Hi guys/girls
I have just got my old gpz finished and thought I would put it up here to see what you guys think. It has taken 7 months to build; all work done by myself with a lot of help from Jaffa, my brother inlaw - u have to see his z900 turbo to really appreciate it.

Specs:
Front end: Complete kawasaki 02 636zxr
Rear end: Complete kawasaki 97 zzr1100
Twin aluminium mufflers
Speedo is a push bike computer
Engine is stock

Hi guys
Thanks for your coments
Gix11: The pipes where off jaffa zeds 900 fireblade he used to own. He made a custom twin under seat exhaust for it but he sold it without the system. We cut the ends off the mufflers and made dump pipes for them for each side under the foot pegs.Sounds great when it gets up in the revs.

Looking good Pizz. I especially like the removal of the ugly old rad/oil cooler bracket, much much nicer that way.

Nice work Pizzer, now fuck off the clip-ons (flat bars make a huge difference to the handling and control) and piss of the red trimmed seat, looks like you got it from you're boyfriend, and it was intended for Queen/queen rather than king/queen.

And even in stock trim those engines go like a dog shot up the ass.

And yes I'm out of Roies, that's why I'm riding so much atm, no 'girlfriends' anymore [:0]

Actually Pizz, how did you mount the rad/cooler? I just made up a discrete u-bracket, but you can still see some of it. (I'll take some pics in the next day or 2)

Chalky the way the rad-oil cooler mounts was easy after a few attemps.Iam a plumber by trade so i got some 10mm steel tube and used my tube benders to bend up the brackets. They mount through the original holes on the rad-oil cooler with the rubber sleaves then bolt up with a nut to still allow for some vibration.I will try to get some close up pictures of them as it is easier to explain.I have not got a camera so it could take some time.I knew you would shit can the clip-ons as soon as you saw them, straight bars soon maybe.Love your bike fuck i bet she turns some heads!.

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/207937771235308.jpg

Here's couple of pics of my bracket. Constructed from 10mm steel rod and 3.5mm metal strip, from Bunnings. And my first go with an arc welder.
It's basically a squared off U-shape with brackets that mount on the lower part of the frame rail (where the fairing bracket bolted on) and runs down to just above the cooler mounting points, across and back up. Theres a cross member supporting the radiator as well. Another strip of 1.5mm metal runs from the radiator filler mounting point (behind steering stem) and down to a mount at the top/middle of the radiator.
I got to play with my grinder heaps :), mainly tidying up the dodgy welds [:I]
I don't have anything like pipe benders, so I just went for rod, a hammer, and a vice.
Works surprisingly well.
I'll take the bike out this arvo and get some decent (distant) shots of it.
Then go find some rellacement tubes for my carby balance unit and redo the carbs, they feel like they've gone right out of whack.

PS that muck all over them is coolant, I shoulda waited a bit longer before checking the radiator level.[B)]

Chalky sorry about the size of the pictures iam not good with these computers still learning how to use them.I hope the pictures are ok to see what i have done.I saw the picture of your bike when you were coming up the street it looks tough,i would love to see the look on people's faces with that in their mirrors.

06-12-2006, 11:59 AM
Pivs look fine mate, and very tasty work there, brackets look factory. Mine was much more of 'yeah she'll be right mate' effort.

And they don't get much time to see me in their mirrors :D. But they hear me go past (I like to get nice and tight on a fly by). Just love the way the old 9's launch from any speed.

I was coming through Civic the other day, not watching the road (for obvious reasons) and had to lock her up and come in sideways for some twat who stopped for an orange light. These labourer types standing in a driveway started giving me crap, so since I was already pointed in their direction I just dropped the clutch and sent'em diving as I smoked it up and launched at'em. Thankfully it was a drive way for the local bus station with an exit out the other side.

I think I should be taking Prozac or summat sometimes.

Hi guys i have not posted for a while so i thought i would tell you what i have planned for the kwaka over winter.I have got a 2000mdl zx12r motor/pipes/loom/radiator etc with only 4100km on it.I realise this isnt a easy thing to put into a gpz frame ie carby angles but jaffa and myself will sought this out hopefully.I have everything to run the motor except the dash, does anybody know if it will run without it[?].I will post up some progress pics on the weekend. Thanks guys.

shift1313
15-04-2007, 10:13 PM
looks good pizz, definately has some good rubber under it. exhaust work is top notch as well. You staying with that stock light? im glad its not as deep as the gpz750, mine had 4 miles or wired in the back of the light. Good luck with that 12r swap and take lots of pictures!

15-04-2007, 10:14 PM
Yeah, motor'll run without the dash, it's not part of ther ECU system. Doesn't the zx12 motor mount at the crank case level? Gonna need a cage for the front engine mounts methinks.

shift1313
15-04-2007, 10:16 PM
oh and keep the clipons!! it will handle much better that way, you dont need to be sitting any higher with a 12r motor:)

and there is no cradle for the motor, its a stressed member of a 12frame, there is a serious backbone to a 12 frame though. Make sure you brace your back bone heavily!!! cant stress that enough.

http://www.wreckcarsonline.com/photos/1771_a.jpg

15-04-2007, 10:22 PM
Go for drag bars, better control than clip ons, and similar height.

Good to know about the motor Shift, there aren't too many options available for the 9.

zx12argh
15-04-2007, 10:39 PM
Mate as chalky said it'll run without the dash - my 12r runs an aftermarket one. If you are interested tho I have a 12r dash sitting here in reasonable condition that I may be willing to part with ;)

Good luck with the build - I've got a GPZ myself. Maybe after seeing yours the 900 will go in the 12r and the 1200 in the gpz...

15-04-2007, 10:51 PM
I was thinking about doing that with a GPZ1000RX that I saw for sale last week. The 900 motor for the stock RX tourer and the 1000 for the streetfightered 900R.

http://www.750turbo.com/IM000491.JPG

you could always do a turbo 900 like that, would be alot less work and more power if you do it right:)

chalk, there arent many motors out there now that arent integrated into the frame in some manner. It does make motor swaps interesting, especially since the case and cylinders are all at +90degrees unlike the older muscle bikes. I think a zx10(old) motor or gpz11 are going to be the easiest big motor swaps and by no means straight forward. as far as new motors go the zx12 isnt tilted as far forward as some but i believe its alot taller. i did find some cool pictures.

Thanks for all the advice guys.Shift I will be welding braces and gussets where i can get them for sure.About the light, i kept it as i didnt have the cash for anything else and i didnt mind the old skool look but iam keen to change in the near future wat would you suggest?.Also shift i will be keeping the clipons and those pictures are awesome, your bike looks great to love the colour.Hey chalk how is your 9 going?.Zx12argh i will have a think about the dash thanks anyway it will depend on what light i go with.

16-04-2007, 07:34 PM
Thanks for the pics Shift. Those carbs on the 12 look like they'll pose a fair few problems though. I did look at the GPz11, but fuck all motors around, and a complete bike seems a waste just for the motor. Plus, and the most important point, I'm an old fart stuck in the 80's :D

The RX motor gives me a more powerful base engine, without going over the top (the 9 is my run around town bike, so I want something vaguely tractable and easy to live with). For a full house Fighter I'm actually looking at a GSXR1127+[:p], or maybe even a blade[:0].
I'm not a great fan of turbo's, but I would love a good supercharged unit.

JaffaZd
16-04-2007, 07:34 PM
It fits Piz, come on tell the boys it is basically in position. :)

3 things that are going to be tricky is

1 Some sort of air box setup
2 A few tank modifications underneath to help with air entry into the throttle bodies
3 Piz has to grow some bigger balls to ride the thing :D

I have been trying to get him to Turbo it as well but i just can't convince him [V]

Yeah i hope so iceman i still have a few more braces to put in yet,and i have to finish the rear engine mounts.I have had to modify under the tank to fit it over the throttle bodies and to fit the fuel pump in it aswell. So next weekend will be spent welding up the tank.It all seems to fit ok i will be using the under side of the tank as the air box then putting a aluminium plate around the throttle bodies to seal them and then using some sought of heavey foam to seal it all together as the frame will run through the airbox then drop down to get some volume into the air box.Well that was one way to solve the air box situation maybe, wat do you guys think? Thanks guys.

that looks great pizz!!! im amazed. Is the motor offset to the right to line your chain up? or is the picture decieving? I cant believe how wide the clutch cover is on that thing!!

PIZZ
30-04-2007, 03:51 PM

quote:Is the motor offset to the right to line your chain up? or is the picture decieving?

Hi shift ,.. mate the motor is dead central down the cylinder center lines to the frame,..so yep the pic is deceiving [:I] ,..I took pic ,..sorry about that should of squared it down the back of the bike to give a better indication,...
Few things of interest are Piz and i took some measurements of the motor and it is dam close in width to the original gpz900r motor except for that bloody hugh clutch cover blows it out by about another 50-70mm from memory.

Other things that are interesting is the Gearbox seems to be alot shorter 50-60mm give or take approx
Overall height to cam covers is similar if you measure from the flat part of the sump to the top rocker covers, you need to discount the throttle bodies and the additional storage well the sump has.

I forget what ground clearance we ended up with Piz maybe able to chime in here later on with that figure.
All in all it is a surprisingly neat fit and Piz is doing a splendid job of getting it together and ensuring the whole thing doesn't wabble down the road ,.. hopefully :D ,..

Hillsy
01-05-2007, 03:54 PM
That's pretty amazing - good stuff indeed!.

Are you able to run any air fliters on the throttle bodies? It looks a pretty tight squeeze against the top frame rails?

PIZZ
05-05-2007, 11:36 AM
Hillsy the airbox will be a challenge but iam working on that at the moment. The ground clearence with the bike upright is about 140mm if i remember rightly.

zx12argh thanks for the help on the side stand switch.I could not fit the fuel level sensor in the tank with the fuel pump in there aswell do you think i will need it in place to start it.If so i was just going to plug it in and shorten the arm on the sensor so that it always thought it was full and cable tie it up under the tank in the frame somwhere what do you think? If it doesn't need to be plugged in to start all the better.Congrats on the new bike[8D].Thanks guys.

Zx12argh i have another question for you if thats ok i have everthing finished so i can start it.The problem i have got is it turns over fine but wont fire ,now what i need to know is can you hear your fuel pump prime when you turn your ignition on?I may have a wire crossed somwhere because mine doesnt make a noise at all.Iam missing two sensors though, that havent turned up yet they are the atmospheric pressure sensor and the water temp sensor that goes into the radiator i have just screwed plug in the radiator sensor hole to see if i can run it.Thanks for your help.

zx12argh i have a question as well (I'm helping the Pizz [8D]),.. would you happen to know how to put the computer into dealer diagnostics mode? Apparently there is some sort of procedure (eg jumper) but I can't find it for looking on the net :(. Pizz is so close,.. yet it feels so far when you get an elec problem.

zx12argh
21-06-2007, 11:36 PM
Hey Jaffa thats a new one on me... If by jumpers you may have to bridge a couple of the pins - but I've never heard of that trick before and wouldn't been keen on trying... Youch - new ECU that would be expensive...

Hey Pizz, I can hear my fuel pump run when the bike is in neutral and I turn the key. Are you sure that both the gear selector sensor is attached and the kick stand circuit bridged? Also I recall I had to bridge the clutch in sensor as my plug is rooted...

this is coming along nicely pizz. When it cranks but doesnt fire have you looked to see if its spark or fuel?

zx12argh, i dont think he has a problem with the clutch switch or gear selector cause the bike would crank if so right?

Pizz, how much of the zx12 wiring did you use? like did you bypass any of the computer for the starting circuit? if so then zx12argh might be on target with the gear selector of clutch switch not letting the bike fire. How easy is it for you to pull your fuel line off the fuel rail? you can just put the line over a containter and turn on your key to see if it primes.

good luck!!

Hi guys thanks for your help, after checking all the wiring and relays etc everthing we did was right,so at about 3pm yesterday jaffa was on the net determined to find out the problem. What he found was that we needed a 5w100ohm resister to be soldered into the grey wire coming off the ignition plug.I think it had something to do with a anti-theft system so that it could not be hot wired it stopped the fuel pump relay from coming on.In the car we go down to dick smiths the resister cost 34 cents got home put it in turned key fuel pump primed hit the starter button goughed a couple of times and away it went:D all that stress for 34 cents!Took it for a ride today and fuck me it pulls hard i meen real hard i have not ridden a big fuel injected bike before so it was a shock to the system alright.I came back and jaffa just stood there laughing. It is going to take some getting use to:D.Anyway thanks for all your help it was much appreciated especially jaffa all that work has finally paid off thanks mate.

Awesome mate - good stuff! I wanna see some photos of this baby in action!
Now what you want to do is accelerate up to 60 roll off then roll back on that throttle and hold on to the massive power wheelie - guaranteed good up to 140k an hour at least... ;)

Hi guys i have just finished tidying up my bike i have just given it a rattle can paint job to hide the burn marks on the tank from welding and some holes i got plastic welded up.Next winter if funds allow it i will be getting it done by someone that knows what they are doing.I also cut the pipe down to a shorty it looks and sounds heaps better than before. The bike is a different bike thats for sure:D i have not had a problem with it since it started i havent taken it up in the hills yet cause they are covered in snow:( but hopefully soon i will have some spare time and get to take it on a ride through some twisty stuff and no jaffa i have not found the limiter yet;)
