The Zed has gone - Need a cheap project!

I recently thought I could do without a bike as we are about to buy our first home. I sold the Z1000 a few months ago & I'm having withdrawals!:(
I fast grew out of the performance (mainly handling) of my old CB600 Hornet & then my Z1000 after spending quite a bit of money on mods...
Keen to stick with either a naked or fightering a late model sportsbike as that seems to tick all the performance boxes.[8D]
I'm really after some suggestions as to what's a good bang for buck bike around the $5k - $6k mark that's not listed below?
I can handle a lightly damaged bike but want a clean title on it.

Been looking at:
late 90's R1: Common gearbox issues?
C model ZX9R: Can get rattly & costly over 30K km?
Late 90's CBR900RR: Seems like an older design/ old tech'?
CBR929: Pushing the budget but is fuel injected
Bandit: The V8 Kingswood of bikes? [:0]

Really chasing any other info or ideas on what could be available that I haven't already considered.

personally i would go the 929, they are stupidly cheap for what they are. just remember there isnt as much aftermarket stuff available compared to a gix or bandit

Are the 900RR's that agricultural?
p.s. I'd ideally be looking for something with a few less km's than that 929.
