Still got a bit to do, make spacer (the RGV headstem is 8mm longer than the GS), make adapter plate for brake caliper. Figure out how to mount headlight etc. Mount handlebars. Clean shed, lol.

That looks shit loads better mate, although I would consider mounting the bars a bit straighter as although that will go round right corners great, left could prove a problem.

Talk about a fuck around!

This front end is do'n my head in. So far I've had to change the wheel bearings, because the GS has a 15mm axle and the RGV a 17mm axle, and ofcoarse you can't get a bearing with the same OD and thickness as the GS one but with a 17mm hole. So I had to get some bushes made up, then I realize that the spacer which goes between the bearings, inside the wheel ain't gunna fit cause it's only got a 15mm ID. So I get one of them made.

As I work my way out, I come to the speedo drive, which surprise, surprise has a 15mm ID. It wasn't get'n used so it's got the arse and a new alloy spacer was made to take it's place.

I knew that there was a need for an 8mm spacer on the headstem, what I didn't know was that it had to be located under the bottom headstem bearing. Cut bearing off get spacer made, sell a kidney to pay for bearing, (pricey cunts, they are). Get yet another spacer made to go between the top headstem bearing and topyoke.

Now waiting for new risers to be made, as the RGV forks protrude through the top yoke, whereas the GS folks didn't, leaving the old risers about 15mm too short.

On the bright side, alls that leaves is an adapter plate to be made, to match the GS caliper to the RGV forkleg.

I think I'm building Australia's most labour intensive GS500!

Good decision Mate ,to use an usd fork.. if you use an gsxr 3,5x17 front wheel you dont have all the probs use a double brake in the front and an 120 front wheel ..
the gsxr wheel fits into the rgv fork

Hey iceman, I slapped a rgv wheel on a gs 500 about a million years ago, i got the bearing steps lathed down to accept the gs 500 bearings, Maybe you can do that but with your wheel?. As for the shed, it looks clean enuf to me.

I hope you contacted Deano for your bearings mate? You know he'll save you loads if you go to him and he can get just about everything.

Deano was the first port of call for bearings. No luck, unfortunatly. That's why I had to get bushes made.

It probably comes as no real suprise but I think I have an RGV front . Methinks it's up the back of the woodshed but I'll have to have a gander after work tomorrow.

The axle is a 15mm on the wheel so better luck elsewhere. I had an 85' frame with subframe damage I took to Sims about 2 months ago so it's all about timing I guess.

Just thinkin a set of USD's would look good on my blade if Wayne has a set.......

Are they a small diameter fork being of a 250?

Iceman

Not sure what the larger capacity bikes have, but these are 54mm on the fattest part.

I'm all out of USD's at the moment Boris and only have a dozen or so conventional forks. Last set I had were off a YZF Yami and those didn't even make it too the shed before they were sold. I got those with a GS850 unfinished project and the thing that stopped that one was the simple fact that his wheels were chain drive and the bike was shaft. That was something he'd completely overlooked til that point.

Front end's on. I reckon I'd finish this whole thing quicker if I stop pulling it apart, putting it back together only to pull it apart again the next day.

Fuck'n shit fuck!

Had new risers made up the other day. As you can see in the pics above they are quite high compared to the last ones. I did this on purpose so they'd clear the top of the forks. Just discovered that now the brake line isn't long enough. FUCK! Can take about 10mm of the risers and leave 2mm clearence from forks. Will have to wait til Tuesday before I can have them milled.

why don't you go a braided line? althought the handlebars do look a bit odd up so high. i've got mine about 2 or 3 mm from the top of the forks[:o)]

Iceman
18-11-2006, 09:28 PM
Handle bars will get dropped down. I'm just annoyed at myself for not measuring everything properly before I had the risers made. They do look a bit funny sitting that high, so I surpose it is a good thing that they have to come down.

You will learn SCM that Uncle Chop has a great many contacts and that he runs a private wrecking yard out of his house for certain makes & models. On my lists are three others that are after a Slabby frame at the moment but the others wanted an un-damaged one so I scrapped the last one as I had no potential buyers for it. Normally I'd sell a damaged frame like that for $20-80 as I normally get $25 as scrap value on them. I'll add you to my database however and if something comes up that is suitable for your needs i'll PM you . I usually only get a Slabby a year so i don't know when the next one will appear.
