Did some cutting and mocked up the major bits today. Looks like I've got to lengthen it about 450mm and shorten/raise the steering column as it's designed for the driver to lay down atm.
Also got 5.5m of 4130 tubing to fill in the gaps and add strength where needed

Did a bit more planning and I might end up offsetting the moteur to the right and put my seat over to the left a la gixxerkart and others.
Should mean the kart can be 100mm shorter and will leave heaps of room for radiators and electrical stuff

You need to lose the plastic, lower the headlight and paint it matte black.
Large
02-06-2009, 10:02 PM
The fabricater next door reckons I'm just making work for myself by moving everything over, so now I'm going to leave the seat and steering offset to the right and stick the motor over to the left. That way it's a lot less cutting and welding.
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1244026766.jpg
If I do it this way, it looks like I'll have room to line the moteur up so the sprocket sits between the two bearing supports so the axle doesn't get whiplash on the 15,000 rpm launches

fuck me look at the sump on that bad boy
There's an idea, Large - if you got another sump pan made up that was less deep but more wide (like a race car sump) you could lower the engine in the frame and have lower C.O.G.
You could also make it bigger in volume while you're at it.
If you go that way, you'll probably have to shorten the oil pump pickup also.
Large
03-06-2009, 07:37 AM
The problem with that idea is I'd prolly need a swinging pickup to chase the oil as it sloshes around so more expense.
timbo
03-06-2009, 09:49 AM
What about some baffles i your big wide sump
Stocky
03-06-2009, 06:20 PM
Hmmmmm 6 inch rims. They look so cool.
A drag sump and swinging pickup would make a huge difference to the C of G

Found out that you don't need years of practice with a welder when you've got a few Wild Turkeys to steady the hands and make welding a Zen like process
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1244302924.jpg
Then we did a lot more cutting and grinding to make up a heap of engine/seat mounts and chassis stiffeners. Going back on monday to hopefully finish off the rolling chassis

I thought that too after a few beverages my welding was fucking magic with my $100 stick welder, then i picked up a freshly welded bit of steel, mates missus gave me frozen peas to cool the burn and my missus took me home, lesson = a couple of drinks = good welding.
12 beers = good welding whilst drunk, shit welding in the morning and sore hands.

The local brake bloke thinks I'm fucking crazy, but has offered to replace/renew everything he can to ensure my safety. Still trying to work out the radiator and fuel tank setups
BxP/Extreme Creations is only 50m away so help and advice is freely available from sausage fingers and the sniper(SFS?)[:p] although that may dry up when ever (if ever) they get started on their own project.

Can you run bigger tyres ? I don't know much about road kart's but I know the off road treaded tyre's come in different widths and diam but its only and inch or so, the rears are bigger than the fronts can you mount rears on the front ? I'm betting the front rims have the bearings mounted in them? Or could you fit rear rims to the front might give you a little more hight? just stabbs in the dark.

Put it in the press and give it a little push.
Can the chassis be lifted at all, you might have to cut and shut all the mounts for this tho.
I think you'll have to strip it down and add more material to the chassis Mr. Large.

The plan is to bolt it to the work bench with a 10mm spacer under the lowest bit, so it has a very slight upwards arch, then weld on stiffening.
I was thinking maybe 5mmx30mm strip/bar welded straight to the top of the chassis tubes to make an upside down "T" beam...but certain locals reckon that wouldn't work.
Next choice would be to add another frame rail that runs from beside the seat to where the stub axles mount, about 100mm above the originals and a couple of uprights. I think this might get rid of all the flex though and cause cracking.
Redmohawk
13-07-2010, 12:38 AM
I'd bet with the amount of power your stuffing into it with the frame your using cracking is prob inevatable especially witht he load your putting on it mate lol I'd be going with tube frame idea and stiffening it considerably , if you want a trick to finding cracks before they become a problem (like snap and kill you lol) Seal the main parts of the frame where cracks may be an issue and pump it full of nitrogen with some test die in there pop a small dial gauge on the frame if the pressure drops fast you know you have a crack and the die will show you where. Just pump it up once and a while before you cut sick to look for major leaks.
Large
15-07-2010, 06:55 PM
Managed to get BxP to drop the important defence shit and bend a couple of tubes, then made some uprights to match and got it all welded together. Stood/bounced of the frame rails and it's a heap stiffer but still has a bit of flex to help the steering. Test drives and vids to come [8D]
