Hey guys, sorry if my build log seems worded a bit weirdly, I'm copying it from the GStwin forum because I thought you guys would appreciate it (and I'd appreciate the feedback).

Here goes:

I've had my bike since early August and I'm only getting round to posting pics of it now.
It was a bone stock 03 gs500 with 20500km's on the clock. As soon as I got it registered and on the road, I started pulling bits off.

No pics of it before I started modding (but whatever, you guys have seen the gs500 to death).

Here's how it looked september ish

Here's how it looks now.

The good:

Electromotronic bits
- Vapor Digital Dash
- Vapor Bbllet dash protector
- Dominator dual headlights
- LED indicators front and back

Grabbin and Seein, Standin and Crashin bits
- Clubman bars
- Bar end mirrors
- GSXR billet foot pegs
- SV650 modified crash knobs

Handlierer bits
- Sonic 1kg/mm Fork Springs
- 20w fork oil
- R6 Shock (07 red)
- EBC HH pads (front)
- Bridgestone BT45s front (110) and back (140)

Fasterer Bits
- 06 GSXR 1000 exhaust
- K&N lunchbox
- Carbs running 20/60/142.5 one shim level down

Bits missing or hacked up
- No tail plastics
- No passenger foot pegs
- Chopped subframe
- chopped undertail to mount plate
- no numberplate paint (bottomed out and bent it up till it was rubbing on the tire :dunno_white:)
- cut the speedo surround to pieces to fit the idiot lights (this'll be changed soon)

Still to put on
- 06 sv650 tail, undertail and tail light
- Sv1000 passanger seat cowl
- 05 GSXR riders seat

The bad:

It spent it's life on the coast, so has some slight surface cancer on the frame and the tank. It had also been dropped twice, once by the first owner (at about 4000km) and once by the second owner (about 5000km).
Obviously having done another 15000km, the damage was only cosmetic. I've fixed some of it but will pull it down later to fix the rest. The damage was on the timing and clutch cover, as well as clutch lever and tank.
Covers can be filed, filled with bondo, sanded and painted in the future
Still have to buy a GSXR or other clutch perch to fit aftermarked levers. I wanna pick up the cheap pazzo knockoffs for the brake and clutch lever. Tank will get fixed when I paint.

The plan:
Will be chopping the subframe to fit (more on that down the track), raising the tail angle about 5 inches at the back.
relocating the battery closer to the air filter, and hiding the electrics in the tail.

After everything fits and is where I want, I'll pull the whole bike down and treat the rust (in th pics above), paint the engine and frame, triples, fork bottoms and subframe black, tank front fender and tail red
(although I keep changing my mind on that).

Any advice welcome.

Cheers,
Mitch

I've done a bit more work on the bike since I handed my thesis in yesterday (thank f%$king christ :D).

I've pulled off the tank, sanded it, bogged it, primed it (rust kill and primer surfacer) and spray puttied it.

Also tried relocating my battery between the lunchbox and the old battery box location. I think it should tidy up the tail nicely when I fit the SV plastics.

Here's the obligatory pics.

Ok, here's the progress on the SV tail conversion. Had to chop and weld the subframe. Pics speak for themselves.

I've done some new stuff on the bike that I haven't posted up yet. At the same time I did the tail mod, I got some aftermarket adjustable rearsets for a hayabusa http://motors.shop.ebay.com/dan_dans_treasure_chest/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=. Fitting was fairly easy and I only had to redrill the mounting holes to line up with the GS. There is plenty of material on the plate, and drilling it out didn't effect strength. To mount the shifter, all that was needed was to cut the stock peg about 40-55mm long, drill and tap a hole to mount the busa linkage and adjust for pedal height.

Here's some pics of them on the bike:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/matarael/SS850534.jpg?t=1258597668
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/matarael/SS850529.jpg?t=1258597757

Here's the number plate and indicator bracket we built out of aluminium flat and 'c' channel, pop rivited to the new subframe. Don't worry, the subframe is straight, it just looks crooked in the photo.

Another of the subframe

Made some mounts out of aluminium sheet for new headlight brackets. Took way too long with an angle grinder, drill and file, but I'm happy with the results.

Also put those drag bars on (CBRRRT: Wink wink, nudge nudge). Finally happy with how the front end looks, apart from the brake line and speedo cable runs.

Few more updates.

I've built an 8 cell a123 battery for it. My version weighs 820g as opposed to 4.5kg for the stock battery. Haven't taken any photos of it because it was supposed to be a test battery. I didn't think the first time I built something like that the fuckin thing would work  Will document the next one I build ( still got 12 cells spare). Anyway, it pretty much looks like this http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/buddipole/4S2PLarge.jpg

13.7v and 2.3Ah out of a 4s1p (4 series 1 parallel) with 4s2p you'll get the same voltage but 4.6ah. The starter seems to crank at the same speed, if not a little quicker off these batteries. I'll get 240A max discharge out of them when in 4s2p, and there's videos of a bloke starting is old 6cyl 4.0l falcon engine from an 8 cell :o

The batteries are surprisingly easy to make. And FUCKIGN LIGHT... couldn't believe the weight saving.

That will just give him a variety of things to smack his skull on instead of just the shed door, besides it would be interesting to see the "wanged head dance" that follows the normal impact. besides that bike needs no luxury and nows theres one less thing that can fall off while riding now.:D

Thanks for the advice on the pipe, but I really dig the low mount pipe. The headlights are just dominator 4' twins that have been unbolted and had brackets made up to mount them vertically instead of horizontally. The light is about as good as a decent 7' single on low beam, and a fair sight better on high beam.

I don't mind that hey. Looks good. I've thought about changing the pipe to an under engine one (the xs360 will probably get my pipe). Keen on trying to make my own.

slipon

yea I also considerd to make my own

(Im a smed (in old days black smed)

most of my daily work is TIG welding (a littel co2 and MIG aswell)and in general working in stanless stell and maybe a littel iron and alu now and then ... makeing machines for the medical and textile industries (Novo and Pampers :D)

so would be "easy" for me .. also since I have most tools at hand ..

but realy .. you need stecialy tools to make the realy sweet and right look (pressing tools and bending tools aso.)

and you also have to buy a few specialy parts anyway .. fittings aso.

so I considerd it .. and I desided to take some extra work insted ;)

two nights (2x5 extra hours) gave me like +180£ after tax .. enough to buy one ..

much faster and nicer then if I have tryd myself Im sure ..

tho it did still take me like 3-4 hours to fit the GP 1 ( some cutting and welding and addapting .. also made a DP killer .. as the one who was with the exust was surpose to fit in the top (so you could see it) so I made one to fit between the exaust and pipes ..

and I used a hour or so more to fit the wrap on the pipes ..

I have an 89 model gs500 and have started modding it. I came across your bike and love the look of it! i was wondering what year the sv tail is and the specs of the subframe?? Thnx in advance!

The sv tail can be any second gen tail from 06 on. The tail comes close to fitting stock subframe but it's enough to need the subframe cut and welded. Have a look back through my build for ideas on how to make the back section. I did kick the tail up about 5' at the back by chopping about 50mm out of the top subframe rail and bending the frame up.

Hopefully you get an idea how to proceed.

Thanks for the kind words. The r6 shock wouldnt have raised the arse more than an inch.
Tis a very worthwhile mod.

For that tail any 03 onwards sv650 or 1000 tail will do all the same.

Mitch once that front end is on you'll need a larger rear wheel...;)

Righto guys,

Been a while since I updated. I had a prang a few months back

Shifting down around a corner 4th - false neutral - 2nd -compression lock - panic - lock front wheel under brakes - Highside.

Stay tuned for a rebuild of epic proportions.

The wreck.

The bike is actually better off than it looks in the shots.
*The tail plastics are cracked, but repairable.
* Tank is a little dented but way boggable.
* The fork tubes are bent, but might be able to be straightened.
* The light is ok, but the brackets are boned, and the rearset and stator cover just need to be replaced.

Saying that though, I'm using this as an opportunity to rebuild the fucker. New subframe made from tube aluminum, powdercoat the frame, swap the front end and rear wheel, repaint etc.

For now, here's a teaser shot to keep you greedy fuckers happy :D

Started notching tube for the Ally subframe
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/matarael/SS850721.jpg
Not the best way to notch tube, but it worked. Cut a depth/centre line with the hacksaw.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/matarael/SS850724.jpg
Cut a "V" shape in the tube

Round file like a motherfucker.

Also, gratuitous shot of the new front end

Sorry guys, long time no update.
Got the subframe back from the welders and it looks really good. Bigups to Jeff from Profab, Toowoomba (AUS) for TIGing it together for me for $70. The guy has some serious skills.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/matarael/SS850817.jpg?t=1288847641

Also, cut the old subbie off and welded a few brackets for the new one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/matarael/SS850814.jpg?t=1288847663

Also, decided I didn't like my tail as it was. I think was too wide for the narrow tank and frame. So here's the solution.

What are you going to do for the tail light with the skinnier back? i assume the twin lights wont fit anymore. Maybe you could put like a GSXR1000 k4 light in there?

Good stuff mate.
Just one consideration: Was the original tail piece fibreglass? IF not you might find that the fibreglass and plastic won't bond well and it will crack after your first ride. It will seem great sat still while you're building, but that first ride will ruin your day especially if you have painted it all up etc. I found this out the hard way years ago.

Use the completed shape that you make as a template for a two piece fibreglass mould and then cast yourself a new one from the mould. Yes it will take longer but at least you'll have a final piece that will work for sure and also you could cast as many as you want from the mould and maybe sell a few off to mates etc?

Mitch, I've got a very similar GS and a couple years at least to play with until I lose restrictions. Main question is... I'm not 100%, but it looked like the cutting and welding you did on the subframe was just to raise the tail angle. Would that sv650 rear fit a stock gs?

Or for that matter, would any/many others?

Hey DM.

Yeah, the original cutting and welding was just to raise the tail angle and to mount the sv1000/650 tail to.
The SV650 fits the rear on the gs without too much trouble. Have a look on GStwin.com for the exact details but basically you need:
*Wheel and Tyre from SV650 (Gen2)
*Cush Drive, Brake caliper hanger and caliper from GS500
*rotor from the SV650.
*Wheel bearings for the 99-02 SV650
*Either modify (bend) the stock caliper stay bar or make your own.

*you'll also need to shim out the sprocket about 3-5mm to get tyre clearance.

The katana 600 and the SV650 99-02 will also fit.

Bit of an update.

My least favorite part of the build - wiring.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/matarael/SS850982.jpg?t=1295225222

It's together!

The half bobbered tail looks like shit, but I'm really missing riding and I can't decide what tail I want to put on the bike. Seriously, I'm bloody fussy. There's nothing on the market that suites the direction I want to go with the bike - so I'll build something.

It's the same with the front indicator brackets, the wiring at the front, some of the paint on the triples is flaking. I don't care (for now). I just want to ride it.

But.......

I rode it!

New tyres, new brakes to be bed in, new steering geometry. I was afraid it'd flick me, slip out and fail to brake at the same time.At first the brakes were a little spongy, the speedo and tacho didn't work. The brakes just needed a bit more bleeding just to get that last little bit of air. The tacho seemed to fix itself. It was reading as if it was revving really high, but not so much any more. I can get a rough estimate as to how fast I'm going of the tach now. I'll just grab a new reed switch instead of fucking with this one. Chances are the crash broke the glass tube inside.

As for impressions. Shit.

It's as agile and precise like a cockroach performing brain surgery. It slows down like someone who's had brain surgery performed by a cockroach (fucking quicky).

Still slow as fuck
