1981 GS 1000g
Having trouble starting
seems to labor on starting like its too advanced
also pings under load which suggests too advanced.
Does anyone know if I can adjust the timing??

Went through the wiring and cleaned all the connections with brake cleaner and then a liberal coat of carode cure. It made a big difference and seems top get the power to the starter better.

it took u 12 months to do that fucken hell u could of shipped the bike here and I could've rewired it for u in that time:)

yep you can adjust timing, remove the 3 screws holding the engine cover on the right hand side of the motor, move the backing plate with the pickups on it, use a timing light to adjust the position. timing marks are in a "window" at the top of the timing plate, you will see them.
Does the bike idle?
And now what are you doing about the valves in that motor?

Also check the spring loaded advance unit in the middle of the pick-ups is free to move, ie not gummed up.
From memory should go to full advance at about 1800 rpm.
