I was just doing a regular service to the fighter and when I was tightening the sump bolt up I somehow sheared the bolt half way in the thread.

How the hell do i get that out?

I don't think ill be able to drill it as i won't be able to centre it due to the way it has snapped off.

Am i going to have to remove the sump and go to an engineer place and get it done there??

go and getyour self an easy out mate all hardware joints usualy have them and that should do the trick

it would be easier to lay the bike on its side aswell mate done right you wont hurt it

Since, as you described, you sheared the bolt and it is not under any torqued pressure it should still spin out. Use a pin punch or even a carb screwdriver and gentle persuasion with a hammer to rotate out the nub.. Strange though that the bolt would shear before the sump thread let go as is normally the case.

Get a good center punch and punch it as closs to center as you can then drill it. Its possible to drill it even if its snapped on an angle.

I have a feeling it has been broken for a while and all you've done is finish it off, did you cross thread the bolt? When you look at the broken face of the bolt is there a shiney section and a part of it the looks dull? If so its (somefuckinghow) been broken aready.

I don't know if It was already broken i doubt it, but having another look at it i could drill it out.

On a side not I had a revalation as to how to fix it but i want your opinion, the idea is to get a really strong long magnet and turn it out with that, due to the head not being on there isn't any tension so it should work, or is that just not going to work?

Or you could cut a slot in it with a Dremel and unscrew it with a flat blade.

Had that idea but couldn't get the dremel in enough

If its broken the bolt while doing it up the thread has jammed up so a magnet wont work.

But drilling still would??

Yup!!! Just dont drill it too big because you'll end up ripping the thread out and that would be ghey

BTW - is your engine still full of oil??

No, I had drained it out and was just putting the bolt back in to fill it up, why should I put some old oil in to catch any bits of metal or something??

It's quite possible the bolt will spin into the sump as you are trying to drill it...or you will push iron filings into the sump....

I'd take the sump off.

Get a reverse drill and drill it...

what doesnt anybody use easy outs (orsome call them screw extractors) these days they are simple and quick ....

And after all that it just unscrews with the magnet, took all of 1sec. , my theory works, +1 for the pre-sleep thought process.

I agree with what hillsy said about filings in the sump. If you're game best bet would be the ezy outs but if you drill right through you'll want to take the sump off anyway. If its off and threaded you can get a larger bolt and rethread the sump to suit it. But you wont have the magnet then so you could get a brass bolt from a hydraulic fitting supplier, drill the centre out and a epoxy a magnet in. Or once you have it out get a new OEM bolt and put a helicoil thread in (I've had som bad experiences with those but and i don't think they're cheap. OR get another sump and bolt...

glad to hear it was an easy fix

Thats not right, it was too easy....
Smash it with a hammer then jam it back in, Far out doesn't anyone else have epics?;):D

I know i was setting myself up for an all nighter; beer, bike on bench, all my tools laid out, then i tried the magnet and half a second later it was all over (giggiti, giggati)
