Az, just some constructive critic - I reckon the shifter would look better if the top arc/handle followed the backbone of the frame ie. turn it round the other way.
Good progress though.

Over all its not really my thing, but that said Tom, you are one clever guy with some superb fabrication skills, and for that reason I have total respect and admiration for you and your bike mate.

Oh, and when you gonna get stuck back into your gixa, now that does make me moist!

Now, come clean, you are really Joe Martin, aint ya!!!???

Looking the goods Tom !
I used to run a suicide clutch and jockey shift on my last softail.
It was cool as fuck, but after riding for about two hours, it would just shit me.
I changed it back to normal shift once but ended up going back to the jockey shift, it was just too cool not to have it.

A common mistake with these so-called suicide shifters is there is enough inertia in the apparatus that it can cause unwanted gear changes if the bike hits a pot hole or similar.

That was my only concern when doing this, strangely enough though the resistance in gear shaft is enough to hold it no matter how abrupty ive imitated road bumps. I am however redoing the pivot point bush and thinking about putting springs on either side, failing that, ho cares, its a suicide shift (or jockey shift or whatever people want to call it) for a reason..[8D]

Ok, brief update, last week whilst filling in time between fucking about and doing very little, i stuck some foam onto my seat pan with contact adhesive. It looks pretty fucken bad but it gets marginally better.. It started like this..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253118721.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253152924.jpg

Then i shaved it back to a basic shape like this..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253176515.jpg

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253134431.jpg

Then i beat it up a bit with a flap disk to get here..

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1253128319.jpg

Looks ok on the bike and is kinda the line i was looking for so all i have to do is clean it up with a sander and pick up my leather for the cover and carve my design into it then put it all together.. easy eh..

Finally got to sit down last night and fuck about with the seat leather.
My mum send me some 20yr old wood carving tools she had lying around (she's a proper artist) so i had a crack at it and so far heres where im at..

The concentration level was doing my head in a bit, its so easy to fuck it up, massive props for anyone who does this for a job, it takes massive patience and a soft touch neither of which are my strong points..

Sooo, this is how my pissed meanderings with wood tools turned out..
Its not great, and the design is a bit cheesy (blame alcohol and impatience) because i couldn't find the paterns i wanted while googling filigree. Oh well, next time.. this'll have to do for the rat ride..

Its up on the bench getting wires run thru it, then pipes and cables, then skids.
Well theres a bit more to finish than that but its getting there slowly.. I think ill make my slogan "We may be slow, but by god we're rough".
