G`day,

Any bandit owners suffer, or have suffered gearbox related probs at all.
Got 95000km on the clock, yeh, getting on a bit, but by no means spent. Oil changed every 3000km from new, i definitely use but never abuse.(Don`t do burn outs, don`t dump clutch, don`t do wheelies-almost sounds boring doesn`t it) Always try to change as smooth as possible. 5th and 4th are whining, 5th started about 20000km ago, and 4th about 10000km ago.
I`ve just replaced the cam chain for the second time, and when picking up the bike, bloke says, "gearbox got a bit of a whine in 5th" i say yeh i know, so we started talking about bandits and the older gsxr`s with related parts and he said they had a hard facing issue. So makes me think, a big comany like suzuki should have their shit sorted out in that department. I would expect 200000km or more when it comes to hard facing issues. Has anyone else had this prob? If rebuilding is there another sorce other then OEM parts?
Keen for feed back on this issue.

Cheers John.

From memory RussM8 had a few dramas with his 1st gen Bandit gearbox.

Hey Cruise, do you know if there`s a difference between the 1st&2nd GEN box? I`ve got an 03 bike, so not that old,but starting to accumulate the kms, i was under the inpression this motor has been around since early 90`s and has never realy changed until water cooled 07. Thats a long time, which makes me think they should have their shit together. The motor itself is perfect, and as strong as the day i bought it, just a bit disheartened to have these issues.

1st and 2nd gen are exactly the same transmission-wise.
As far as I know the problems you are having are not common ones for the earlier Bandits but if you are able to swap out the parts yourself it is not an overly expensive fix.

Here are some part numbers if you are keen to give it a go:

Could look at buying a second hand box, or even new parts and getting them shot peened and cryogenically treated. Pretty common on wrx boxes so they hold up.

Not a bad idear, if i rebiuld i want it to last, i don`t want to pull it apart every 80000 to fix this prob.

Wow! what a memory! :D
Yeah, I had a whine in 2nd and 3rd (I did more traffic, maybe you do more freeway?). I stripped it and found the hard coating had come off 3rd gear... the small bits of coating then went through everything else and fucked the lot basically... and I changed oil every 3K, and stripped it within a few thousand of noticing the whine.

Not a huge job, labor wise. Engine out, upside down on bench, sides off, sump off, split cases - you can leave the whole top end alone of you want - don't even need to remove the rocker cover.

I replaced anything that was at all marked with new Suzuki parts, got ride of the whine. But something never felt as nice in 3rd as the others... I only did another 5K or sumfink before I sold it, so I don't know how it went long term. But, maybe I was just paranoid? Or maybe somehow the shafts were no longer running true???

Anyways, any questions, feel free to fire away!

I've got a 90 GSXR1100 box here. Looks pretty good. PM me and we'll talk if you are interested and it'll fit?

God.. what a pain in the arse, don`t have the space or the tools to do this, and as you say the shit coming off and going through everything else does concern, especially as it started 20000km ago.
I`m still dumb founded how suzuki or any manufacturer could have this happen, in deep thought what to do, don`t particularly want to pay to have this fixed, but in situation don`t have a choice
