I am pretty sure my starter relay/solenoid is borked, measured 12v at the trigering terminals when i hit the button, was getting intermittent starts then nothing no clicking or carying on zip.

So doing some ringing around kawasaki said sorry no aftermarket available but we can get you a genuine one it will be $112 and 3weeks from japan. "no worrys thanks mate, click"

another mob said $60 for an aftermarket.

now this is getting to be a bit much, if it were $30-40 i wouldnt mind but you bunch of theiving cunts.

so i was thinking this should work, 150 amp relay from jaycar $15.
Thoughts?

Have you tried the wreckers? Solenoids are pretty generic (I've had an Across solenoid on my old XJ900).

the one in newcastle is another bloke that thinks his parts are made of gold and would probably want the same amount for an old one as a brand new one. and i was hoping to have it by the weekend.

I gave the auto sparkys a call and he thinks he has a few out the back so i will drop in there tomorrow or friday.

Mate, there's no reason the Jaycar one wouldn't work, it sounds strong enough at 150 amps, you just have to deal with the terminals/wiring being a bit different.

well i picked up the jaycar relay today, the bloke at jaycar was a bit hesitant about the female spade terminals not being able to hole enough current, i say pah, what does the fat sweaty nerd know about bikes anyway.

cost me just under $21 for the relay, a pack of 4 big female spade terminals and a pack of smaller ones for the trigger wires.

I wired it all up and put heat shrink over the metal surfaces of the terminals due to them being fairly close together, hit the button and its as good as gold. it didn't crank for long but there was no heat in the terminals.

If anyone wants some photos let me know.

$21 is a bit cheaper than the $112 that kawasaki wanted for a genuine item.

i have a regular jaycar relay on my starter and it seems to have been going strong for 3 years or so

dont see why it would be a problemo ;)

I've measured around 80Amps on start up on my Kat (I have a nice 600Amp DC Fluke tong ammeter) , that relay should be fine, I've also been looking at the solid state relay too, rated at 100Amps with a 240Amp peak, but stock solenoid still ok....
