front brake rotors

ok so one of my discs is up shit creek. i'll be stuffed i'f i'm gonna pay 300+ for one stock disc only to have the other one fail on me soonish. i've tried findapart.com.au and the local wrecker and we don't have any or 200 bucks for a shit one are the best offers i've got. i'm gonna have to save up some cash but how much will an aftermarket set cost me[?]does anyone know of any reputable suppliers? the dude at the wreckers said he'd have a look around for some cheapish ones, so hopefully he'll come up with some answers...

p.s. it's a 1997 gsx-r 600


p.p.s there are probably alot of other things i should do before i go buying new discs....but who cares it still goes so thats all that matters;)

If they are warped, try lightly tapping the buttons that hold the disk onto the centre mount. My 1400 ones felt warped and i tryed that and it freed up the disk so it floats as it should.

nah they arent warped, the discs are fine, the buttons are way loose though. oh well i'm just gonna keep riding with it like that till i can afford new ones.[:o)]back brake still works anyway[8D]

Hiya pt. I don't think you'll get discs under 200ea. I got two reco'd front rotors for my ZXR750 for $400 a couple of years ago. That was from Metropolitan Motorcycle Wreckers in Silverwater, Sydney.

Why don't you see how much to replace the buttons (you can buy kits for em) for one of the disc guys.

Cause if they are still within specs then it would be a shame to toss em (I'm a cheap bastard and like to get every bit use out of something before I bin it).

Or ask aussie discs if they will make wavey outers to fit to the centers on your carriers.

I think they come from Pommyland (that's England to you son) so you may have to wait a few weeks for them.
I've got some ABM stuff from him recently and it's good quality so there's no reason to doubt the discs will be as well.

Just get the stuffed buttons replaced, There around $15.00 each to be done I think. Tho if you have the money to spare on them Stu's are damn nice.:D

i just emailed demon tweeks to see whether it was for the pair, or just one and i'll probably give aussie discs a buzz tomorrow about making rotors for my current carriers:)thanks for all your advice.

Have you contacted Extreme Creations (Ben from this site)?, they're in Sydney and they do wave discs and specialist work. Ben can probably sort you out, he knows what he's talking about and he really does do good work.

sorry to revive an old thread but i've been looking around and have a question. chain gang do solid discs and have a whole lot of stuff on their website claiming they are great. whats the difference between solid and drilled discs. and are there also slotted discs? aaaand are they all road legal? thanks

i think the theory with discs is that a
slot helps to keep fresh pad surface on the disc

the cross-drilling increases surface area and aids cooling

both of those also reduce rotating and sprung mass, both good things



chaingang seem to have come up with some special material with bhp last time i was checking into it

Slotting also helps clear water from the discs faster, when riding in the wet. If I remember correctly that was the major reason for the Japanese factories slotting their discs in the 80's. Japanese bikes have always run stainless steel discs, which don't provide as good a grip as plain steel (ala Ducati in the 80's), especially when wet.

Apart from dispursing water the slots or holes are to dispurse the gases that
build up under heat causing what we call brake fade.
The build up of gas causes the pad to be pushed away from the disc if that makes
sense and the steel used in japanese discs are not that good in quality in regards
to temperature.
There were tests done at some university in England to see which was the best way
to dispurse water from a disc and believe it or not using all types of discs and
various temperatures in water the best disc to clear the gas and dispurse water was
the discs used on the GSXR's with the three slots.
And yes also reduces unsprung mass at the same time lessens the
gyroscopic effect giving you a little sharper steering.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

ok reviving this old thread again. eventually bit the bullet and ordered a set of discs from graham at aussie bike discs. got some pads as well and was quite happy with the quote. this was after talking to him over a fair few phone calls about re-riveting the old discs (can't be done on suzuki discs), making up a new outer for the old carrier etc. so we agreed on COD and he said he'd send em within a week which sounded pretty quick to me. waited about two weeks and nothing came so tried to call him and just got the answering machine over and over. wrote it off and since i hadnt paid for anything and looked around for other options.

then what do i get in the mail today? a note saying theres a package waiting at the post office for ya[8D]so off i toodled and picked up my front rotors and pads at the agreed price. discs look the goods but wont get a chance to fit em for a little bit. will tell you how they go once they are fitted:).

i'm sure they probably do do that, the reason i got new ones was purely situational. apparently my suzuki discs can't be re-riveted and so a whole new outer would need to be made up and riveted onto the old carrier. graham reckoned that it was better if he just made a whole new disc. he quoted 175 for the recoed one and 250 for the new one. they arent wavy and admittedly dont look a million dollars, and i may have been had BIG TIME[V] but lessons learned i guess. it's all aussie, was cheaper than the similar alternatives and was helping out a little guy so i'm not complaining.:) i'll put up a dodgy phone pic later on for you to have a squiz at.

and mr vtr420 where the hell did you get all that stuff for a cbrrrrrr250 so cheap? all that shit is usually a MEGA ripoff[xx(]

Yeah, I'd be interested in finding out where he got a new full brake system that cheap too :)
