That is huge. Now for an honest qustion...why is it so hard to corner on a wide tyre. The profile seems round enough. Might be a stupid question but hey, someone's got to ask.

That didn't answer my question Tom. But I hadn't noticed the plate though.

i think it has something to do with the front and rear tyre working together mate so if you were to run a 180 front and a 240 rear one would assume it would be a bit easier than a 120 front and 240 rear but i am not totaly confident that info is correct thats just my take on the matter
Thats a 300 rear tyre and has a better profile than other brands that i have seen, its harder to turn on a rear wide rear because of the small lean angle the tyre allows.
They do handle harder when lowered, a guy i know has a 330 and rides the twisties BUT has the his air ride raised up so it will turn better.

Not really with the smaller front you have more control over the steering with it being lighter, the fatter you go with the tyre the less tyre lean angle you get.
With a 120 front and 240 rear is a great combination you do not compromise much lean angle at all.

they tested (with the same rider) a stock GSXR1000 to a custom GSXR1000 same model but with a 4" over swingarm and 240 rear tyre, both bikes did hot laps around a race track and the 240 rear tyre bike wasnt that far off than the stock model, hence why im putting a 240 on mine.
Cheers,
Matt

In that article it doesn't give any comparative lap times? just his 'seat of the pants' view. Bit too National Enquirer to me, and just sounds like he's trying to convince himself that "no, I'm not a dickhead, and the phat rear end doesn't really affect the performance of my cutting edge sportsbike"
A common mod on a lot of bikes now is to reduce the rear tyre size, I did it on my last 'blade, went from a 190 (stock) to a 180, and for the street it definitely improved the steering, and has a bonus of reducing the unsprung weight. On the track you may lose a bit of drive when you are trying real hard, but who goes that hard on the road?
Basically the bigger the discrepancy between the front and rear tyre sizes, the more the distance in contact patches between the two will deviate from front to rear, so if you have a 190/120 combo the wheels will be 35mm out of line when leaned over, if you have a 240/120 combo the wheels will be 60mm out of line, couple this with an increase in unsprung weight and you will end up with a bike that will be noticeably worse to ride, but that's ok, 'cos it looks cool eh?
I have the 2wt full article on this test, they DID lap time the both bikes. The 240 tyre bike had a 1.5 sec slower lap time than the stock bike.

If you accept the mod for what it is (a fashion accessory)and you are prepared to ride a bike that performs worse in every situation, then fine, but trying to find things that justify it as a performance mod is just bullshit. It makes the bike worse, it's that simple. Each to his own tho', some prefer show, some prefer go[8D]
im not trying to justify this as a performance mod and never said it would perform better, simply showing you a comparison between a stock bike and a 240 kitted bike. Comparisions like this are few and far between. Myself i would sacrifice a little lean angle for a 240 rear but each to there own.
Cheers,
Matt
Cheers Matt, I think that article is interesting. I currently run a 200 instead of the standard 190 on my GSX and it's no superbike but I 'think' it handles better but that's just me.
Cheers anyway, Jeremy
