My son got the most out of his ZXR250 on the weekend, on the way back from Gingers Creek, it developed a rattle, according to the experts a big end bearing. To replace it will cost around $1500 [B)]. My question is simply is it worth it. The bikes worth about $4k max, its a 250, he's off his P's in a few weeks and will have another bike anyway. So do I sell it to a wrecker, fix it myself over time and flog it off in the future or stick it under a tarp and forget about it ???

The guy at the kwaka shop said I'd be lucky to find a second hand engine, that was the first thing I asked him, these things rev to about 18k and as a habit kill themselves in a big way when they go. He reckons there isnt a common motor that would fit either. It would be nice with a mid sized V twin or a 675 triple in it. If I park it long enough something may come up, but then it would cost me a bucket of cash to do hey............fucked if I know, bloody kids.

scrap it mate...

To build anything out of it is a waste of money. Better off using a full size bike as a base

you won't find many motors around the standard wreckers but someone like RB Racing or B Components may well be able to throw one into the next container they're bring across from Japan for bugger all. I've had the same issue with trying to find a CBR400RR motor and ended up getting it imported

Hi Stu, firstly check around the gearbox bearings(behind clutch basket)you will probably find a plate surounding the bearing with countersunk phillips head screws.look under the starter motor and all round the cases for hidden screws bolts they can be hard to see.BUT,with brass in the sump, more likley copper from the big end/main bearing shells the crank will be damaged.you need to find why it shat itself.low/poor quality oil clogged oil pick up whatever.otherwise if you put it together it will do it all again.best advise is sell it as is cut your losses..sincerely morry

Anyone know where I can get a set of big end bearings for this peice of shit I'm getting dicked around out here in the sticks. The local guy didnt even attempt it he just said "cant help you its a grey import". The guys at Tamworth are not returning my calls, maybe there is a shop in the city I'm better of dealing with. Any help would be appreciated.

Possible Southern Cross Sports in Melbourne, I get a lot of gear for the 400 from them. He's got the following XZR250 parts listed on the ebay shop but may well have other engine parts

RB Imports have been very helpful, thanks for the tip Dan, mind you the bloody bearings are dear enough at $18 a throw.
