View Full Version : Custom headlight shroud designs

Ok, got a quick question a little bit out of left field.

I was looking at custom streetfighter headlights and I'm coming to the conclusion that none of them really jump out at me, and they're all fairly commonly used. Given that it will cost something in the order of 6-700$ for a custom headlight unit, I was thinking maybe that's money better spent on getting something truely custom made up.

I've still got the original ZX10R headlight unit. The left perspex cover is broken, but the lights themselves seem ok, and look kind of cool. While its a sealed unit I can always dremel the covers off easily enough and it would be possible to build up a shroud around it to a custom design.

Has anyone worked with someone that does this sort of custom work? Either someone in the bike industry or (more likely) someone that does arty type work that could sculpt up a design and then make up a cast to make a fibreglass / carbon shroud? Making up brackets would be easy enough, just need to cast tabs in the mould.

I'm thinking that something along the lines of a predator design could make for a nice effect.....

you want something original, but shaped like that eh..

THINK AGAIN, there are a few german bikes getting around with em
cant find a picture anywhere, but im sure someone can point you in the direction of one

either way, using the stock lights your going to end up with something fairly large
unless you hack out the prokector beams and just use them?

This photo doesnt really do it justice but its a stock 05 GSXR 1000 head light that has been modified and plastic welded together from fairing pieces etc , the guy that did it here in Melbourne does pretty awsome stuff having said that at first I wasn't prepared to spend big dollars either on a factory light ( FZ-1 naked) but the money on a custom head light ads up bloody fast.[^]

I've seen some guys use pieces off paintball masks to make a fiberglass mold, then use the projector lights like off your 10R light there to light it up.

I talked to a bloke in the blue mountains that does prop reproductions who reckoned he could knock up a mould and a finished article for about a grand... bit pricey but guess this sort of custom work is likely to be. Food for thought anyway - got enough to do right at the minute just to get ready for the viv and get frame checked etc. Bike goes in to Bike Craft tomorrow :D

$1000? Holy shit, that is ridiculous!

I had no idea about fibreglassing and made my own tail piece for about $60.

Well, depends on what you want. What I was asking him about was making up a custom design based on a predator mask or an early (giger) alien skull. This requires a bit of design and no doubt trial and error sculpting before being able to then produce a mould and a finished article. All depends on what you want :).

Yeah, I saw the 'predator' one on your site, but its a bit ... well, boring to be honest :). I was looking for something sculpted a lot more authentically.

Maybe 'cos it's plain white..? Most of your 'shape' comes from the paint design anyway. See what Brad reckons he can do with it.

It's here on the shelf if you want one anyway - as well as this new one (which is a lot smaller, very cool) -

Cbrrt did a how to make a headlight unit in his build thread - first page has an index to each build part - worth having a look

It's worth paying the $ for one of those units because the work you end up doing, is hard but satisfying. I used an old powerbronze headlight, did loads of sculpting and fibreglassing, used projectors and after a hundred hours sanding it (at each stage), I got one that I wanted. Granted it's not to everyones taste but I just couldn't find one I wanted and I didn't have £400 for one. Like you, I have an idea to use old lights and build a shroud around it... and I've not seen those lights on any other fighters, so not saying which lights they are. But I will be doing all the work myself, now I know how to do it. Personally, if they guys are offering you those units for less than market price - get one. They are mint and look really well made.
