Its been a while since ive updated anything on here and theres a good reason. Its always been a plan of mine to set up a business building custom motorcycles, more specifically streetfighters and streetfighter frames.
Well after chatting to the illustrious mr Burns one sunday over eggs over easy (if anyone knows what eggs over easy means please tell us we're dying to know).. he commissioned a frame jig for his garage for a project he has and rather nicely let us use his design and drawings to build one of our own so we might follow in the footsteps of international companies like spondon, harris, martek etc.

So we registered the business name Section 60 Customs and started making our frame jig and this is where we are at today..

This is the jig we built for steve, its purpose built for a project he has and yes that top is 25mm carbon steel plate, its bolted onto a frame to suit his bike lift and it weighs just a fraction more than a bus full of concrete.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1251207064.jpg

These are the adjusting plates designed by Steve so we can move the headstock angle up and down one degree at a time, fucking clever really..

We did a bit of this..

We really need a pipe roller and are in the process of designing and building one so until then the frames will be mocked in light tube then cut into pieces and sent with the molly frame tube to bend tech to match the bends. Then build it again.. its not the most ideal way but it'll do for the time being..

Been a bit busy getting stuff ready and buying new toys. Weve got a delivery of stuff arriving on tuesday including a new electric pipe roller, an english wheel (fucken yeehaaaaaa), a plenishing hammer, a tube notcher and a plate bender..all new..[:p]

Weve also picked up a rolling aprilia rs250 to base the frame geometry on and use the wheels and suspention on the RZ350 build thanks to mike and moz[8D]

I made a frame stand for the prilla and stripped the front and back end off it and will be tearing the rz to bits on monday so Ill start a day by day photo update and put up some pics of the new gear on tuesday. Cant fucken wait!

I might try and sneak some pics up tonight if i can get the camera off tan.. yeh..brb

Bear the English wheel came from Hare and Forbes website here---> https://www.machineryhouse.com.au

They have heaps of cool shit at good prices and deliver anywhere in aus.

Heres a few pics of the aprilia as it was jigged and canibalised..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1252752334.jpg

This stand is just to keep the frame at ride height when i put it on the fram jig and set up locator braces for the main points, swingarm pivot point, axle and their relation to the headstem.

Right, so over the past week i have stripped the RZ down and started jigging up for thr frame build.

This be the ning ning heart of the beast..
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253732023.jpg

I pretty much just got the aprilia frame onto the jig and aligned it to be level on 3 axis and set the headstock to the right angle tacking everything in place as i went..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253715953.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253744830.jpg

Then i made up jigs to take up the points i need to copy the geometry of the aprilia frame starting with the rear axle..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253744230.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253684953.jpg

Azrael
23-09-2009, 03:38 PM
Next was the swingarm pivot point which i did using the swingarm bolt to hold the geometry points in place as i jigged them up..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253718130.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253728314.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253684739.jpg

Having done that i could remove the rest of the frame leaving the geometry locators (excuse the fancy wurdz) sticking out like bad art..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253777598.jpg

No bike build would be complete without the use of an old bucket, some tiedowns and beer..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253773131.jpg

I suspended the motor from some tiedowns and a temporary skyhook while i bolted the engine frame sand from the bobber build to the bottom of the motor..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253725965.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253724683.jpg

Then i aligned the motor on all 3 axis with the headstock, swingarm point, output shaft and rear axle and tacked the dodgy frame in place.

This is probably not the best way to do any of this but its the best i could come up with working alone and im learning as i go so expect major fuckups..

Lads, brief update..

I started throwing a bit of tube around the motor last week to get a feel for the bends and angles ill use and the gusseting required to give it strenth.
I really couldnt be arsed bending pipes perfectly as this is just a dummy frame so i used prefabbed bends and rolled a bit of pipe.
This is as far as i got before the weekend and havent progressed since due to a cunt of an ear infection but im hoping to get back into it tomorrow and finish the frame and the under over bracing on the swinga..

It looks pretty agricultural so squint and try an imagine something not this crap as the final product.

This is a dummy frame, to clarify, it is just to get a feel for what the final frame will be. By this i mean i may get so far into it and hate the shape or not like the seat position or whatever so vesting long hours into perfect bends just to find they dont fit and waste a heap of pipe is not on my agenda. I will probaly make several of these for every bike i build so that i can get input from blokes like steve as to what im doing wrong before i build something for the road and send someone out on it. The reason i couldnt be arsed bending a heap of tubes was its actually easier using prefabs to get the right angles so when i build the final frame i can send the right dimensions to bendtech. Perhaps read this thread from the beginning or if your not sure what im talking about or pm me and ill explain it in detail.

From the brief moment i had with sweary bob last year and stories that steve has told me is that bob used to bend tubes around his knee, never used a "frame jig" and told anyone who didnt like it to fuck off..

This Rz project hit a wall when the owner lost interest and moved up north leaving me with a half completed bike and a couple of grand wasted. So, its been shoved in the storage shed for the meantime while i get on with building my bike, an 88 gsxr 1100 with busa front end, busa rear wheel and a custom frame and swinger based on 750 geometry..
We just bought a new place and ive finally got a shed i can work out of so all my shit came home from the workshop so i can spend my free time drinking beer and making crazy shit in the comfort of my own home. I also have a new job with a rediculous roster (two days, two night, six off) which gives me heaps of shed time..

So, finally, this is my shed, and this is my project..

Going off on a bit of a tangent here but one thing that has been holding me back from building frames has been the cost of tube bending. Whilst i do have access to a tube roller the majority of bends found on bike frames are quite tight mandrel bends. In the past i have just made jigs up, applied heat and bent everything by hand with a pretty good success rate if you dont count that time i set myself on fire.
Now that im working much like most of you, out of a small backyard shed with limited space for such luxuries as somewhere to fart i have been trying to think of ways to do shit that dont take up valuable fart space, like tube bending.
On most my days off you can cram the usefull thoughts that pass through my head into the arse crack of a dust mite and still have room for dead skin but occasionally when i can stop thinking about boobs i come up with something usefull. So here it is, the bunkiest way to bend tube under 32mm by hand..

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/photo201-52.jpg

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/photo202-51.jpg

Yes, astoundingly, something i dreamed up actually works. You can thank beer for that one.
As you can see, its a piece of pipe with the desired radius jammed between some plate off cuts. In order for this to work properly and bend your tube without crushing it you will have to follow one simple rule. The tube must be snug when you feed it into the bender on all sides, there can be no play or free movement. That way when you give it a bit of what for and bend it the sides of the tube cannot spread or flatten out.
When you are done bending the tube, due to the tight nature of the fit you will have to hit the tube out of the bender with a hammer (so leave a bit of green on the tube as it may mushroom over from hammer abuse)and a liberal dose of crc helps move things along nicely.

This is my shitty first attempt at a tube bender and whilst its probably limited to pipes sub 32mm with a 2mm wall thickness (unless you're a second row'er for the all blacks or chuck norris)i have plans to build one to handle 40mm tube to do bigger sportsbike frames utilising an old hydraulic press i had layin around.

Azrael
31-03-2011, 12:31 PM
Oh, there was a point to bending that tube up other than to serve as a guide to you chaps and while its not a streetfighter its a paying job from a real customer.
This is the first of three frames im building utilising old dirtbike motors for retro bobber looking things. This one is a DR650..

How are you going to go for reg? Being a custom frame and all....

Over here all you gotta do is an engineers report then get of of the approved goverment signatories to sign off on it and your away. Ive seen some of the custom frames theyve signed off on and the welding was pretty fucken ordinary to say the least so im pretty confident it shouldnt be an issue.
Its pretty sad what you can and cant do with a bike considering the guidelines for hotrod builders are so basic you can practically put an engine in a bedframe and theyll rego it.[V]

Brute force and ignorance mate, thats what makes it such a winner if youre doing it in a small shed on a budget with minimal tools.

Is it a major pain in the arse to buy a custom bike like this, then getting it re-rego'd on the east coast???
Did Large have a similar problem with his Spondon??

I have no idea about the licencing laws interstate mate. Im not sure what problems large encountered when trying to licence a spondon over there, i do know that frankie the original owner went to a hell of a lot of hassle and great cost to get it licenced in WA. Whether that be due to it being an imported frame or engineers report, weld testing or whatever im not sure.
What i have learnt is that the information on licencing custom motorcycles frames, ICV's (individually constructed vehicles) is vague, difficult to find and thin to non existent. I can only assume this is because the DOT dont like people riding bikes let alone constructing them and riding them.
From what ive read and downloaded it is easier to engineer something from scratch than it is to modify an existing frame, well at least that appears to be the case here in WA. Everyone i speak to has a different story.
I would be happy to post the pdf files from dot for everyone to dl but i dont know how? If anyone can help with that i have copies of all the National codes of practise and the ADR.

Sooo, I got a new welder. It's fucken awesome. Here is a picture of it so that you too can bask in its awesomeness..http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/a26_zpsd6ea63d4.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/a26_zpsd6ea63d4.jpg.html) While im on the subject of welders. Prior to me buying this awesome welder I was borrowing a mates welder to dial in how to weld aluminium with a single phase ac/dc tig which was also awesome (but not as awesome as mine) and about half the price. He bought it online, its Australian made via china Rossi welder and only cost him less than 900 delivered. I can highly recommend these units for anyone on a budget wanting a machine that can weld anything. so here's a picture..http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/a27_zpsce508a3b.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/a27_zpsce508a3b.jpg.html)The handpiece isn't great but easily replaced with a quality one. It comes with a foot pedal, stick, tig and plasma cutting torch and is capable at all. I welded 14mm ally plate with it dialled on full tit.http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/aa1-1_zps1212e36a.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/aa1-1_zps1212e36a.jpg.html)

Some of you may be wondering, what has this stupid cunt been doing for the past few years, well its pretty simple really, i've been fixing everyone else's shit and trying to set myself up to build my 1100 frame. THis bike in particular keeps coming back to me so this time im fixing the fucker once and for all. It has quite a history this bike, once belonging to the illustrious Billy Potts it was originally built with an rgv tail by a company who shall remain nameless despite their foreseeable demise. Its shit, the whole thing was shit. They charged billy a fortune to build this thing that looked so slapped together it was barely roadworthy. The paint it bubbling, the wiring is fucking atrocious, the air filter had never been cleaned/replaced so it ran like shit and the sub frame was so bad I don't even have pictures its just fucking embarrassing so I cut the cunt off.http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/P9090611.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/P9090611.jpg.html) Now thanks to the afore mentioned welders I stuck some mounting tabs on post butchering it with a grinder..http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/a299_zpsec17d572.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/a299_zpsec17d572.jpg.html) And then I stuck a modified r1 subby with a cbr600 tail on the fucker.http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/a28_zps2cc81c21.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/a28_zps2cc81c21.jpg.html)http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/a29_zps2775108d.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/a29_zps2775108d.jpg.html)

I've been meaning to stick a couple of pics up of Abel's CBR929 and a few of the othe bikes ive done the fabrication on so in no particular here's some shit i've done. From this... grafting a 1.2mm thick cast r6 subby onto a 929 thick chopped subby, this tested all my welding skills.http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/aa13_zps16d570db.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/aa13_zps16d570db.jpg.html)http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/aa12_zpsdabcaca5.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/aa12_zpsdabcaca5.jpg.html)http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/aa11_zps4c58111d.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/aa11_zps4c58111d.jpg.html) To this http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/aa15_zps6528826b.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/aa15_zps6528826b.jpg.html)http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/aa7_zps42acc6cf.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/aa7_zps42acc6cf.jpg.html)http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee414/TypsyMcStumble/aa6-1_zps1e9c693a.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/TypsyMcStumble/media/aa6-1_zps1e9c693a.jpg.html)
