Just bought the bike from Billy Bob and had it delivered a few days ago. I had no intention of stripping it so quickly but one thing leads to another and to be honest the bike needed a rebuild quite badly, so here we go :)

Started with this http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1256285332.jpg

Had 4 hours of free time so started cleaning the bike which turned into taking bits off which has left me with this http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h308/subygt/Car%20and%20Bike/Bladestripped.jpg

I guess the build has begun :D

Yeah tail stays but I'm doing a few mods to it to freshen it up. Ideally I would love to take the indicators out and have a dual exhaust coming out in place but time and money are always restricting factors ie I don't have much of either so it may not happen :)

Trying my hand at a bit of carbon fibre at the minute so hoping to have the gixxer rear in carbon if all goes well. Failing that I'll just paint it black [:p]

Tried again tonight to get that fucking 46mm nut off the axle of the sssa to no avail.

Couple of nights ago was the first attempt with the wife giving a hand, not a chance. Tonight had a mate round for dinner and I figured the nut didn't stand a chance with the two of us......the fucking thing just laughed at us. We put penetrate on it, heated it, put extensions on the breaker bar, tapped it with a hammer, swore at it in disbelief, nothing budged the stubborn bastard.

Mate reckons he has a suitable large spanner that he has an extension for that will do the trick so we will give it another go tomorrow night hopefully. Never had a nut so tight.......

robmac
26-11-2009, 08:22 PM
Rattle gun with a 3/4" drive and a socket. The nut didn't stand a chance ; )

Now I just have to wait for that swingarm tool to progress any further with that. Pick up my forks outers tomorrow from the anodisers, getting them done in a slightly lighter gold than normal so hopefully they have turned out ok.

Almost got a complete front end ready to go on. Waiting on discs and my credit card to recover slightly then off to the powdercoaters with everything. Still toying with the idea of using colour instead of satin black. My biggest fear in doing that, is ending up with a tarts handbag that I have to strip the powder off and start again. That would suck big one's.

Got the fork outers back from the anodisers and they look pretty good (light gold). Resisting temptation in rebuilding them until I get springs and gold valves. 04 CBR1000RR forks are apparently quite rubbish without the mods so no point rebuilding them twice.

Looking for a 6.5" wide car wheel instead of the 7" one that's on at the minute as well. I reckon that extra 1/2" flattens the tyre out enough for it to mess with the handling more than it needs to (210 50 tyre), and even though the range of 17" x 6.5" wheels is limited I still can't decide which one.

And cheers for the comments Blaa : )

Well after a two week wait on the swingarm tool it finally arrived and for whatever reason the fucking thing does not fit. The ID is about 2mm too small to be of any use. I ended up getting the swingarm off without it anyway so I wasted $50 it seems. Anyone got a VFR750 swingarm axle lying around that they can measure the diameter? Mine's an 800 so maybe there's a difference?

Anyway, all the bits have been cleaned and degreased and are ready for the powdercoaters so the rebuild will begin soon :D

Went to drop all the bits off to the powdercoaters only to be told they weren't taking any more work until next year. Had great plans to have a rolling chassis ready by the new year but that's what happens to piss poor planning.

While I'm waiting I'll start to strip the engine to see what condition its in and hopefully it'll just be a good service, a camchain, a tensioner and it'll be back together.

At last got the powder coating done but there seems to be alot of powder where there shouldn't be powder [V]. Somehow they missed a bit on the frame so thats getting done again. Biggest pain was finding an M14x1.0mm pitch tap to clear out the rebound adjusters on the forks. To buy one was $100 and I couldn't justify that for 60 secs of use. Ended up using Steve Woods in Slacks Creek, great guy for all suspension needs btw, very knowledgeable and no bullshit. Anyway, its starting to come together at last :)

Frame, swingarm, lower triple clamp, fork bottoms done is satin black.
Engine cases, cam cover, wheels done in gloss pearl dark grey.
Factory pro cover, top triple clamp anodised black.
Fork sliders anodised in light gold.

Got the frame back today :D and whilst I would have loved to have spent the day rebuilding the bike, my little boy was sick so he takes priority. Managed to get an hour or so in before I woke him with the angle grinder though [:p]

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1264674811.jpg

Forks and triple clamps off an 04 CBR1000RR and whilst they are a little shorter they slot straight in. One thing that should be done before you powdercoat the bottom clamp is to trim the lock stops otherwise your turning circle is quite restricted. Of course I only found this out after the powder [:I]. Thats when the angle grinder came out [:p]

Yeah I did have a look at Caleb's work but can't justify the cost just yet, maybe in the future. For now I'm just going to go with one colour so I can then afford the exhaust and all the other bits and pieces needed so I can actually ride it again [:p]

Cheers mate. Yeah back wheel is a 7" and the tyre is a 210 50. There's absolutely no room for anything bigger with this setup [:p]

Got the dash wired in, all went in really easily until I tried to sort out the temp wires and everything shat itself!! Still don't know why it happened but its all working again now. I wish I knew wtf happened [?]

Master cylinder off an 08 CBR1000RR is on along with some new funky short levers and some Rizoma grips. Ignition moved to under the tank along with the choke.

Got in contact with an engineer today so the ball is rolling on getting it all legally on the road [8D] He charges $200 per hour and reckons on 2 hours work to complete the report for QLD transport. Bit of a pain doing it but it will save a bit of heartache in the long run because for sure I'll be getting pulled over at some stage. Just a shame I have to have that monster of a rear guard to keep them happy [V]

I still can't decide on a fucking colour!! The more I think about it the more times I change my mind. Originally I was keeping it simple and going for the one colour which was like a dark metallic, gun metal grey (the new Ford Falcon have a colour called Ego that I was going to use) but I'm thinking the bike might be too dark overall and lose the lines. There is always the black option but my last 4 bikes have all been black so I wouldn't mind a change. Open to any suggestions on the colour..............

Still trying to do the right thing with engineers but they don't make it easy. Had one lined up very confident he could do the job right up to the point where I needed some results and then he decides he can't do it. There are alot of time wasters out there aren't there?!?!?! Anyway, it's all a learning curve.

Got a few more bits in the mail. BXP reservoir from some bloke in Sydney (ta Ben), mirrors from Francois in the states (fantastic service btw) and the lights from Aztec 8. Put it all together and I'm almost done!! Took the big girl outside tonight, put a little fuel in the lines and hit the button. Big puff of black smoke and the Blade lives!! Well chuffed cause that means I've put the engine back together properly:D.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1269648432.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1269601395.jpg

My exhaust should be here next week and that leaves only the paint. I have at last decided on a colour and a theme, that took some head scratching cause I wanted something other than black and didn't want it looking like a tarts handbag. I ended up going with.......lets wait and see just in case the tart finds her bag [:p] Caleb (luckycaleb.com thanks GIX11) is painting it and the only reason for that is I just sold my work car to pay for it!!! You only live once and it appears quality isn't cheap....:D

BANDITROD
27-03-2010, 09:14 AM
that is looking horn one suggestion though imo i reckon it would look heaps better if the mirrors were upside down if that makes sense they look all alone up there and it doesnt realy balance out ....as i said thats just my opinion if you love it leave it .....ohh and good choice for painter mate his work is fucking insane

daniel
27-03-2010, 09:35 AM
thanks for the inspir dude. after checkin this build out i know i definatly have to do the engine and frame if i'm gonna have my blade lookin any good.
i see how much cooler the 800 sssa looks than the 750, oh well i've got what i've got.
i'm keen to see your puppy when it gets its color.

what would ya think about spinning your mirrors upside down. it's a funny thing to get used to at first but it would make for a cool look on a build like that... oh whoops here i am making it sound like i don't think that its an insane sf as is.
forks are a good look too, perhaps i could try that also... one day.
nice work to a sic bike

robmac
01-04-2010, 11:07 AM
Agreed on the mirrors guys so I flipped them upside down this morning to see how they looked and I reckon you are right, it does look better that way.

I've had a new GSXR exhaust in the garage for a while now, tried to virtually give it away but nobody likes them apparently so I thought I'd give it a lick of paint and temp mount it to the Blade to see what it looks like. What do you reckon?? Started off life like this...

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1270121296.jpg

Now painted....
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1270151864.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1270168364.jpg

The more I look at it the more I quite like it [:0] I've been trying to keep this bike as close to 100% legal as possible and this kind of fits into that way of thinking. Obviously it's a bit of a compromise but I don't think it looks too bad. Opinions good and bad welcome on this. Oh and btw this is the other exhaust I'm still waiting on..I haven't lost the plot completely [:p]
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1270172037.jpg

I suppose I could weld up pipework that accepts both pipes (not at the same time :D) then I could change when I felt like it.

Anyway, what do you reckon of the oem exhaust??

Just got an email from him and I don't think it's going to be easy. QLD transport want plan drawings of the Honda frame and subframe as well as the GSXR subframe before they will even look at it. If I can't get the hold of those then we'll have to draw them up which takes time and of course more money so I'm losing interest very quickly in getting QLD transport to approve it. Let you know if there's any updates though.

Is there any way to multi-quote on this forum software??

Postman knocked twice today :D

First of all what was supposed to be my Yoshi arrived. Opened the box and some muppet has sent me the wrong exhaust. Absolutely nothing like the exhaust I ordered and after 3 months of waiting I'm a little disappointed [V] Can't be bothered even taking a photo of the tin can.....

Secondly was a big box with Enkei from the US :D I was hoping quite considerably at this point that the muppet above hadn't had anything to do with this one. Opened the box and sure enough it must have been his cousin!! But this time it's actually worked in my favour [:p] The wheel was supposed to be black in the centre but turns out they sent me a metallic gun metal grey version which to most people would be a disappointment but it just happens to match the colour I was getting it powdercoated anyway so it just saved me a little cash :D

Here's what it looks like..

Yes wheel will fit the 750 arm as long as you use the correct thickness spacer. The PCD is the same on all the Honda arms (4x100).

Got a tyre on the new rim today, very happy with the result. One downside is the extra weight of this wheel. It's about 4 kg heavier than the 5 spoke wheel so with the tyre on it's virtually 20kg [:0]

hey Rob,I remember reading somewhere that that is an 04 Blade front end in that.
Was it an easy swap over,or did you have to get a new stem turned up?

Disregard my last post.
I just read "Forks and triple clamps off an 04 CBR1000RR and whilst they are a little shorter they slot straight in." on page 1,so i guess that answers my question.

Next question,i can get my hands on 07 forks and triples, will they just slot straight in??
They look the same as the 05 ones i have on my racebike, which i assume are the same as the 04s Robmac has used??

The Ohlins cartridge kit fits 04-07 so at a guess the difference would be in the distance between the fork tubes. I think the bottom of the later forks are offset so if you got the entire front end you could be good to go. Check out the Blade forums and ask for a few measurements to make sure though.

Couldn't leave it be for very long and have done a few updates.

2005 GSXR1000 forks (only cause I like the black nitrate coating :)) fit nicely into the CBR triples and using the GSXR axle I'm able to keep using the CBR front wheel with no drama's.

Brakes changed to R1 monoblocks fitted up with 5mm spacers. No brake lines as yet because I'm still waiting for the Brembo RCS master to arrive to measure the exact length of line needed.

Took the angle grinder to the front guard, filled in one the mounting holes and had a crack at painting it. It's not exactly a 100% colour match but for now it'll do fine. Had to make up a little mount bracket to align the guard properly but that was the only hassle with changing the front end.

Blacked out the bars and risers, they had ProTaper logo's everywhere, I reckon it looks heaps better for it too (thanks Lynton ;))

Next on the list is that exhaust! Going to expose the rear wheel a little more so I've got an M4 carbon jobbie off an R6 coming with the Brembo so fingers crossed it's not too loud!!

New shock arrived today after a fair bit of waiting stuck in Canadian customs to get to the US then to me. I asked for one without the external reservoir but somehow the lines of communication have got crossed and I ended up with one....not the end of the world, just got to find somewhere to put it.....

Got the shock in and that reservoir proved difficult to hide completely. Tried putting it behind the engine under the tank but got concerned about heat so settled on the subframe for now.

Also made a mini hugger to keep the majority of the crap thrown up by the tyre off the shock. I'll see how it holds up and decide on whether it's also big enough before making another to a little higher standard.

Still waiting on the master cylinder....hopefully next week.

That pipe will look heaps better and as you said it will expose your rear wheel nicely . Any chance you might change your mind on a tail tidy?
