Back in the 70's there was very little gear to build bikes so we came up with our own. For example. a Yam IT 490 with Kawa 900 front end and twin disks, chamber, port and polishing, clip ons (to keep front end down. Now my curiousity has me on this count, what is a street fighter bike and when did this "class" of bikes begin?

It's something you learn mate, it can't be quantified. That's not being patronising either, it's just you get it or you don't. If you have to ask what one is then you just don't get it, maybe you never will, but if you hang around this site for a while you'll soon understand. Just for the morbidly curious, this is how this topic has gone in the past:

By the way, welcome aboard mate. Have any luck with the bike sales?

I normally tell people that 'fighters are the modern equivalent of the old Cafe Racers.....stripped down, swapping parts that improve handling/performance etc

the notion that a street fighter is todays equivilant of the 70's cafe racers suits me fine. On that note, since I started riding amd modifying bikes in 1975 and have continued to do so to the present day, must make me a street fighter builder. Now what about engine capacity?

The way I expain it to people out of the loop is, what the old hot rod (thinking old tudors etc etc) is to cars, streetfighters is to bikes.
