Hi All,

I'm new to bikes, almost a complete newbie. I've spent the last 6months riding a Babyblade import, starting to look around at what to move up to. Came across this site and other streetfigher sites, and I'm F#$king hooked! There are some really talented engineers tailoring these bikes!!

So I'm hoping to learn more from these forums. Specifically, what some of the risks that need consideration before buying modded bikes. I've heard unsubstantiated claims, for instance, that these bikes are more likely to get 'death wobbles'. So any advice other memebers can offer a newbie would be greatly appreciated. Particularly on what bike to start out on, what bikes are good to build up from or gain good experience through, etc.

Appreciate it guys.

Haha - already own that toolkit - pinched it from Pop's shed back in the day, rust saw and all.

As far as bikes I like - I rode an R6 last weekend, which was a great ride (and obviously a totally different experience to the CBR250RR). But not in my price range for next bike. Wouldn't want to spend more than about $5000 intially, and I'll need something roadworthy. Thoughts?

Also, I'm in Canberra. So if anyone local has anything to look at, let me know.

I'm also back in Sydney a couple times a month.

OK, so I've been looking at the disposals site BANDITROD suggested. Here's a quick question, what would you be paying for:

this GSXR http://www.motorcycledisposals.com.au/Bikes/Bikes%20Pages/5323R%20GSXR600/5323R%20GSXR600.htm

and this ducati http://www.motorcycledisposals.com.au/Bikes/Bikes%20Pages/5408R%201098/Template%20Repairable.htm

I'm trying to get an idea of what to consider versus the price they're advertising.

Wait baby blade and R6, is that you Murray?

Welcome aboard mate. The duc will take a lot of work to look good when stripped (although Morry did a top job on a 996) and the frame dent in the GSXR will render it fucked. You'll need to get a new frame for that one. Maybe try aiming at a little older bikes and you might find some really good buys. A few come up on here as well mate. In the FOR SALE section (funnily enough).

Not Murray... sorry - but those two are pretty popular bikes, so I guess there are a lot of 'murrays' out there.

hello, advice for a nubie getting off P.s....The bigger the better. YOU CAN'T BEAT CUBIC CAPACITY. Thinking of a 600? GET A 1000 or more.
I dont think anyone out there will come up with a convincing argument against this advice.

You should be able to find an R6 for $5k. 99-00 model.

As for fighters getting the death wobble. Sure. People crash their bikes and decide to make a fighter out of it. They miss things like bent frames etc. Just throw a bunch of parts on after taking a bunch off and there ya go.

You also have other people who specifically build a fighter out of their bike. Sell fairings, stock headlights and other gear to fund their fighter.

You have people that buy repairable write off's to build fighters, they can often miss crucial points that affect handling etc.

TBH every bike has the potential to be a disaster. Thats why you thoroughly check it out before hand. If your not so mechanically inclined, get a mate or even a mechanic for a 2nd opinion.

Good luck with the upgrade man.

I'm leaning towards an R6 at the moment... There's also that 1996 Fireblade that's come up on the Sales section with the black and white cafe racer stripe down the tank and tail. Not too sure. Thoughts?

Thanks for the advice droy333 - I'll keep those things in mind. Perhaps it best I start with something established at strip it down rather than attempt to build something up with little experience.

Go for the blade mate, if that dont give you a death wobble in the seat of your pants, then nothing will. Oh and welcome to the madness matey.

Thanks all. Thinking about getting an R6, wondering what's it's worth. Check out the specs in my new topic 'Follow up on the good advice' in the welcome to the madness section. Cheers.
