Just out of interest, I'm currently polishing down my bike's alloy. Is the structural integrity of the bike affected if I sand down the welds flat? Obviously they won't be as strong but will it make that much difference in the end?

The problem here is you can't see inside the frame to know how thick the weld is. You might be grinding off bugger all OR you might be nearly grinding off the whole weld. Just leave em, mate.

As Hillsy said, leave them as is.

Yeah that was my thinking anyway, just hate how the polish and crap doesnt get into the little nooks of the weld and looks shite. Cheers.

I have to agree with the Leave Them Alone Crowd . Having wrecked out alot of bikes over the years the penetration on the alloy welds on many Jap models leaves much to be desired . The best example I saw was about a year ago I inspected a GSXR at the auctions that had the frame de-seamed . Every section were they had ground down the welds had split showing as little as 0.5mm depth to the welds. Somewhat of an education for me and an otherwise undamaged frame was written off. Saw similar on a ZXR a bloke tried to sell me , the same on a RGV250 and several others .
