View Full Version : Cheap headlight options?

I want to fighter my storm.. the fairings have cracked through now anyway and I cbf getting them plastic welded, so they might as well come off.

It's just my commuter, and the bike is pretty thrashed, so I don't want to go the $600+ route (as much as some of those headlight units on ausfr make me jizz my pants).. I just need a cheap option that isn't a single round light.

Been scouring ebay, but haven't really found anything that grabs my attention.

Anyone got any ideas?

I'll also need a dash I guess, but I don't mind grabbing an Acewell, just gotta figure out how to hook it all up.

Seen a few fighters with these headlights

Apparently the whole set-up with brackets is (or was) under $200.

Or you could go the Acerbis dirt bike downlight thingy. They're pretty cheap (for a good reason....)

Yeah i had one of those acerbis/enduro lights off egay on one of my first bikes.. never again haha. Couldn't see SHIT with it.

The headlight off the sachs is pretty awesome.. if I could get away with that for $200 i'd be pretty happy.

Fight-fan: Dash-wise, I just want anything that gets me functional really.. as long as I can wire it up and get all the usual controls going i'm happy. I just hate how the stock one is on an arm sticking fwd from the frame.. so want something mounted to the triple.

Check supercheap and repco they have dual light setups for around $40 you will probably need to put some typ of waterproof shroud around some of them though.

Then you were definitely using the wrong globes.
I bought a couple of narrow beam (10deg) 50w globes and had to unhook one because two was just overkill.

i was using similar set up. had 1 norrow beam n 1 spread beam. around town had no worries but on back roads there was alot of glare too.

Maybe I just had a crap one.. mine had halogen downlights that basically didn't even light up the road 2m in front, let alone let you see anything.

I'll trawl ebay a bit more try find one like that..

Just go to a lighting shop and buy narrow beam (8-15deg) globes.
Supermarkets only stock either 36deg or 60deg which are way too wide to be of any use on the road.

Good tip Daniel-san, I didn't know you could get different light spreads.

Can't go past a good set of twin spots, very happy with the beam on mine.

you can also get LED lights that are designed to be a direct replacment for halogens - the halogens are being fazed out 'cos they're not energy efficient enough, apparently.

DO NOT BOTHER!

The LED's are expensive and fucking useless. If you think the standard halogens are shit, then you are in for a shock if you buy the LED version...

I've got one of these thats been in my workshop for a while, it's new & its cheap at <s>$140</s> $110 Im not saying its any good, just puttin it out there. It's got cheap globes but could probably be modded pretty easy to take H1/H7/H4 style ones. REAL fake carbon look too.;)

I actually don't mind that at all.. a lick of paint and it'd actually suit the bike.

That'd just use those normal fork brackets like the twin lights yeah?

if you go down the acerbis route, i got a dozen 75w 36degree bulbs from the states, if you, or anyone wants to upgrade their highbeam they cost me around $15 each, makes a huge difference.
