Hello,
I posted some pics of my in progress gpz 900/1000rx a
while ago. Have been offline for months since, so heres an
update on the bike now.
First pic is the geep as it was when it got rego. Was
generally nicely restored with powder and VHT, stockish
chassis with 1000rx motor.
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/48976925203808.jpg
Then after rego when the mod bug bit, it changed with a early gsxr 750 slingy front end fitted (taken off my 88 7-11), using some kawa yokes as an adapter (yokes had geep like stem with gixxer like fork holes and spacing).
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/48976925195662.jpg
Much more fun now and alot lighter and playful. Tips into corners alot quicker, but low enough to scrape exhaust when missus is on the back if not careful. Brakes are alot better. I only really notice the 1000 factor at WFO throttle or the top of the torque curve.
The shorter forks make the radiator cooling less efficient, but i've got some plans to fix that. Using a manual fan switch for now. Also running the clipons from the gix as thats all i had around for bars. Planning to eventually add superbike bars and gixxer rear wheel but for now motor and suspension tuning is the priority.
Still along way to go, will post up some more pics as it progresses.

How's it going unsane?
Gotta get some outside photos of mine yet, but here's a couple of it at the moment.

Where'd you get the radiator hose from? and what rear shock are you running?
Z-Power in Sdyney are doing K&N replica air pods for $130 delivered if you're thinking of ditching the airbox.

what sizes they got chalky?
All sorts, mine are 54mm. Ring'em and they 'll confirm what they have. 2 days after I ordered them they turned up in the mailbox.

Howdy Benny, Geep is looking good mate, nice detail work.
It defn'tly needs bars & the rear wheel to match the frontend conversion (the Gixer front end has done wonders for the look BTW)
Keep up the good work, we'll hafta go for a spin now the weather's looking up.
Coming to the GP?

Hey guys,
Got the radiator hose from cyco performance a year or two ago, its marked with the Goodyear logo, same as car tyre goodyear. Running it direct from rad to pump.
Also just using standard air shock for now, gonna be using a zz11 one soon though. The 11 shock should jack the rear up nicely and then let me use the 17" rear without losing to much ground clearance.
And thanks for tip about pods chalk, but i just ordered some dual ones on friday. Cant wait to ditch the airbox. And im liking your helmet fairing too, something original. Looking forward to more pics.
Not going to GP this year turbokat, to many other things to drain my wallet at the moment. Will be kicking back with some vodka watching it at home.
And i know what you mean about the fairing fimp. I like the pointy shape of geep fairings but there is way to much space between fender and fairing.
Does the ZZR shock bolt straight in? How much rise does it give?
I was reading some old posts on the GPz site the other day, and something I learnt was how to refresh the oil in our old shocks. Just over pump them with air, turn up side down for a couple of minutes then let air out, the oil will be forced out through the air valve, then replace with 150ml of new oil. Improves damping considerably. Also the air seals will actually handle twice the recomended pressure. I'm running 50% over now, and the rear actually sticks o the road rather than skipping all over it, or leaving it completely under hard breaking.

It should only give around 2 cm lift, with the chain adjusters at the bottom im hoping its enough.
Have read conflicting things about fitting, some saying it slides in others needing to file 1-2mm off the top of the shock. apparently the zzr11 C is the easiest to fit, but D models are longer.
Heres a few shock links i found having a quick look in the gpz900r archive:
Bandit 12 shock (sounds like a big lift) http://www.gpz900r.org/gpz900r/archive/index.php?t-1331.html
Tail riser (a bit useless without pics but interesting idea)
http://www.gpz900r.org/gpz900r/archive/index.php?t-220.html
German zzr11 shock fitting guide, needs translating with http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ or something.
http://www.900r.de/umbautipps/umbautipps-zzrfederbein.html
And that oil refresh sounds interesting, ill pump mine up tommorow to over max and see how it goes.
A couple of centimetres more should do me for now, plus the improved performance. I actually bought one from the local wreckers yesterday and they're pulling it out of the wreck (ouch, bet the rider hurt) today, not sure which model though.
You coming on the Straight liners run mate? 2 GPz's to teach the others how to go play in the twisties would be cool. :D

Nah cant go, no money for big adventures at the moment. Just read the straightliners thread last night, kickin myself for not seeing it earlier. Sounds like it will be one hell of an event.
Let me know how you go with the shock, and are you running your geep at straigtliners? it should go well i reckon with the pods on.
Yeah, I'll be running the Geep, dunno how I'll go considering some of the hotrods that'll be there. I mounted up the shock last night (had to file 2 mm off the top bush, and you need to use the ZZR lower mounting bolt, which is about 10 mm longer), and both shocks are the same length. I have wound the spring preload right down, so the ride height should be higher.
Just took the bike for an hour or so's ride with the zzr11 shock. Much improved, the rear end doesn't skip around under brakes anymore. I can lock it up at speed (Got new sintered brake pads too :) and bring it in straight.
The shock hasn't raised the rear by much at all, although the ride height is higher, but certainly plants the rear wheel a whole lot better.
AND when I get the oil leak fixed I won't have the 'oil on the rear tyre' problem either. Should help improve things on the roundy roundy bits eh. (Went through one large round about sideways without even trying :)

Big Bump.
Hello guys, been awhile, I've started doing some work on this old beast again. Nothing major but doing a jerry built tail mod and considering a cut down orginal fairing as it looks kinda good.
Will post pics later or tommorow. Riding a 99 Zx9 at the moment, plastic fantastic though. Still fun.

Hey Si ! Thanks mate, good to be back. Had a forced, extended stint off the road due to financial reasons, and when I got back in the saddle I had sort of forgot just how good fighters are. Weird, I knew they used to be the best part about bikes to me, but the old feeling of being obsessed with fighters just wasnt there. After riding for a bit (and hooning like mad out in the twisties) the fighter mentality (whatever that is exactly) started coming back, and one day, out came the hacksaw and grinder heh. The fairings on my 9r are nervous, but I'm liking them at speed too much for now.
Ok now some pics. Not the most interesting or fastest fighter around but I love this old thing, is fun to ride, fairly agressive.
Getting it cleaned up and spare rx motor put in.

A pic i shopped years ago, just what I'd like to get this bike to one day. Have a spare frame with all the tabs and useless mounting points grinded off, will eventually swap everything over to that frame.

Mate love the frame, tank, sharp kwak tail and twin spots.. looks great, and hate to say it but don't mind the little fairing, that close hugging the tank looks cool, not sure if your steering would interfere though?? looks the goods anyway.

i think you should retain that front fairing somehow its one of the many things that made geepz so attractive

01-02-2010, 04:04 PM
I have to agree on that as well. The GPZ front was tough looking, way more than the twin light set up mate. Can you tuck it in that close with the light in it though?
Weaselman

perhaps you can cut out the bottom of the fairing under the light and modify the bracket that holds the lot on as that look with the fairing is tough as fuck

Hey guys (sup Clint!),
Yeah the fairing is a tight fit, but very doable. I also hate to say it, but I like the little fairing too, and the further this bike goes past 120, the less fun it is (due to wind and some questionable handling when it hits bumps). A wind break of some sort would add alot to function with some eye pleasing form.
Only need to remove a small amount of hidden plastic with a dremel for fork yokes to have free movement. The current bars, not so easy. Im using Renthal superbike "ultra low" bars, but if I switch to flat bar will get alot more movement. At the worst, would have to cut some scoops out of the side of the screen to allow for full lock turns. Maybe have to get some of those small alloy fluid reservoirs.
Standard fairing bracket cut down and re-welded will make for an easy fit, and dual spots can be built into that bracket as the width is right (they are not dominator lights, think probably a chinese brand, but got them from a mate and like them).
The other option is cut along the line that goes through that indicator mounting triangle to achieve maximum pointy-ness, then fitting whole thing to the yokes so it moves. I basically just want the screen as low as possible, and pointy nose point as low as possible.
"perhaps you can cut out the bottom of the fairing under the light"
Yep, only option really, to cut the bit directly under light hole. Or a combo of that and cutting the front fender. With the current forks, there is very little room at full compression, tyre very close to radiator and fender close to bottom yoke. Would aim to build twin lights into the hole, and add some sort of arch/panel that makes it all neat. With an arch and two "speed holes" in fender could probably get it properly low.
Will do some more tinkering this week, will post pics if anything significant. For now I have hours and hours and catching up reading the forum and checking out all the current projects, from what Ive seen so far, Very Nice Stuff.
"is tough as fuck"
Sweet.
Btw, is Turbokat still around ? I shaved my head a month or so ago, and ended up looking like his mini me haha.[8D][8D]

Benno !! You're back [:0]
How's life with you & the loveley Amy mate? Hope you're both well, we must ketchup soon.
I'm a +1 for the tucked in GeePeeZee fairing too [:p] the shape is nice & aggressive & suits the ZX tail well, the pointy front/pointy rear/bellypan combo works a treat on that bike so I'd be going to a lower bar to fit the fairing easier if I owned it.

Haha, mate. Yeah everything is good, amy is as good as ever. Totally up for some ketchup soon. Heard through the grapevine about Craig btw, man not enough swear words to say what I think about that.
