yesirree , those new teck harnesses and all the sensors can be a bit of a nightmare.
what type of linkage set up are ya gona use on the swinger?
....oh ...and is there a slipper clutch available for the tl ? had an r model 99'
a while back and found them a little disturbing while turning into a sharp curve.
the ass end has a tendancy to chop on decelleration. i would assume a good slipper would take care of it though.
your bike looks cool btw. don't see to many fightered tl's over here.

08-08-2006, 01:33 PM
Even happens on the old ones Fimp. My 85' has two earth paths for the igniter unit, one through the neutral switch, and one through the sidestand switch (so you don't ride off with sidestand down. If the sidestand switch goes the bike will fire over quite happily, and then die when you put it in gear. I just removed the switch and connected the wire straight to earth. Catches quite a few riders out though.

fimpBIKES
08-08-2006, 06:24 PM
yeah, but thats just the switch itself
i would be quite happy to just connect the wires and be done with it
(the katana lets u ride around with the sidestand down and it hasnt got me yet...)

but this is the actual little relay thingy that the sidestand switch goes into
so i dont think it is just a matter of looping it off (cos it handles the in-gear, clutch in situation too)
pain in the arse thing about it is that its the relay and the indicator flasher in one unit
and i got a trick flasher off ben, so im not going to use the stock one anyways

i called one wrecker today and they didnt have any TL's
shall make more calls tomorrow

this might clear it up

i might be able to replace it with a single-pole single throw relay and a diode if i can find out the required ratings ;)

So how long until the TL is on the road fimp? Its getting closer by the looks of it. Did you sort out the nutsert on the headlight mounting?

fimpBIKES
09-08-2006, 09:31 PM
mate, i could have it on the road in a minute flat

running, legal and rego'd might take a few more weeks though ;)

oh, not using nutserts now they just pull through the soft housing plastic
using original mounting points

IT CRANKS!!!

dad (lectrical engineer) came over and helped my "dodgy" up the side stand relay with pretty-much just a regular horn relay and 2 diodes
BAM, IT CRANKS OVER :D

the fuel pump gasket leaks like a bitch though, so i might have to order one or make one out off goop

pretty good day all up :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

They normally arent to bad at boyds. You would think they would stock most gaskets.

Slingblade
23-09-2006, 05:37 PM
Strike that. I just remembered my mate visiting from griffith on his tls last year and getting fucked around trying to source some caliper retainer clips that fell out on the way up. Nightmare. You would have thought he was asking for rocking horse shit, not a reasonably common part that is common to a number of suzook models.

fimpBIKES
23-09-2006, 06:00 PM
i suspect it might just be boyds,
im sure that they dont order stuff until your have called them the third time!!

im currently waiting on a few gaskets for the katana through them, they said 2-3days

Just some things "electrical" for you to consider

The tip over switch can be replaced with a 64K ohm resistor.

Be carefull of bypassing the clutch switch.

When the clutch switch is activated the ignition map is altered and most (I did say most not all) Suzuki's will rev limit early.

When the clutch switch is in and the starter button is pressed the ECU locks all the injectors together (not sequential , all fire when ever one is supposed to fire) as a kind of choke feature to help it start.

I'm not saying you are bypassing anything or doing any of this, it's just some things to consider if you are messing with wiring.

;)

shall see i can go for a spin round the block on sunday

wishing i wasnt at work right now!! :D

large, the tip-over sensor tells the bike if its upside down or not
cuts the -VE side of the coils and stops the fuel pump pumpin'

and for $50 i figure i shouldnt not have one
good for saving the motor if the cases get smashed open etc

oh, and it sounded pretty healthy
no wierd noises or anything, so im pretty relieved about that

dont worry davo, it'll be special

just an update
i havent been around cos my home computer died last week [xx(]
so only have access through work

i got the crack in the headstock welded up on monday night, $50
not the prettiest weld but i have been assured that it is solid (the guy who did it is a very good welder, it just doesnt have that pretty catipiller look to it)

the main rails for my new subframe are at the benders at the moment
should have them done by the weekend

so right now im making up carboard templates of the levers i am looking to use
then i plan on using the bandsaw at work to make them up on saturday

its all ally
i havent shown where all the nut-serts go to hold the bodywork on
but basically there are 4 under the seat and two up into those holes in the rear plate

im aiming to go on a big ride to long-flat at the end of nov
so hopefully i can get the sexy tail on it before then

probably not with the final tail-lights, but i can just rig up some LEDs ;)

ok then,
its not like i have entirely been neglecting the tiller

had a few tricky bits to work out

first up,
i want to have the key barrel tucked up under the gap 'tween the tank and the chassis
but the stock barrel is waaay to deep/tall to do it (cos of the steering lock thingy)

but...
i new that Capt Rego would frown upon a moved key barrel

only trouble is that the franks-racing triples dont seem to work so well with the steering lock (not sure why, cos they are off a TLR, or so i was told)
but anyways, in this pic u see the mounts that are doing the job for me now

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/73293580059116.JPG

the round one on the pics right is the stock franks-racing item (which is 20mm ally round, with the lower threaded hole offcentre by about 5mm)
and the left one is something i milled up from 12mm ally flat bar
it has a through hole up into the upper triple and a tapped hole for the key barrel
total offset on that side is about 28mm now (stock franks-racing offest was 0mm on that side)

fimpBIKES
23-01-2007, 07:53 PM
ok then,

next i just had to grind a bit off the key barrel to allow clearance for my new mount

fimpBIKES
23-01-2007, 08:03 PM
ok then, moving right along!

i had a bloke at work weld some extra material where the steering stops were on the chassis
this was for two reasons
mainly cos the original ones were all smashed to shit from the crash and missing bits
and secondly cos the franks racing stops where they were allowed the too much steering angle

that caused the moto bars to hit the tank when u turned left (ignoring everything we know about countersteering.... [:I])
that might have had something to do with all the smashed off bits on the chassis side though!

so i got him to put on fuckloads
i aim to ground these so i have less than the standard steering angle (which i think is about 60?)

i did the stupid proceedure
had to take all the airbox and that off just to get to the thing to tap it with a hammer
not that i see how that could help

and i have slowly leant the bike as far as i dare to in each direction 2 or 3 times (im talking ALLLL the way down til the wheels wanted to fall out from under it!)

and the header tank cap is definitely the highest point in the system, even before doing all that shit

i mean, if the little bit under the airbox is such an issue than WTF not put a bleed screw on it???
u have to pull everything off the bike to get to it anyways!

and thats the ONLY place that air could be hiding in the system now
but i dont even know if its there!
dammit!!!

if i loosen the hose coming from the engine on the LHS and rotate it so its pointing at the sky and then lean the bike alll the way over to the right then the air HAS to all come out, yeah?
might try it in the morning

right now all i know is the exposed bit of ally tubing i have on the RHS is getting hot to touch
and all the stuff on the LHS doesnt seem to be heating up at all!

dont want to fry my engine, so i am trying to be carefull [xx(]

Hillsy
25-01-2007, 09:19 AM
Looks like you might need to hoist up the front to get the trapped air back into the radiator. If you've got a front stand, you might be able to just use that, or put a rope around your bars between the clamps and hoist the front with the rear wheel on the floor (this would be better because you can tilt the bike to move the air to the filler cap).

fimpBIKES
25-01-2007, 10:25 AM
good point hillsy

its now on the front-stand as well
and i took off the hose coming from the engine on the LHS of the bike

and when i cranked it i expected a big fucking bukkake load outta that hose
but instead i get NOTHING!!!

wtf?
shouldnt most of the water from the system be coming out of there?

evad
25-01-2007, 11:22 AM
Wouldn't the thermostat be stopping the coolant flow? Id run it until warm and see what happens when the thermostat opens. Once the water starts flowing through thee mill most of the air should be dragged trhough with the coolant, then try the air bleeding proceedure

fimpBIKES
25-01-2007, 12:11 PM
yeah, thats a pretty fuckin good point!!

just to be sure, these fancy modern bikes turn emselves off if they get too hot yeah?

evad
25-01-2007, 03:18 PM

If you keep the rad cap off you should be able to see the coolant flowing through it once the thermostat opens (with the cap off the coolant will boil at around 100deg c)

ok then, this is how we bled the coolant
big "funnel" load of coolant on top of the filling point
all the hoses back on and just let it run until the engine got nice and hot (and the thermostat opened)

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/111720407123185.jpg

That's the principle behind such large airboxes on bikes.

Don't know if it works for air pods though, I would think that the air flow through the filter material would be a more significant factor. Exposure would be big thing too. If youre pods are tucked away in a relatively still air area then the size wouldn't matter so much.

lookin good. not much room infront of that radiator eh? :) as far as the filters go. The larger filters you put on the less air around them if you are in a small area like under the tank. The larger airbox theory is so your TBs can source air without running into restriction and also so the ram air can pressurize as large an area as possible. I dont remember the forumla but it comes about to be the displacement of how ever many cylinders are sucking air in and then some. Filters you want a large surface area but make sure that you can get air to all sides of the filter without restricting the other TB. Material is going to be more important then size like chalk said

fimpBIKES
29-01-2007, 12:13 PM
cool

yeah, so if i get a good high-kwality filter that has good material then i should be sweet ;)

there will pretty much be no ram-air

yeah, not a lot of spare room in front of rad
might be a bit more when i get my new front guard

TLR is such a tricky bike to fighter IMO
or maybe its cos i am just trying to make it sooo much smaller than stock

off now to get some gasket goo to sort out this leaky clutch cover

mmm, have been measuring up the katana's k&n pods
they will definitely fit in hieght under the tank (allowing about 5mm worth of adapter thickness)

but am getting the local speed shop to look into a pair of these for me
http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RC-1950

would prefer plastic topped but this is the biggest/flattest one i can fit
so if they can get it i'll take some

am thinking about maybe putting in a thing to space the front of the tank up by 10mm or so
i did that on the SV and it really helped ot breath well

no idea how to measure it either

right now i SHOULD be loading up the van to head down to eastern creek
but alas, out of the 100 things i spent tidying up to pass scrutineering tonight
the LAST thing i checked have left me high and dry

bloody rearsets wont let me shift up

makes me wanna :(

oh well though, at least i got a crapload done!

you wouldnt believe it...
but i spent 10 MINUTES playing with the shifter link rod just then and now the linkage works perfectly [:I]

oh well, probably shouldnt have been down at eastern creek tired anyways
good news is that i talked to em and they are giving me half price on my next trackday so it wasnt a total waste

ooooh, and i got to see some ducati 1098S's hooning around the track
nice!!!!

so i just took the MAIDEN VOYAGE
and wow!

this thing is sweet, great to be on something with a bit of torque again
initial impressions are good, the quick action throttle isnt too snappy
and the cooling seems fine
its friggin hot here as usual and it didnt even get up to 80degrees

and the limited amount of steering angle didnt worry me at all

the rear brake seems wooden as all hell, cant even lock the rear!
but i think i will change the leverage ratio on the pedal (i.e. drill another hole in it to move the bit that the master cylinder attaches to closer to the main pivot point)

and of course i had my handy phone cam with me so took a rest-stop (mexican fools run style) on the way home to take some happy snaps :D

it lives. how close does your tire come to that srad radiator under full bump? looks close, hate to see it destroyed. any plans for a light

the tyre comes close

havent given it a full-on hard brake yet
but compressing the forks in the shed has it clearing (just)

selling that fender and fitting something that will give me more clearance anyways once its passed rego

few options for the light
see page 7 for the one i will use to get through rego

Seeing as how it's a Suzi twin, I've got a few suggestions for a light mate.
1. A match
2. a cigarette lighter
3. a bonfire
etc etc etc

:D
