Oil cooler mounting

Ok ladies. I am going to mount a new oil cooler to my bike and looking at a few guys here I notice they have the oil lines mounting the cooler at the bottom as opposed to the top as standard. Can anyone see any problems with air locks? .....and has anyone that's done this had any issues? I'm sure you know this one Ben as you did Chris'. Also Des, you have the same - let me know.

If you hadn't already guessed, I wrote that above at Mark's place yesterday. It's for my bike. Come on lads, where you hiding? It's a setrab unit (the same core as the aftermarket units Stu sells) and I was thinking of putting it upside down after seeing Chris's and Des's bikes. Does it work the at the same rate? Has there been any air locks at the top of the cooler since the inlet and outlet are now at the bottom and as we all know, air rises! Let me know guys as I want to get it fitted before I go to 1770.

so what happens when the bikes shut it off ... wont it all drain out and over flow the sump .. i dont think its a good idea but then again i dont know these things

Yea, it will drain back. Had a chat tonight about that and it seems a valve may be the answer although draining out is not an issue other than the oil sight glass giving a false reading.

Cheers Davo, but me and the charger are planning to make up a custom mounting system. Bought the ali today. If it goes tits up I'll get in touch.

Yeah Gix it works fine,oil will drain down eventually but it doesn't do it as soon as you shut the motor off,so you can still check the level.

I've never had any probs with my upside down cooler, mark. probs with sydney drivers, yes, but no probs with my cooler.

Bruise on my chest from the handlebars, right knee's a bit swollen, but I'm ok. It's mostly cosmetic (front guard, dent in the tank, crack in the seat, bar ends, levers, etc) and she was charged with neg. driving. I've gotta get the forks & frame checked though.

I think I would fill the cooler with oil first then drain it into a measuring jug type thing to see how much it holds. Then you will know how much extra oil to put in. :D

i'll save you the trouble, a 19 row 310mm x 50mm Setrab holds 500mls.I have run almost 500mls extra in my engine(with the original cooler) as it helps shift gears when the front end is shootin the moon,never blown any seals or had excessive loss thru the breather.[|)]
