family and is a beautiful addition to our family.
Shanna came down with a cold last week so took a couple of days off school ( year 12). On friday morning her mother drove to Sydney to attend her sisters 60th birthday. By friday night we had Shanna at the local hospital emergency room as she was feeling pretty crook, they sent her home with a diagnosis of a viral infection of the trachea, by 12 o'clock saturday Sue took her back to the hospital as she was not getting any better,in fact her condition was worsening.
Shanna is now in her third hospital (Alfred), on life support, kidney dialyses and in an induced coma. We have just learned that she is undergoing surgery to place her on heart lung bypass (or something like that) which they told us on sunday might very well kill her. I don't really know why I'm posting this, I guess maybe because i'm supposed to be the big tough guy for our son, Sue, Shannas school friends and most of all her family ( you lot would love her granfather) and I can let it go here without upsetting anyone. Sorry blokes. Send good karma or prayers.

dunno if this'll make you smile but...
My mum was on the list for a heart lung a while ago(living in tamworth at the time). She was over weight (size 24ish, but that was the smallest prob), and couldn't walk too far. someone saw, basically, a fat chick use a disabled parking spot, and started abusing her. When my mum answered with "I'm waiting for a bloody heart lung transplant, is that good enough for ya?!"
You've never seen anyone scurry away so fast in your life.
I started laughing, and mum joined in... Stay strong, Gibbo.

Hey thanks for all the support, Shanna had surgery wenesday night to put her on heart lung bypass, since then we haven't been able to visit her for risk of infection, she is still in an induced coma and will be at least untill she is off this bypass machine, which could be 2-3 weeks. The doctors are saying that she is showing signs of improvement. I gotta say the people at the Alfred are fantastic, working with her 24 hours a day. I will keep you posted.

Thanks again you lot.

02-06-2006, 09:24 AM
If you run into a nurse at the Alfred called Geoff Murphy tell him Mark Chalklen from Syliva Curley House says hello. He's a top bloke, and a good listener too.

A few people have asked for an update, tanks for that. Sorry, gotta hurry as my net keeps dropping out. Shanna has had a few bad days lately but after speaking with her mother tonight it seems the doctors are starting to feel they are making some progress, although still seriously ill it looks like she is starting to make small improvements. Some permanent damage has occured in her lungs, but with luck it will not be too bad. Will keep you posted.
Again, thank you all for your concern.
Gibbo.

Gibbo I don't know you and you don't know me and I am certainly not a religious man but I lost my Sister in law to a Heart attack 2 weeks ago aged 34.
Cause was a blocked artery. Could have possibly been saved but
the old I will see a Doctor later about the pains in my arm thing
was happening if you know what I mean.
I hope things are fine as I am sure they will be. She sounds like
she is getting the best possible care.
And even tough men show there feelings Mate what you are doin is
tough in my books and you have my full respect Bloke.
So for Shanna her family you and your family my thoughts are with you all.

GOOD NEWS! Shanna is off the dialysis and the heart lung bypass machine and is now conscious (semi), she still cannot speak because she has a pipe in her trachea but things are looking good. Doctors are still not prepared to say is going to be ok but surely this is a big step. THE WORLD IS A GOOD PLACE!!!!!!!!!

Start at beginning of thread Boh

Poor lass has been hit hard.

BOHEMION
13-07-2006, 11:12 AM
Yeah I read it all again, But I was asking what it was exactly that hit her so hard. I dont mean to sound insensitive, I'm really curious to hear what sort of condition it actually was.:) yeah It sounds terrible what she has been though.:(. Hope its all up hill from here:D

gibbo
13-07-2006, 09:37 PM
Hey Boh, it all started out as (she thought) a cold, 4 days later she was diagnosed with double pnemonia, this was complicated by a staph infection (staphlococci aurius) which attacked all her vital organs. Things got seriously fucked up from there on.
On a good note Shanna has been moved out of intensive care at last, she still has a long way to go but is making great improvement.

...my english is bad...i hope you understand it...

When i read your poste about shanna the first time...
...my heart was setting out...and i became panic...

...in 1988 my first girlfriend died with 17 years on an virus infect...her lungs collaped...and some other organs too...

...this post was like an Deja-Vu for me...

In the last 5-6 weeks, my head and my finger on the mouse said "no way man - donīt open this thread - you canīt stand it"

Tonight i took all my energy...i said to myself..."common...yourīre 33 years old...are you a man or a mouse?...read it!...is the story with an happy end...or are these three sites full off condolence wishes to gibbo and the family...and shanna died like my girlfriend years ago..."

But hey!
In this moment itīs a very very nice night!!

Gibbo, tell her the best wishes from me!!
