View Full Version : XJR1300 Project....Frame pics 25/11/09

Mmmmm...starting a project from scratch...sounds like fun [}:)].
It will be be XJR1300 powered,in a custom frame from Shaun @ PommyChoppers. Something with 'spondon style' tubes around the motor as opposed to a full cradle type.
I will be using the R1 front end from my current bike (using old cbr400 forks and fj yokes for the frame build.) I have a complete empty engine that will be used...
Tip: Always keep your frame builder happy...light and clean engine. :D
I may use the R1 swingarm thats coming with the motor..problem is its 50-60mm longer than the stock arm....maybe see if it can be shortened.
It makes sense to use it as I have the wheel, disc etc to fit.
I also have a Zrx1200 tank coming..nice and clean inside. I looked into a few others but all the styles I liked were old and thus the tanks, whilst undented, were rusting away inside (yes I know, Tank sealers etc but this is a new bike so to speak)
Playing with photoshop I came up with this basic look....

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1245929422.jpg

Still using the top yoke from Ben @ Extreme Creations (and there will be a lower made to match it), but this time dropping the forks the full length through thus lowering the front by 50mm ish.

The idea is flat drag bars on low risers with a seat position that puts my arms straight out in front.....low ass seat
[8D]

Looking through the pile of back issues last night I found this from way back (Issue 115)
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1245985822.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1246000859.jpg

Couldn't believe it but what can I say....great minds think alike (well, he is riding a Yamaha)
So picture that with the Zrx tank, twin shocks, Gpz style headlight and an Oldskool type rear end. May even go with clip-ons if they are comfy and they fit.

This is still going to be a budget build...the Workcover payout wasn't that big....hence using some parts from my existing bike but it will be something special and unique......Just like me ;)

go for it sharky

rockhard, if you go to long you will transfer too much weight forwards and find the back end getting light all the time
have that trouble on the TLR, want a cool extended arm but would make it crappy

then again, i wouldnt bother deliberately shortening the arm
sounds like to much work for bugger-all gain

Why is it my bikes always arrive on pallets ???
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1246030450.jpg

And why do wreckers always try to stitch you up ? :(
The tank had 'a small dent from the h/bars..no crease in the metal'...Bollocks it was.
And they charged me $200 for the arm that was meant to be free 'cos of the different motor....
AND they forgot the switchgear that was included in the deal....
Anyway, one irrate phone call later and they are crediting $250 back to my credit card and sending up the switchgear.
So next thing is to hook up the motor to get it running...need to do some checking first...they have sent me 2 looms...and they are from different years 'cos the cdi's are different. Oh well...I'll have a spare loom for evil bay...(gotta make some cash somehow on the deal ay Pete ;)

Trouble is Fimp its 50-60mm longer than stock...might stuff up the handling....I'm tempted to sell it and use the stock arm...its tough and chunky.(and already has twin shock mounts on it so no expense needed)
I might be up at Hamilton Island for a 2 week stint for work so that would be the ideal time to get the arm out and off to Pommy.

Just had a look for a rim Russ, Sorry everything but.
Dont think 19" rim and 17" tyres will help.

I know what you mean about Breakers.
I now try and stay away from anything I can't see, check,
pay cash and take home. Breakers, Ebay etc.
(unless its someone I have faith in off here)
I miss out on a lot of stuff but get less stressed.

Im starting to collect a few parts and tool's together.
Anything I can help with just shout out.

Look forward to seeing this progress.

<s>Trouble is Fimp its 50-60mm longer than stock...might stuff up the handling...</s>
Must have had brain fade....
On the maximum adjustment the xjr is 570mm centre to centre.
R1 is 580mm mid point on adjuster, centre to centre so hardly much in it.
Just need to get the grinder out now and chop off the brace...its going to be welded on underneath. Did a 'prototype' with the arm Jacktar gave me....wrecked it in the process but learnt where to cut [:I]

Also scored these of evilbay for a nice price....(hence needing gsxr yoke and stem in other thread)

As I'm still waiting for the man to make a start on the frame (his sidekick was hospitalised with chest pains) I started on the tank.

Then the dash unit...Gpz 750 unit gutted, cut down by 1/2" in height and moulded to the tank. I'm going to take a mould and make it in fibreglass so its removable.

Hey Sharky, sorry i didnt reply b 4, but today i had a xjr13 on my bench for valve clearances and i had a good look at the underside of the tank, like the rest of this bike they are built pretty solid and the tank cracking ive seen generally ducati ss and monster models but ive seen it on some jap bikes as well it seems to start in front of the metal fillet under the tank it seems to be worse if the tank is full when proped up as there is a lot of weight on the pivot area.but as the xjr13 isnt normaly hinged its not a prob ,just suggest that you aviod a full tank if your proping it up.hope this long winded explanation makes sence.all the best..morry

The plan is to use the pillion seat as a mould and make a fibreglass cover for the main part leaving the front bum stop bit exposed.
The real fun and games will be making a subframe. I am thinking about plastic welding the main bits together to get a smooth unit and hopefully make it easier to fit.
My engine etc is now on the jig at Pommy's so ...at long last....

The tubes are all over size at the moment and will be trimmed to suit the frame.
The stock shock mounts are almost as wide as the seat unit so they will be a relatively easy job too.
Don't know if the black plastic bits will be used but I got them just in case...

Crazy Joe, You got first dibs mate if I decide to sell it. (and thanks for the damper)

Tony, the problem wasn't the subframes strength...it was made from heavy gauge stuff...trouble was the shock mounts were about 70mm away from the tubes...so structually there was a problem...couldn't connect the 2 points without it looking real ugly.
Not to worry though....the new version will be even better with a much lower seat than we could have got with the 125 unit..... [}:)][}:)][}:)]
